Technology?

(ReDox) #1

Is it known what game technology this game is being built on or can it be revealed? Is it Unreal Engine 3? CryEnine 3? id tech 5? Inhouse?

Looking forward to the game! I’m interesting in seeing what you guys can do with an all new universe.

(SockDog) #2

It could go many different ways as there are clear pros and cons for all the engines. Just out of sheer curiosity I’d like to see what SD could do with the Crytek engine.

If I had to bet I’d say an even more modified id Tech 4 engine.

(Nail) #3

I’d be willing to bet against id Tech on this one, I think Endrant got that puppy

there’s a chance it’ll be Gamebryo

(SockDog) #4

Crytek would be interesting, how did that engine hold up for online play?

(Floris) #5

Well SD is still hiring people with “Knowledge of id technologies” as a preference, unless they are really evil and try to mislead us toward thinking they are still using id tech while they are not, I would go for either idTech4 starting from the ET:QW codebase or idTech5. SD has been a partner with id for a long time and as far as I remember at last Quakecon John Carmack said they already send preview versions of the engine to some of their partners.

(ReDox) #6

Good find. It would be awesome if they were using id tech 5.

I think Gamebryo would be a horrible choice.

EDIT: The product page on the site says they’re using propietary Virtual Texturing which is what id tech 5 does too.

(SockDog) #7

Doesn’t ‘proprietary’ seem to imply it’s something Splash Damage have developed specifically for Brink? Unless they are just fancying up “Woot! we haz idz tech 5”.

Such teases. When do we get in-game shots and can you confirm there will be a rubber ducky in the game. Luvs me some rubber ducky.

:stroggbanana:

Modded id Tech 5

(Zhou Yu) #9

The ones up in the art section of the website are ingame shots apparently.

(SockDog) #10

Yeah I know but not quite ready to believe it. Not that on close inspection you can’t see some texture pixelation it’s just they look super vibrant and hand drawn. I really want to see that in motion.

(ReDox) #11

I believe so too but I would like confirmation.

Oi! Ya! ‘Da’carp u us’‘in Ta’ render 'dem screenies…arrgh!?

-so yea, sup with render engine?

(DeanoC) #13

Its a heavily modified Quake Wars engine (idTech 4), its got a completely new renderer, new multi-core architecture (a job system for NUMA (PS3) and SMP systems), a new tools framework and lots more.

We think its the best of both worlds, get tried and tested Quake Wars tech (its often underestimated how much time it takes to get shipping tech) but with new shiny bits where required.

We hope the screen shots, show shiny new renderer is doing okay

So Splash Damage is following in the footsteps of Infinity Ward who have taken idTech3 to a new height.

What does this mean for features like ET:QW TV, will we see a BRINK TV variant out of the box?

(Domipheus) #15

Sweet!

My message is now long.

At the moment we’re just focusing on doing the initial gameplay reveal out at E3. We aren’t talking about ancillary services (including potential spectator solutions a la ETQW TV) just yet, but we’re completely aware of the sort of things you guys would expect from a game like this.

(Floris) #17

Sorry I didn’t mean to be pushy, I was just interested to know how much of the cool extra stuff you gave us for ET:QW could be recycled

seriously, if the periodic hitch is still in it as it’s with every other idtech4 game, i fly to england and do something evil to everyone at sd who says it’s not hitching :infiltrator:

(tokamak) #19

Talking about TV. QW had a brilliant replay mode that caused a whole machinima community on their own, but it also had it’s limitations. Some proper support to control the replay (fast forward, rewind, bookmarks and camera controls) would benefit such development even more, especially in a game focussed on cool moves.

If anything, this game already looks very E-sport friendly. While most fps are very boring to look at even from a third point perspective, a match full of acrobatic players will even look interesting to outsiders and non-gamers.

(SockDog) #20

Wow, I was kinda sold that that was id Tech 5 after seeing the screen shots yesterday. It does look good, will we perhaps get a little “PRE-ALPHA” YouTubage to drool over, would love to see this moving.

I’m with Joe999 on the id Tech 4 issues (although I never really suffered). I hope you can iron out some of the tougher wrinkles of the engine. Would love to see Machinima controls in there too, don’t waste that renderer or the free publicity.

On the plus side, no id Tech 5 means no super complicated modding. As I’m sure it’ll be asked where will Brink stand in comparison to ETQW on the ease of Modding scale?
