Switching r_mode between maps

Does anyone switch r_mode depending on the map?

I always use r_mode 6, but I tried 4 on tc_base on public today; it’s a map which you don’t have to shoot all that much on long distances, so why not? It’s suppose to give you more headshots, which seems right, and the FPS is more solid–as if it wasn’t already on tc_base.

There is hardly any maps where r_mode 4 isn’t an disadvantage, besides tc_base; supplydepot maybe. There is, of course, the nuisance of manually vid_restart, but it’s worth it.

Thoughts?

Never been much of a fan of changing settings during the game, for me it just leads to inconcistensy. Like changing fov depending on distance to object, or picmip depending on map etc etc. Just ends up with me playing worse than better, except maybe some placebo effect while trying it out.

The inconsistency is bad, I agree, but I’ve never had any problems with FOV, though; I’ve been using it so long that it feels completely nautral to me. The question is: Is it really placebo? I think a high FOV (100+) is placebo, but a lower r_mode makes the targets larger, more pixels and so on. Too bad the console looks like shit in r_mode 4.

I don’t take it that serious to justify it

Question: what resolutions available for my hd4850?
I tried to set 800x500 or 1024x640 (for better fps), but it changes aspect ratio to 4:3 and black lines are formed on the edges of the screen.
1280x800 and bigger are alright.
Any solutions?
