Hi, I know that the concept of splitscreen alone is a stretch, and sorry to be demanding,
but if it is implemented, it needs a halo 3 esque multiplayer guest support system, so that two people can play online splitscreen without the need for both to pay for xbox live gold. I don’t know if this is an issue for PS3 gamers,
(I can imagine that it isn’t, because PSN accounts are free.)
But it would be a great feature to have.
Opinions, complements, Criticisms?
Split screen online support
it makes sense, but doesn’t at the same time…
[note this comes from a pc gamer]
example:
I have my own Xbox tag: WhiteAden
I go over to my friend’s place, who happens to have Brink too, he logs into his account (PlayerXXXYZ)
we go to online play, he’s logged in… how are you thinking this will work? will I be able to play as my own character (which’s linked to my tag) or will I play as a lvl 1 conscript/private “PlayerXXXYZ_guest”…? every time I play…?
I don’t know how Halo works, but there’re no unlockable weapons etc. right? if there are, how does the guest system work? does the guest have access to the ‘host’ his weapons?
I think that’d be the issue… how would it work…?
care to elaborate on how you’re thinking this would work?
here’s my thoughts:
Online Coop:
depending on the host characters progress, the guest can choose a preset bodytype and class. So, when player 1 goes to one of the loadout computers, selects an option that lets player 2 sign in and join. P2 joins in, a screen comes up, asking the player to pick a preset look. could be like 5 for each bodytype. then P2 picks a class, which has weapons and abilities slightly less powerful than P1
and it all goes on from there.
Multiplayer vs. :
guest signs in, chooses preset body/class before matchmaking, gets weapons and abilities similar to P1
The problem is these polls will always say yes.
people ALWAYS want more options like this and there is no reason to say “no i dont want this” its like the female avatar poll… do i want a game with more stuff… or a game with less stuff.
Since this one makes more sense and would be helpful in getting people online i will vote yes.
/me clicks yes
well a reason to vote no would be that the game might take longer to make, possibly more connection problems. ect.
I voted no
I don’t own a console, it’s of no use to me. I’d rather time be spent on game not gimmicks

Implementing split screen is a gimmick?
I understand where you’re coming from, but you have to remember that SD is making Brink for several types of gamers, not just the hardcore PC crowd.
In terms of console games (especially online multiplayer titles), split screen encourages friends to play together locally, which unfortunately is absent in a lot of games right now. I would argue this is huge for audience-driven promotion of the game after release, which can often make the difference between a game that quickly dies out and a game that holds strong for several years after release.
I can see it being an excellent idea for offline coop play on consoles, but the OP was asking for coop online so 2 people could play with only one paying for XBL, can’t see Microsoft thinking that would be good business which is why you don’t see it in other games. Achievments and upgrades would be very hard to calculate as well.
afaik, you both need an account in Halo 3 to track achievments. But I’m not sure, don’t know much about consoles. I myself would prefer multi-monitor support, way more useful imo. Or draggable hud elements. Either would be better use of time for me.
Does it matter that the guest doesnt get achievments?
I didnt think thats what you where on about.
I played as a guest with a friend on h3 quite a few times. not getting the mp achievments was not really a concern.
So what? Why should MY vote be considering that there are other playing platforms; even that there are other players at all? You give your vote, which YOU think is best, and thats it.
As PC player, i also consider a split screen a gimmick. I’d hate to see a PC version get ‘not as well developed’ for something that i dont care about.
Similarly, i would not expect a pure console player expect more video cards support, or console customization, etc. etc. etc.
I can’t see why anyone would think that splitscreen is a better solution than… well, anything really. I need my entire screen. I’d rather play online, or even take turns. Campaign mode is one thing, but I’d not want it disturbing me in online play. That’s just me though.
The reason I don’t want online splitscreen is that it is so easily used for ‘ghosting’ and other ways of cheating. It’s not as bad as having an aimbot, but it’s still not 100% fair.
Splitscreen isn’t a gimmick. It isn’t even close to being the master of all gimmicks.
Now THIS is a giant Gimmick, and is KING of all gimmicks.
I’m all for split-screen online support because I know my brother is going to want to get in on some Brink action, but he doesn’t have an Xbox so he plays on mine. I have no problem playing on half of a screen, we do it with Halo all the time. As long as you can change it to horizontal split like halo instead of vertical or be able to switch, I’l be happy. Playing split-screen does not bother me, and it works well on games like Left 4 Dead and Halo. Please add this, so many games can benefit from it but they don’t include it.
hell yes… i did that on a regular bases in gow1 with friends.
local two players going online.
one with a guest sign in, and thus not receiving achievements and such… but who cares about those?
it is a blast.
Agreed, had many a fun night at my brothers house with a few beers and some split screen online or coop gaming.
this can usable even on PC.
with ATi eyefinity features[and similar(i forgot brand
from NV]and two-tree 22’’-32’’ LCD screens, it can be usable and have no[so significant] drawbacks[in both performance and bugs]
but of course, tradeoff time-money/% of customers to implement it, neligibly low.
so, i suspect, this is not today feature, but moderately far “todo” feats list.
