Steam got hacked?

(Atagi) #1

Anyone?

Moderator note:

It goes without saying, but avoid logging into any Steam websites until the security issue has been remedied.

If you know you’re already logged in, do NOT visit any Steam Community or Steam Store URL.

This includes any internet browsers and the Steam Desktop/Mobile Client!

Playing games online should be fine. It’ll also prevent anybody else from logging into your account via desktop client.

Do NOT unlink PayPal, do NOT remove credit card info from Steam’s websites. You may choose to do that on external websites instead.

Explanation according to Steam DB:
Valve is having caching issues, allowing users to view things such as account information of other users. This is also why the Steam website has been displaying in different languages.

Yea I heard about it from a friend, I tried to go delete my credit card info but I don’t think it’ll help. Getting a new card tomorrow, probably resetting my password and email too.

Yea I literally saw and heard that AFTER I deleted my info.

Okay, in stupid person terms, should I be going nuts about closing the credit card and paypal?

(SteelMailbox) #6

@Rjsto
Yes.

(Bestfinlandball) #7

Good lord i’m happy that i only use PaySafeCard to pay steam stuff

(XavienX) #8

So it’s fine to just play games online, just don’t do anything that has to do with money.

Well shiet

(Faraleth) #10

Yup! Hope you don’t mind, but I edited the /r/steam sticky into your first post so that people can read it. Best keep people informed! ^^

It looks like their caching server (varnish) or CDN (Akamai) is fucking up. If this is a hack then its a very weird one.

(sentimentalDime) #12

Goddamnit… Why did I even open this thread, when i knew it was just going to trigger my paranoia?

(MarsRover) #13

This is the moment you should realize, if you already haven’t, that having any store credit or any fully automated payment options in an online store is a very bad idea.

It looks like Valve took down Steam to fix this, so right now all we can do is wait.

Valve f*cked up again.
I mean seriously, how could THIS POSSIBLY EVEN HAPPEN?
The biggest gaming platform thingy on PC, and it’s still not secured enough.
I don’t understand tech that much, but come on. Accessing these information WITHOUT even trying? What the hell.
They should seriously start using their money for something else than GabeN’s…whatever they’re using it for.

There is no such thing as a 100% secure system, there’s always a loophole.

I know there isn’t, but this is just plain stupid. Strangers data just appears straight in your face. When stuff like this happens, they should just close the steam and solve it.

(APRenpsy) #17

Well that explains why I can’t connect to anyone.

(APRenpsy) #18

So I looked into it and got confirmation. This was not a hack or DDOS attack it was a mis-configuration in one of Valve’s caching layers. Simply put people can see your information but can’t use it on Steam.

That being said if you are using Paypal for payment you can un-link your account on the Paypal website.

In the future I recommend not saving your info on Steam though I never really trusted them to start with because of how common it is for the servers to go down.

P.S. Oh dang someone post that information already XD

Which they did.

You would be surprised how many third-party layers/components/products/etc are needed to make anything web-related, especially a big platform serving millions concurrent users. These are big black boxes you know very little about, and when they misbehave or have exploitable bugs you’re pretty much fucked until they’re fixed. Then there are human errors, like most probably this current situation, that are also unavoidable because well… humans are creating the systems.

And don’t even get me started how unsuitable the “Internet” is to its current usage, because it was designed 20 years ago as something very different.

So yeah, I hope you sleep well tonight  Personally I’m surprised anything on the Internet works at all, which is a testament to human ingenuity.
