Splash Damage Server suggestion

(Vengeance) #1

This topic is mainly for the regs on the SD server, just wondering what u guys would think about having custom maps introduced to the server. Has much as i like the original maps, they are starting to get a little tedious.

Im all for custom maps and would like to see them, since i always enjoy playing new maps

Dont know if custom maps will be introduced at all just want to know what u guys think

(damocles) #2

Yeah, I occassionally play the SD server and would liek to see customs. I’d like to see customs on ALL servers. There’s no excuse for not updating server rotations every now and again (except for those cheap ass server hosts that don’t let people upload new content)

(Englander) #3

Its definately time for some new maps to be added or replace some of the existing ones.

(Sauron|EFG) #4

And a mod.

(Rippin Kitten) #5

Heh, running a mod on the Splash Damage server would be admitting defeat. =)

(Domipheus) #6

I dont think any mod would be fit for the SD server tbh, im not really a fan of server side mods in my own right

(Englander) #7

Iam not bothered with a mod either ,just the maps will do

I think shrub as lost the plot with all the cross over skills and I prefer SD’s original format of ET much more.

(blushing_bride) #8

it depends on what maps they put in. I dont follow the mapping thing too closely but the few that ive tried have been very poor. One of the truely great things about SD’s (check out my brown nose) is the details like the mosque in goldrush or the little signs in battery telling you where to go. I still enjoy looking at all the maps espeically oasis and goldrush. Everytime i play i notice something new whereas mod maps tend to be box rooms inserted into bumpy terrians. So i would welcome any new maps but i refuse to play a game where i run through box rooms; its like going back in time and playing the original wolfenstien. dull as ditch water

(Spinne) #9

I agree with Blushing Bride (checks in mirror to look at colour of own nose). I think all of the regular ET maps are visually superb and the old RtCW maps don’t look as good in comparison. But I’ve seen a few visually impressive customs as well that are also pretty good to play IMO, e.g. Rhine 2, Flak Cannon, Beach (the latest version with the screened-off compound), D-Day (a face-lifted and enlarged version of Beach from RtCW) and Tower and Slider (a really imaginative approach to building an ET/RtCW type map). Yup, I’ve been playing a few customs!!

:fiesta:

(Englander) #10

Iam not that bothered when it comes to visuals ,obviously its great to have good looking maps but I prefer a less stunning map with great FPS and good lay out than maps that look good but arnt as good to play on ,the key is a mixture of both.

TBH iam more concerned with the way the map works and how much fun you have doing the objectives,For e.g. The Dust Alpha map is pretty bare compared to maps like Oasis or Gold Rush but ive always enjoyed games when ive played on it,you can lay mines and build constructables so to me it isnt like RTCW you still feel like your playing ET.

It would be good just have a taste of some new maps ,if the majority think they suck then they can take um back off,it would be good just to have a taste of something else on top of what we already have.

The tower and Slide map is really imaginative but it just doesnt fit into the world of ET so please not that one

(Sauron|EFG) #11

I agree, but it can still be run without all that crap. Bug fixes only (and maybe shoving) would be nice.

Flak Cannon and Flughafen both looks good, but have pretty low FPS. Beach not only looks bad (IMHO of course :blah: ), the FPS is worse than on Radar! (=I won’t be playing that one.)
RTCC2 plays good, but may favour defense (I’ve only played it once so far though). DS_Bunkers is a big frag-fest, but might be fun to play once in a while. MML_Church looks interresting although it’s just a straight conversion of a RtCW map.

(Bongoboy) #12

Good point, Venge.

Yes, we’ve been thinking along those lines. Not least so we can offer playtested map feedback to the community mappers.

I shall suggest it to the Decision Otter, and see if he gnaws it or gnot…

:moo:

(Lekdevil.NL) #13

Ohmigawd! What happened to the Decision Monkey then? Has he been eaten by the Decision Otter? How awful! What a drama!

Anyhow, I’d like to add that if the SD server goes custom, please make sure you have an http/ftp redirect download server configured. If people are required to gasp manually download stuff to play on a server, it will quickly empty the place out (at least, that’s my experience with running RtCW servers). Having a quick and easy way to get the maps (i.e. automated redirected download) will help immensely, IMHO.

And mods? I’d think that Etpro or Shrubet with all default settings will do fine. Again, as long as it’s server-side only, it can only benefit things (most notably because of the bug fixes present in both mods). The XP saver could be enabled as well. And NO (before anyone starts to whine, bitch and moan), the default settings of Shrubet do NOT alter the gameplay (except doubling the damage needed to put someone into limbo, which is a good thing, IMO). Please read the documentation before commenting (sorry, but I just had my fill of uninformed ā€œshrub sucksā€ posts lately  ).

Just my 0.02.

(fattakin) #14

Please Dont!!

Custom Maps/ Servers are still deadly to get working - a lot of the time servers still attempt to download the map even though i have it placed in my etmain folder :banghead: - Ive doubled checked the maps names / sizes / version ( beta versions multiple versions etc)

So make sure its only the really proven, final maps that yall add!

(blushing_bride) #15

the most important thing for me on SD’s server is the people that play on it, i’d rather play a custom map with my regular chums then play an SD map elsewhere with some of the arseholes that appear on other servers, so i’d be happy to try custom maps (but we need to keep the regular maps too). Count me in but point me to where i can download them as i get a 2kb download rate on auto download servers

(Englander) #16

I agree ,keep the regular maps we already have but maybe make them in to 4 map campaigns.

Maybe to add 1 custom map to both the regular campaigns would be a
good start.

(Miles Teg) #17

I’m not exactly a regular on the SD server, but I play there a bit (and I agree totally with the comments about civilised players there), so I’ll throw in my opinion.

I’d like to see some custom maps played there (as one of the afflictions I’ve usually met when playing custom maps is that three-quarters of the players don’t have a clue what’s going on and half of those who do don’t care to explain :bash: ), but it would be good to keep it to maps that have a more ā€˜professional’ feel to them (at the very least, listing the objectives in the limbo menu).

But I think that it would be better to put a third campaign, consisting of custom maps, onto the server, rather than adding custom maps to the existing campaigns. They’re a good length already.

(Vengeance) #18

Thx for the replies guys and who knows maybe soon we will have some customs

(Brevik) #19

I’m with Miles Teg on this one, the insertion of another three map campaign would be perhaps be the best idea - but they need to be good maps - not just gameplay wise, but atmosphere and appearance too.

Please don’t do anything more than three map campaigns…

I like the look of Flughafen (or whatever it’s called), and Flak Cannon, but I’ve not played them yet (for the reasons given by others above) so I don’t know how good they are to play.

Since when have any of us been civilized? :poke:

(Miles Teg) #20

It’s the way that you don’t shoot at me when I’m on your team that I particularly like.
