Something wrong w/ ET
Have you done any upgrades recently? Specifically memory and/or video? What O/S are you using, assuming Windows which version? If 95/98, when was the last time you did a clean reformat and reload (If Me, why haven’t you thown the disks away yet)? Have you tried getting the latest video drivers, latest motherboard drivers (yes, they do have them)?
Gonna need something more useful here than, my 'puter’s broke, please help me.
ive done all that except except latest video drivers and motherboard thing
i have windows xp
Assuming the newer video driver doesn’t straighten things out; probably the next few things to check would be:
- Is your disk full, or nearly so? If you’re down to a few hundred MB on a several GB drive windows can tend to act really funny.
- Have you run a virus scan recently? If you don’t own one, a good place to start is:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Its a java based virus scan, and its basically free (I think they ask for some information on you). If you haven’t done a virus scan recently, do it anyway, and do it often. - Have you run defrag recently? XP has a good, builtin, defrag utility. Even if you get the problem fixed, this is probably a good idea. Defrag often, it helps your system’s speed. (personally, I have mine scheduled to run once a week)
- Run scandisk, this is an outside chance, but it only takes a few minutes, and is usually good for a system.
- If you have multipul sticks of memory in your system, you might try pulling all of them out but 1, and try running the game. Take note of the results, change memory sticks and try again. You may have a stick getting flakey on you, you did at least buy memory with a lifetime warranty, right?
- If none of the above have worked for you, and you have access to one, try a different video card.
If you have reached this point, and you still are having trouble, you may be in for the standard windows R&R (reformat & reload). I highly doubt that this should be necessary, as XP seems to be a rather stable O/S. My own system has been running XP Pro since about the time of the official release, and haven’t had any really major hiccups since. At least hiccups that didn’t occur between the chair and the keyboard
Let us know how it goes.
I have tried the defragment, virus scan,
im guessing that its cause i only have 44% left of free space on my comp
so im on a deleting streak i’ll let oyu know how it goes from there and thank u
44% free should be just fine. I’m running about 85% usage on my primary drive and it runs perfectly.
RK
I did all this, i did a ram test and my ram is ok just 1 of those strange problems
u guys r prolly going to laugh but im completey new to computer gaming
and anything thats complex but how will a new vid card help me out
thats the only thing i did not do is get a new vid card and when i get it
which should i get
let me break it down this is what happens
i click the shortcut then the little screen comes the it goes to a full gray
sceen know usually it suppose to go to the game but in the full gray
screen it just restarts my comp never going to the game
i pretty much gave up on the thing
ive done everything immaginable to fix it
i think i know why et is messed up before i installed directx9 it worked, now it dont since i installed it direct x9
could this be a possible problem
Q3 uses Open GL, not DX, so I dunno if it was your dx install.
I would think this is definitely video related. I once set my resolution really high on a crappy card and it just froze on the grey screen, although, it didn’t restart, like you’re stating. Do you think you may have tweaked some video setting to get it in this state?
Which GFX card do you have?
Did you install the nVidia/ATI drivers, or are you using the one that’s included in WinXP? (Microsoft driver + OpenGL = no fun.)
where can i get those drivers i installed some nvidia drive but really dont know which ones i installed
and yes i hav open gl how can i get rid of it
You can’t/don’t wan to get rid of Open GL. You want to install the latest drivers for your card because that will contain the latest (relatively speaking) implemenation of Open GL. Say for instance you have some old version of your card’s drivers, and your game calls an open GL function that isn’t supported by that driver, then your game will barf.
That’s just my n00b interpretation.
