Team Overlay and Player Locations

(SockDog) #1

I know we’ve discussed this in the past but I can’t find the thread, perhaps it was a hijack. Anyway. Would like to see something like this in DB, namely.

A Team Overlay as shown on the (Top Right)
and
Map textual locations being shown in chat and the overlay (Top Left and Top Right)

Not sure why that latter one fell out of favour but for me checking an overlay to see the location of the rest of my team is far more helpful than a bunch of dots on a hard to read minimap.

You bring up an excellent point that I hope is being addressed in infancy with this patch – I’m excited to see the first run of improvements on the minimap and limbo map. Contextual display is definitely necessary, and this discussion is absolutely needed. I do think something more elegant than text-based locations can be done, but as an option I’d love to see it.

Anything that can be done to help group teams, rather than crowd them, is a benefit in my opinion.

id like to see something like the fireteam in qw

I prefer this solution to

You want to break a team of 8 (less so in competitive) into smaller groups rather than just displaying all the data on your team? I don’t see the great benefit to that. Or do you simply mean by design and presentation?

I’m not fussy how it is presented as long as it works, what I am interested in is the means of knowing where your team mates are and their status from looking at an overlay. If real estate is an issue this can simply be put on a toggle or hold.

Original thread for those interested (or one of them at least): http://forums.warchest.com/showthread.php/33751-Fireteams-ducks

I also like the fireteam option. It’s nice for pubbing with friends and as long as your whole team can join when competing, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work just fine

Thanks. I swear I searched for fireteam and couldn’t see that one, then again it’s not an unpopular turn a phrase around these parts.

Can you tell me what the benefit is of seeing ONLY the status of you and lets say two friends is over just seeing the whole team? This is a game after all that has 8 player teams, it’s not 16vs16. Is the location and status of people who aren’t your friends irrelevant to the success of the team? The only thing I can think of is that you’d want to just use VoIP between you and your friends, yet this just makes me wonder again how this benefits the team if they’re missing out on communication. If it’s a social thing then I’d have to say get yourself a TS/Vent server to shoot the **** on while you play.

Fireteams:
In my case, I just want to know where my friends are so we can group up or build crossfire points. I think this can be done more elegantly on the minimap or with a shaded icon on the hud. Although I hate hud clutter and would like to see a better solution.

My question isn’t what a Fireteam is useful for, it’s what is the use of a fireteam of 2-4 people over one for the whole team. Surely seeing where everyone is, including your friends (perhaps coloured differently as you suggest) is better than willingly being blind to information about the rest of the team.

I agree there is a question of HUD space in this, it can be optional or toggled, yet size needs to be reasonable to read and display locations clearly.

The framework, concept, and purpose of fire teams is relevant, but I think something more elegant and inviting can and must be done. It’s 2013.

I presume you have never used a fire team with friends before.

Would be awesome if they could add fire team and somehow connect it to voip.

Rarely. Yet all I’ve been doing for the last several posts is to ask what the hell the difference is, only to be met with silence or side stepping.

For me it doesn’t take away from the team play. If I join a server with my friends I feel even more detemined to WIN the map and not just frag. Therefore it highlights then more on your screen with a small icon above their head. You’ll find probably 60% of users playing are playing to frag, not to complete objectives. As a medic, I get fairly frustrated following a soldier/engi for them to not get the objective done and just seek out frags. Not only that, it gives you a chance when you are not on teamspeak to talk to your friends only using fire team chat. There are several other little things that I think contribute to it being a nice idea and for groups of friends to use to the full potential!

(SockDog) #17

So, in all honesty, it is just a social thing and has little bearing to teamplay short of tenuously saying that a few people playing together is better than none (assuming anyone not in a fireteam is derping on the server). As mentioned the colouring of friends and even comms I guess could be accomplished in unison to a team wide overlay. My point here is why not see where your whole team is, whether they’re you’re friends or not you are playing with them aren’t you? And if not why the hell play an objective shooter?

(Kl3ppy) #18

I prefer the Fireteam list. When you are in a fireteam you see all the ft mates, if your not in a ft, you see everybody i a list who isnt in a fireteam. The system shuld be pretty similar to the one from etqw. It is pretty nice.

I see very well what SockDog is saying. Having at most 8 players in a team would perhaps make it so that there is no reason for not seeing this information for the whole team. You could press ctrl when looking at the scoreboard and then press your friends, so you would see the whole team, but your friends information is in the most prominent position, whatever that may be. And again the teams being so small, I don’t see why you shouldn’t let the rest of the team see any information you sent for your friend, I doubt the chat would clutter, and the rest of the team could use that information also.
Then again I suppose people want to create secret clubs like this. Because they like that feeling of exclusivity, although it might harm teamwork in the scale of the whole team
