I can’t honestly remember. But there was the strong general feeling that they’re awesome, charismatic, cool, ancient and vastly under-appreciated animals.

And they look like they know something no one else does. What’s not to love?

Hmm… so there isn’t some interesting story about how they became a SD mascot of sorts? I was hoping for an interesting story about that time a tapir wandered in during a session of Quake 3 Fortress and ended up owning everyone.

iirc… it was in that “SD vs. the forum thread” that started it all.

Wils would watch them and Bongoboy would count them.

I would fantasize about tapirs being covert ops as Salteh enticed my yearnings with dramatic imagery and fun-loving non-sense.
…and the cake was good.
