#splashdamage IRC channel and jump start

(k0k0nat) #1

Hello guys,

as you maybe noticed, splashdamage has an official channel on the Quakenet.
You can reach the channel under #splashdamage.
Most of you know how to handle IRC, for the people who dont know what an IRC-Client is, check out the little tutorial.

 1. The easiest way

Just click on this link -> irc://irc.quakenet.org/splashdamage .
If you use Mozilla or other Netscape-Browsers, the browser will automaticly load the IRC-Plugin ( Chatzilla )
Also Opera supports this protocol.

 1. IRC-Clients and usefull commands

The most popular IRC-Client is mIRC.
Its a free IRC-Client with the most options and optional abilities to include scripts for IRC etc.

You can get mirc at http://www.mirc.com/.
Once you installed mIRC and started your client, you have to choose a nickname and an IRC-Server.
The Quakenet has a lot of servers in different countries, you should use a server in your country for the best connection and response-time.
All this stuff can be find in the option-menu.
If you have finished your setup, click on the connect-button and use the command-toolbar to join the channel #splashdamage.

There are also good picture-by-picture tutorials at the net.
Check out this one: http://tutorial.cam-wiki.org/index.php/Connecting

Some usefull commands for your irc-commandline

X-Chat IRC client
Another free IRC-client can be found on:
http://www.xchat.org/
Respectively the Windows build can be found on:
http://www.silverex.org/download/

SplashDamage’s official IRC channel
SD’s official IRC channel #splashdamage can be found on irc.quakenet.org:6667.

QuakeNet User Accounts
It is recommended that you create a user account on QuakeNet to retain a unique user name. Additionally this allows you to hide your IP, which is also recommended

To create a new account type the following lines into your chat browser:

/msg Q HELLO user@host.com user@host.com

where user@host.com should be replaced with a valid email address of yours.

QuakeNet will send you an email that contains the additional steps required to activate your account. It will also send you an initial password.

From now on you will be able to login into your QuakeNet account by typing in

/msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH username password

In case that you want to change your password to something easier to remember, type in

/msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org NEWPASS oldpassword newpassword newpassword

Additional information can be found on:
http://www.quakenet.org/faq/faq.php?c=52&PREV=1

Don’t forget to read the Security FAQ on:
http://www.quakenet.org/faq/faq.php?c=160

Last but not least, to hide your IP address, you need to type in (after authentication):

/MODE nickname +x

It is highly recommended for security reasons that you do not make your IRC client auth you automatically and that you do hide your IP before joining a channel (since before it will be visible for everyone in the channel). That is, authenticate and hide your IP first, then join #splashdamage!

Have fun and see you later in IRC,
Black

Feel free to post your problems or questions!

 • It is highly recommended that you do not auth and hide automatically and then join a channel
 • Auth and hide your ip first, then join a channel

that you do not make your IRC client auth you automatically and that you hide your IP before joining a channel

Two different subordinate clauses. I was referring to a) dont auth automatically b) hide your ip before joining a channel.

Hope that clears it up.

No not really…

Depends on how you read the sentence I guess. I’m tired
Would change it to do not and do though :nag:

For the truly lazy, and those with IE or Firefox, go here.

Type /nick your_name_here and you’ll be up and running.

No plugins or expertise needed, you will be automagically connected.
