Suggestion: More character visibility in first person.

(Nibbles02) #1

I feel that the character models are actually a bit under-appreciated, since the most you’ll see of them ingame is a bit of the upper body and nothing below the thighs, as the loadout preview screen cuts off before the knees, and you’re generally too busy fighting for an objective ingame to admire the character visuals.

I propose that character bodies(at least the legs) should be visible from first person, much like they were in Fallout: New Vegas and in Skyrim with some mods;

It’s also not like it’d obstruct much, as you’re usually looking up or at a diagonal angle, but it would add some nice aesthetic to situations like the stairwells in Chapel and Bridge, where there are positions where you can look down over the rails and see yourself instead of floating like a disembodied torso.

For example:

Nader’s leg guards are astoundingly good-looking:

I’d bet you that most people didn’t even know Phoenix had a robotic leg:

Fletcher’s lower body in general also looks pretty armored and combat-ready:

Also, on a similar note, some areas with reflections(like in Trainyard, where there ought to be puddles everywhere, because, let’s face it, this is London) would look fantastic and add a ton to the volumetric environment.

Anyways, I’d like to know what everyone else thinks about this, such as other suggestions and criticisms about the idea.

cant be more right.

(Szakalot) #4

i appreciate the sentiment but this is an arena shooter, i dont want pointless details to obstruct my field of view.

THE VAST majority of the competitive scene would turn off gun models as soon as it would be possible

Or checking out who has the biggest boob among all DB female mercs.

I don’t need more clutter, sorry.

Obviously not mine monkey. Atleast she doesn’t have everything in this game.

(TheStrangerous) #7

And in order to be more immersive, it would require more clothing physics.

Rhino has the biggest ones, DUH!

(watsyurdeal) #8

That’s actually surprisingly hard to do, the reason you don’t see your legs is because the game has separate models for player view, and world view.

Everything from projectiles, player models, etc, the player and world views have separate files. That’s just how UDK works, to do what you suggest would require a lot of changes to the engine files themselves.

They’d have to turn DB into pseudo third person shooter, with permanent fist person mode enabled.
Obviously if they did, things would look “more immersive”.

And remind me why FPS characters stick their face so close to their guns?
Least in some modern TPS, characters can look back and shoot (unless it’s Killswitch inspired “chest lock” camera). But I do know in Lawbreakers you can shoot behind your back, but not turn your head around…

(Black) #10

Seeing your legs is just another gimmicky first person visual. It’s really more distracting than anything if I wanted to look down from on top of a bridge.

Well, first, I stated that my main concern is that roughly 1/3 of the character models are basically wasted detail, as you never get to see them, that being the knees and below, and that the game would look better from a first-person perspective if you could see your legs. The screenshots I posted from FO3 and Skyrim are to demonstrate how little of the screen it takes up, even when you’re actually looking back on yourself.

The way that FO:NV did this was they only rendered waist-down so that it obstructed maybe 1/8 of the screen, so it never compromised functionality.

Really all they’d have to render is the knees down because that’s all that’s cut off, which isn’t much more to render than the arms are in first person. If anything, they could just add the leg models to the arm model file for the first person perspective(which would add more polygons, but let’s face it, the game engine can run Dome, it shouldn’t have a problem running the equivalent of another third of a player model, since it already renders up to 16 at once, plus visual effects like explosions, light rays, and bloom), and add appropriate animations for 8 cardinal directions, which already happens for most directions with the gun sway anyways.

(BananaSlug) #13

if its going to be implemented, make it as option, its just more shit on your screen imo

and it seems soo unrealistic, every time is see this i am like " :unamused: "
i dont believe sd could make it realistic

(Nibbles02) #14

It’s unrealistic to see your feet?

(Freezer_Boss) #15

@TheStrangerous Fist person mode ? Me gusta

(terminal) #16

If anything I want less useless visuals on my screen. This game’s marketed to be a competitive shooter, adding this just clutters up the screen even more. (Plus if they do add this people will realize how ugly some high tier camos really are)

(Nibbles02) #17

Again, this would literally not obstruct or “clutter” any visuals whatsoever. The only time you would see this is looking at the ground, which does not happen often unless you’re a medic or a Proxy, and even then it would take such a tiny amount of screenspace that it wouldn’t even matter.

(Szakalot) #18

what about all the instances of looking directly below, such as when you are on the ledge firing down. What about instances when you are high in the air firing at people below you.

I’m not saying its a bad thing for those who want the immersion, as long as the competitive people out there can turn it off. However, this is a considerable amount of resources considering all the skins/mercs that I would rather the devs used to improve on other aspects of the game.

(Amerika) #19

I would not want my view when looking down obstructed just to see a model I don’t care about seeing. I’m here to play the game and not feel immersed.

(Your worst knifemare.) #20

Ah perfect a way to see my sexy legs, just hope im not Rhino when i look down…
