I’ll note immediately that I haven’t played the game very much yet. I just nearly finished one match, so I’ll just instead focus on what IS fun in general, rather than trying to pick out specific things from the game as it stands today.
So what’s fun? For me, fun is a lot of things and for game designers all around the world. Fun can mean so many different things to different people.
I think learning and exploring is an inherently fun experience. Experimenting with different flank routes, experimenting with different weapon loadouts and equipment to try and get a different result. This exploration within the map constraints is actually what keeps me going back to Battlefield 3. I can play the same map over a thousand times because I know that the flow of people and the dynamism that this provides, creates new and interesting experiences even though the map itself doesn’t change. DB so far seems to be a bit too linear for this kind of flow to form.
Also currently there is no variety for loadouts and equipment, so it’s very difficult to experiment outside of just finding the right class for yourself.
Secondly, games inherently are also about reward. Whether it’s winning, getting points, gaining ‘killstreaks’ or just being recognized for your efforts. I’m noticing a distinct lack of reward in DB at the moment. However there is no shop at the moment so that’s not an entirely valid criticism just yet.
Thirdly, killing **** and blowing stuff up is fun!
Because of the combination of the movement model and the shooting model of the game, I felt a bit disoriented, even though I’m a fairly good FPS player otherwise. It’s this strange mix of arena-shooter based movement and COD-era-shooter shooting mechanics that threw me off a bit. So if it threw me off as a more or less hardcore FPS player, it’s probably going to have an even bigger effect on the more casual players.
Anyway, that’s my 2 cents. I hope you guys figure it out. I really did like Quake Wars and I’d love to have a similar experience brought up to today’s standards.
Best of luck to you guys,
Riho K.
