Speculation on the UAV

(Jimmy James) #1

Description from Brink DLC Details and Stats Site Update:

This stealthy and lethal device allows Operatives to automatically mark nearby enemies on their radar. For more explosive fun, they can even take direct control of the UAV and detonate it near unsuspecting foes.

Assuming UAV stands for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle it seems this would be some kind of military-style flying drone. At first (before I googled “UAV”) I thought this Ability would be more like the Third Eye Camera from ET:QW. Now I’m wondering how it will work exactly.

My guess is that the Operative releases the UAV and it flies in circles spotting enemies for the team radar in a limited radius. Then, similar to the Third I camera, the Operative can choose to switch views/take control of the UAV and fly it toward the enemy and detonate it.

Seems like this ability, along with the Medic’s Field Regen Unit, will see a bunch of little bots zipping around.

Any thoughts?

I think it’ll be like the flyer drone from ETQW.

Ah, right. I don’t know why that didn’t come to mind, Flyer Drone is one of my favorite abilities. I hope there will be a map objective in the DLC where you have to fly it through an overly complicated vent system to blow up some kind of giant computer.

Sweet.

My guess is there won’t be. Don’t get your hopes up.

I second this notion. Hope its as good

Actually, rereading the description, it seems that, unlike the Flyer Drone, the UAV will initially not be under the Operative’s control but the Operative can choose to take control. Whereas the Flyer Drone only had a direct control option.

Maybe, if you place it in an inconspicuous spot it acts like a security camera, automatically spotting any enemies that run past it.

I think it will be like the Flyer Drone from ET:QW. It worked well, and Splash Damage will probably stick to stuff that works, because they need something that works.

For people who haven’t played ET:QW - you release flyer drone and your view switches to the drone. For the duration of the effect you control your drone, not your character. It emits a distinct whiny sound. Then you press the fire button and it explodes.

In ET:QW the drone moved about as fast as a a player, and could kill one in one close hit. But seeing as this is a console game, UAV will probably move half as fast and won’t be able to kill in one hit. It will also have a hitbox bigger than player.

Lol the UVA looks not usefull at all, but sounds fun.

(jazevec) #9

Another way to describe it is a mini mini redeemer.

Not sure about this one. Will it be a knock down weapon? I am imagining a small helicopter which is slow, or hard to control and makes some noise to balance it out. Like Laserbeak from the old Transformer Shows. Allows you to spy without having to get into danger.

as a side note: Some kind of spider robot you control would be cool in this game. send it through the vents. I am thinking of that 80s movie with Tom Sellick as a detective if anyone wants a point of reference.

Yeah, but that still doesn’t quite fit the description of the Ability. The description seems to imply that taking direct control of the UAV is an option and not a default state.

I was thinking more along the lines of the UAV from BBC 2 (Battlefield Bad Company 2) where you could fly around the map, but instead of firing at your enemies you could self-destruct on them.

(wolfnemesis75) #14

Just a small plane for recon and spying. A better comms hack? and you can use it to drop down and explode if you take control as you would with satchel charge? otherwise, it is just automatic. That may be how it works.

(Terminator514) #15

I was think it wouldn’t be automatic at all (Like CoD) but completely manual, requiring the users input until it detonated.

(wolfnemesis75) #16

It could be. Could be similar to taking control of the turret with an interesting battlefield view. maybe you want to get a disguise first. Will there be a limit on how far it can travel before it is out of range? I’d think you’d have to be in a certain range, right?

(Terminator514) #17

I hope there isn’t a range on it, that would be rather limiting, I hope however that there can only be one UAV out at once.

(Jimmy James) #18

Brink maps are pretty small as compared to ET:QW maps. Maybe a timer instead of a range limit? Flyer Drone had both.
