It started 7am PDT (GMT -7)

(SockDog) #2

Guess that’s the stats servers going in.

(Jimmy James) #3

We can only hope.

(Rosie the Riveter) #4

the servers are back up

(Arcanoxer) #5

Steam was such a horrible decision. :frowning:

(Darksider) #6

What of been better GFWL? lol…

(SockDog) #7

Exactly what about the release on Steam has been horrible?

(legend123) #8

the amount of downtime this games gets because of it.

(SockDog) #9

That amount would be?

(Deadwalking) #10

To many other games work flawlessly while Steam servers go down for maintenance, for it to be a horrible decision to use Steam. The bad decision was causing the servers to require a connection to Steam in order to stay live.

(Arcanoxer) #11

Nope, its all the same DRM bulls***.

I talk about Steam, not the Brink release,

(zenstar) #12

"Chat, matchmaking, game lobbies, and the Store and Community web sites will be unavailable. Content downloads and game play are expected to remain unaffected. "

Did you even read the source?
There was no downtime for the game. Nor have I been aware of any at any other time.

Don’t care if you like steam or not, don’t make up stuff.

Personally I like steam. Always worked well and is a far better DRM than some of the alternates. Now if only they’d insist that all games use only steam drm for the steam versions.

Posted this info because, unlike most game servers, BRINK servers “disconnect” and boot players out to menu whenever STEAM is unavailable for >30 seconds. The server ops need to manually restart the servers. (spawnServer mp/*.entities) The post was meant as a heads up. Hopefully SD will fix this in time for the DLC release.

Fair enough. I retract my previous post then. I’ve never run into this but I take your word for it.

As I thought.

This is strange, I wonder if SD can comment on why this happens and if it is a bug.

Agree. Odd behaviour for servers. Even TF2 will let you continue playing after servers lose steam connection. They won’t let you change your loadout (or may revert to standard… i don’t remember) but they don’t freak out.

(Rosie the Riveter) #17

Exactly. TF2 players lose their loadouts but not connection. No effects to DODS, L4D, L4D2, KF, FAS etc

A German gaming community has made available an application that will restart the server but I’ve not tried it

That I can verify as being true, I have been booted to main menu, with no XP gains because the server lost its connection to steam.

Personally I hate all invasive DRM and see it for what it truly is, a way to spy on you purely for marketing purposes.

Its like when you close Brink and suddenly get popup’s for new releases on steam. They just remind me of those badly written viruses from the late 90’s.

I think one of the BRINK patches fixed the XP issue so that you do keep XP earned that round.

The Pop-up messages from STEAM can be disabled in STEAM–> Settings --> Interface

I like the messages. Easy to close and sometimes I spot a deal I want.
As far as DRM goes Steam is one of the nicer ones around. I actually like Steam because it keeps everything organised and updated.
You want DRM to complain about then complain about the ones that limit your installations and require constant connection to a server for singleplayer games etc.

I have no issues with Steam thanks.
