Splash Damages stance on Mumble Overlay Crosshairs?

(STOGE) #1

So I’ve made and finished a steam guide on how to install Mumble Overlay crosshairs, but I’d like to have a disclaimer at the end with some sort of official dev comment about them to disencourage people thinking it’s hacking/cheating.

Can anyone help me out?

Does it really matter? Its not like the cross hair goes away when you are doing something…THere is still something that points the middle of the screen. The cross hair is almost…static , since there arent heavy bloom / recoil mechanics in the game…

And if you cant see the crosss hair properly, you can even change the color and you can change the size…
So my question , why do you need an overlay cross hair?

But anyway ,

Because I would appreciate more crosshair options in the game, and doing this simple tweak allows that to happen. I imagine the devs will eventually put in more crosshair options, but as of now they are severely lacking in terms of customization.

For example, all I wanted was a static green cross as a crosshair - I couldn’t even have that, and from experience of using the overlayed one (That I’m used to from previous games) I can aim a heck of a lot better.

I probably feel this way due to being involved competitively in many games including Quake Live and TF2, but regardless “casual” players must feel a similar way; It wouldn’t exactly hurt to have more crosshairs/crosshair options available for the game.

(STOGE) #4

Also I’ve heard people say the ingame crosshair is actually slightly off (to the right I believe), apparently typing “Showhudcentre” in console will reveal this, but yeah.

Getting used to a dot crosshair (that I don’t use in other games) is one thing, but it not being properly positioned gives all the more reason to use a better alternative.

(ThatRandomGuy) #5

If you feel like this might get you banned / action taken against your account … Just use external crosshairs, i use external crosshair in few games …

Dot?

DB has a Big + crosshair with a dot in the middle…
and im gona check if the crosshair is slightly off to right…

(STOGE) #6

Apparently on a dev stream they said crosshair overlays won’t be banned, since everyone can use them and they don’t effect gameplay to a degree that can be called cheating/hacking. If you classify them as cheating you also have to consider VOIP overlays and the Steam overlay as cheating/hacking, which is stupid if you ask me.

I made this post to get some up to date info on how they feel about them, and hopefully an official saying on the matter.

(ThatRandomGuy) #7

YEAAA ! you are right, the crosshair is slightly off to…left side (for me)

(STOGE) #8

The cross isn’t static. I was looking for a static crosshair and the dot was the only option available until I came across mumble overlay crosshairs.

Plus you say “just use external crosshairs”, that’s essentially what this is. You’re simply changing mumbles default overlay to be centered, with no names listed, and it’s default smiley face picture thingy to a crosshair of your choosing.

You could literally do the same thing with the default mumble smiley face if you wanted just by using a mumble overlay with no names.

Many gaming monitors also come with a built-in function to position a crosshair on your screen, I know this because I have one and it has this (it just didn’t have any crosshairs I liked/that were close to what I usually used).

(ThatRandomGuy) #9

@silveryVase Correct me if im wrong (i have never used mumble), doesnt mumble work like steam? i.e injecting itself into the game process?

(STOGE) #10

Also might as well throw these in here seeing as it’s what the thread is centered around.

Just 1 question…

Why…Go…Through…All…This…Crap… When you could simply use rainmeter ?!

(I actually wanted you to answer my question…but instead you took me for an idiot n linked a guide…anyways)

(STOGE) #12

Personal preference, I also wasn’t aware you could do anything of the sort with rainmeter, and I use mumble on a daily basis so I’m very familiar with the software anyway.

It isn’t exactly hard to get setup either, quite a simple installation if you ask me.

Fuck, this is going to bug me forever now. Mine is one pixel down and one to the right. Not a BIG deal, except for long range shooting, then it matters.

SD doesn’t like them being used but it’s not against the rules either because it’s impossible to enforce.

Lol it isn’t my fault you posted after I posted without checking what I posted beforehand

(i didnt read the guide) , you need to replace some files n stuff right?

Rainmeter allows to you whatever the heck you want in the middle as overlay , you can even use a .gif as crosshair :stuck_out_tongue: (If you are good at c , # , ++ you can do wonders , like color changing crosshair…a thing that DB doenst have)

(STOGE) #17

Like I touched upon in a previous post you’re simply changing mumbles default overlay to be centered, with no names listed, and it’s default smiley face picture thingy to a crosshair picture of your choosing.

You could literally do the same thing with the default mumble smiley face if you wanted just by using a mumble overlay with no names, this would require no file replacing and just a mumble overlay (which are perfectly fine to use).

The .dll file you replace simply allows the crosshair.png to be used within the overlay, and adds the functionality of pressing “Insert” to turn it on and off. (As it’s still visible in menus/scopes etc…)

If you see an old CRT monitor with a permanent marker spot on the middle, you know who used it.
