Last night I specced someone on my team who seemd to be exactly behind a tree, shooting a deployed MG42. Thinking this was strange, I recorded a demo. Looking at the demo in third person shows them not behind the tree at all, but beside it. Looking at it in first person shows exactly what I saw when spectating.
Today, I tried deploying in a similar position, and found that
- the tree does block your view and fire, as it should, so this is most likely not a cheat or exploit.
- the bullets don’t originate from exactly the center of your view. The bullets come fromt the center of your backpack, while your POV is in front of that.
- a demo recorded of this has your POV a different place than it was in game, matching the results I got when spectating last night.
Conclusions:
- Demos and spectating mg42 gunners does not accurately show you what they are doing.
- If you deploy your mg42 near an obstruction, it may block your fire at some angles, even if it looks like you have a clear shot.
If the splash devs, bani or shrub want to look at the demos, I would be happy to provide them. One is a bit large, so I would rather not post it to my limited web hosting.
I think this has been mentioned before, but hopefully this gives more details.
