Speed from Allied spawn to tank - strafe jump?

(Basie) #1

So, we’ve been playing a few clan matches and noticing that on Goldrush everyone gets better speed than us from the first Allied spawn up the hill to the tank. Often they’re hitting us while we’re still trying to lay mines etc. Is this the result of strafe jumping? I was under the impression that could only really work well downhill.

Soon as the warmup timer hits one second, hold down the forward key (and move mouse left slowly, to miss the columns). Then sprint/strafe jump. strafejumping works very well downhill, but works when slightly uphill.

Is there a good site to learn the strafejump once and for all? Or can someone explain it really, really slow?.. I’m kinda jerking the mouse and strafe - sometimes it works quite well, but I don’t think I really know what I’m doing :???:

Let me know a time and we’ll get together and maybe I can show ya!

Hahahah here’s my way of illustrating a strafe-jump in this… everything except the mouse movement, but the mouse doesn’t need to move all that much… all strafe jumping is, is moving the mouse up and to the left or right while you SPRINT, move foward, and left or right (I like right) and jump all in one fluid motion. Again, while you’re doing all this, move the mouse from a lower position to a higher one. Here’s what it actually looks like in a post using the WASD keys with JUMP as the space bar…

WD WD WD WD WD WD WD WD WD WD

Caps lock is off, so if you do it fast enough the second you hit your sprint button (which in my case is the shift key) you should also hit your foward and right key… happens quickly enough that they’re capitialized. Obviously where there’s a space is where I jumped (due to my jump key being the space bar). That’s the easiest way for me to explain it without either a video or you actually being here to see. Try it out! I hope it helps you out.

Another thing… try not to strafe-jump ALL the time… the sprint bar helps out tremendously in firefights when one is strafing from side to side… you end up moving faster and it’s definetly tough to hit, and if you’re a good shot, you’ll take down the opposing player in no-time. So save as much sprint as you can… good luck if you’re as impatient getting from point A to B as I am.

Hope this helped.

P.S. Don’t get frustrated if this doesn’t start working for you right away… it does take some practice and some getting used to.

So you change strafe direction in midair, and again between jumps? What about mouse movement, do move left when you strafe right and vice versa, or into the direction you’re strafing? Or does it not matter?

:sigh: I had a nice informative reply to this… but it screwed up. Here’s the outline of it, from what I remember saying.

Move the mouse in a 75/105 degree angle… a little diagonal from straight up and down.

You’ll strafe BEFORE you jump… here’s my example again a bit more explained… where “_” stands for JUMP.

(sprint)WD_
land
(sprint)WD_
land
(sprint)WD_
land
etc…

By the way it doesn’t matter which direction you move your mouse (left or right) thus the 75 or 105 degree angle… left or right

Sorry I can’t explain it better… I hate repeating myself and I had a nice long post about it. :frowning:

(sniser) #8

Don’t worry, I think that’ll suffice… Thanks a lot!

There are different kinds of jumps, the mousemovement depends on what direction you are jumping, whether you want to curve your jump etc, but for a straightforward jump it’s like described above

On the issue of speed: the more I played clan matches, the more I realised that the first attack should be hard and fast. Not always, of course, but very often. When I was new, we stood around and litterarly handed out ammo and med pack to each other. Nowadays we rush and attack.
Oasis, as allies: FIGHT! Away, up left, ignore the command post, turn left, speed, fast, forward, frag the first one (Who yells over the voice comm: “they are here! need backup! they are breaking thru!”) and go for flag!

Yep, aggression is the key. Most maps can be won far easier with a little early aggression, like getting the Tank on Goldrush, or Axis moving the Tug on Railgun. Too many people rush off to do secondary tasks, like build a Command Post or stock up on ammo. Go for the throat right from the off and you can take command of the game.

(Loffy) #12

Yes, and if you fail the first attack, you can THEN build the command post on Oasis, as an example.
For those who want to learn more about strafejumping: I have learnt alot from watching skilled players’ demos. Try to watch the best, and then develop your own style. I’ve also chatted with some of the players whos demos I’d watched and asked them about the strafejumpings.
Where can I find demos?, u ask. They are out there. Just search the net and the ET sites. Here are two sources I found:
Clanbase: http://www.clanbase.com/demolist.php
1337 Loffy: http://arduis.enemy-territory.se/files.php?c=d

EDIT: Here is the final match in the Swedish ET-league autumn 2003:

You got to have this one!

for demos, if you have rtcw then find dzm_trickjump map and then have a look at their forums for demos of its completion. Strafejumping etc is the same (if anything its easier in ET).

Good fps helps some aswell, preferably 125 then 76 then 43, depending on what you can get steadily. I find it easier with a higher FOV (110 or so), though I’m not very good at it anyway.

(Basie) #14

I think I’m slowly getting the hang of it.

Could someone do me a big favour and record a brief demo showing strafe jumping from the initial Allied spawn to the tank? That would be a huge help  I don’t have RTCW so can’t check out the trickjump map.
