I think the following will pretty much be what you can expect as an answer from SD on this subject:

I was thinking the other day that it would be awesome to have an ET2 built on the d^3 engine. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
To be honest, I think I’d rather see it on the source engine. D3 looks great, but it’s a different kind of great. It excels at sci-fi and modern looking graphics, but I don’t think it’s going to be that special at making large outdoor terrains and gritty, grimy, ruined structures.
I might be wrong - I can only base this upon what I’ve seen so far of the D3 engine.
i hope you are wrong, seems unlikely that a new game engine from ID would not be good at outdoor and large areas.
If you look at Q3 that’s also very different from ET.
SD can you tell if you can strafejump in the D3 engine?
If you look at Q3 that’s also very different from ET.
Yeah, that’s because when Q3 engine was first released, it could not handle outdoor areas. It had to be modified by ID to do so in the team arena expansion. Since it’s release, the Q3 engine has undergone massive revisions by several companies.
I believe that when the D3 engine is first released, it too won’t handle large outdoor areas very well. If you look at the D3 outdoor snapshots they are heavily fogged, a sure sign the engine isn’t too good at large open spaces. In time as hardware progresses, the D3 engine will no doubt be revamped much as the Q3 engine has been and one day will do everything needed of it, but that day won’t be very soon.
It’s my friend Damocles…
Here’s the only outside picture I could find for DOOM 3… and things look pretty textured and grimy to me…

Funny, I don’t see much fog in that one.
Well actually here’s an older one, low res… even still I dont’ see fog and I’m pretty sure this is outside…

The ONLY screenshot that has fog in it is this one…

And I don’t believe that one is outside because you can see a giant wall on right in the backround in the middle. Looks to be underground or in some strange cavern, crazy dig or whatever… which would lead me to believe it’s meant to be there, but I’m sure you’ll tell me otherwise.
The only reason I don’t believe ET/RtCW will come with the D3 engine right away is because D3 is only supporting 4 players simultaneous at the moment for multiplay. Not sure if that’s how much the engine can handle or simply what their goal is.
I wouldn’t mind seeing it on the soure engine, but I severely doubt id would buy an engine from another company for their game.
That last pic is a prime example of what I’m talking about. The wall in the distance, is not very far away, and where it disappears into the distance it has to be fogged away, no doubt using fog clipping to reduce the amount of processing on the scene.
Todd Hollinshead said not so long ago that the D3 engine was not being designed to handle outdoor areas, but D3 will most likely have some areas set outside. The only outdoor scenes so far seen have had quite short viewing distances. I have yet to see one displaying a shot with much distance in it.
It looks to me like the D3 engine will have a hard time being able to handle wide open spaces, the kind you need in a game like ET where sniping and mortars play a large part. This ties in with the fact that D3 doesn’t use a vis process to determine what is drawn, instead simplified portals are used to divide it into areas and light sources are then used to determine what gets drawn. Having a large open area would likely require multiple lights (not the sun, but any areas that are structures on the terrain will have lights inside them).
I too doubt very much we’ll ever see ET or RTCW on source because it is IDs license, but I can dream…
I think you missed what I said… yea the wall in the backround is VERY short distance…
the other pic outside with the spider guys is almost surely further away yet there’s NO fog whatsoever…
Seems purely atmospheric to me…
It woudl be nice if someone of Splash Damage answered us
PS:The only map with distances far away i remember in wolf is assault. So what are u talking about, who said we cant have maps like base or village that aren’t real maps “outside”? They are still much fun!
Splash Damage and id are programmers, they can make littles modifies to make compatible the code. The proof is Most of the fps games use ID engines and they are all different
There is a mod of quake where u drive a car … so? :bump:
PPS:U want to get rid of the fog? r_uifullscreen 1
Damocles was most probably just talking about ET2, while thinking about terrain maps that are quite popular in ET, like Fuel Dump.
Of course the Doom3 engine will be fine for “indooroutdoor” maps like all the RTCW maps or Goldrush.
I’m still not excited about RTCW2, because I wouldn’t be able to run it anyway.
I don’t need new engines to have fun with games, so it will be a looooong time until I buy hardware to run the D3 engine well.
If you are looking for something to play, go and get Call of Duty. There is a demo available.
It’s been asked here before, and the only response it got was the one Lekdevil quoted above.
Anyway, as with all things concerning this id/Activision franchise it’s up to id/Activision, although SD most likely would love getting a contract like that. AFAIK id haven’t made any public statements about a sequel, so I wouldn’t expect to find any answeres in here…
When it comes to the engine I can’t imagine they would use anything other than D3, unless they make us wait another X years and the next id engine. The HL2 physics certainly would open up some interresting possibilities though…
Even if nothing official has been decided in the board rooms of activision or ID you can bet that SD are prime candidates for making stuff seeing as they’re good at it. But i reckon the prime factor in their favor is their cheapness. I’ve heard they can be ‘had’ for as little as a nice box of cookies.
I don’t know, we give you all of this AND a dancing banana, and you just ask for more :bored:
