Specialists

Perhaps not so relevant on public servers: which of these do you think is better for the team?

a) adaptable players who switch classes to whatever type they think is more relevant given the current situation or
b) players who specialise in a single class

For instance, if I there’s a player on my team who I recognise as being an exceptionally good medic, I can adjust my play accordingly and we all benefit. But it can be frustrating to look around and find that he’s switched to some other class…

Of course “specialists” need to at least have a rough idea of the capabilities of all the other classes (and the better this appreciation is, the better they’ll be able to play their own role).

Hehe, logical error because the CovOps would not only be named Bill but also run around as an Engineer, too

Ummm… yes, I think you’re right about that, senator. I’ve got the Covert Ops mixed up with the “infiltrators” in Wolf Tactics: they would show the wrong class against the player name. I didn’t like infiltrators much, but I do like Covert Ops (call me a pervert  but I think it’s the fact that you have to go strip someone’s uniform in ET, whereas in WT you could just choose the enemy class you wanted to impersonate, which is too easy).

I’ll go edit my original post to remove the gaffe…

… so what’s your view on “specialists”?

If I’m a Lv3/4 Medic or FieldOps or Eng I usually continue to play that class throughout the campaign the only thing that keeps me switching class is when all of a sudden there are 5 Medics and no fieldOps or 2 Engs but they don’t know what to do so I go Eng. to get the job done.

If I’m playing with ppl who know their job I usually stay in one class, I don’t care whether the best I could achive that way is Major, all that matters is that we win the map

When I reach Level 4 Medic, I’d prefer if someone else worked up to it, because it’s time for me to re-evaluate and get another class.

I used to specialize, but it seems I get a ton more XP and I’m a lot more useful if I switch.

Case in point, if the 3rd round needs someone with heavy weapons, like a Panzer-Soldier, someone needs to switch to it. Is it going to be someone who has only played one class the entire time? Panzer-Soldier sucks for that first while, because he doesn’t get the improved use of his Panzer til he reaches Level 1 Heavy Weapons.

BUT If I spotted a few points in the first 2 rounds in a 3 round campaign, switch to heavy weapons to clear the path or take out a nest of enemies, I will probably have gotten at least one level before round 3 (round 3 is XP critical, but not quite - I don’t make XP out to be the golden mana of divine goodness, but the little bonuses here and there add up and give you an edge), then in round 3 you can be of use when those sticky hold-ups come up.

There’s time when the best way to move forward is to blow the guys holding you back into little chunks, IMO.

I am MORTAR HOE “specialist”

While I dont specialize in a single class, I think its most valueable to have someone who changes class to suit needs of game/team. Its an objective based team game, and team players are focused on winning.

Or stay one class thru a whole map b/c the need will remian, such as allied engie on gold rush.

I love to see an FO/Mortar h03 who understands interdicting fire, a medic who avoids fighting and focuses on reviving those teammates who are attacking the objectives, and an engie who who focuses on those objectives immediate to victory. COs need to scout mines and E positions, not just swipe uniforms, and everyone shld focus on killing enemies medics.

So if your a mortar ho3 who interdicts E, have at it all game, and if I go FO, Ill hit ya off w/ lots of chips (ammo). Its not just accuracy, its where you lay down your rounds.

I play medic 80% of the time, 95% in rtcw. In that 30 min game, we was having fun with FF on, and then it got voted to FF off, I tried to warn them…

I’m one of those suicidal medics who’ll revive their teammates 90% of the time before I kill the enemies. I like jumping off of buildings and reviving people, it looks cool.
