Some reviews are here and it isn't pretty.

Metacritic reviews

To be fair some of them have really poor arguments, complains about players than the game itself or are simply misinformed and repeat it as a fact. I disagree especially with “lack of originality” complaint.

A valid, repeating complaint is obviously the pricing. Locking the game content - access to mercs - behind a steep paywall is going to bite you back. Loadouts, skins etc don’t matter much.

(Ghosthree3) #2

I do so hate it when people say the game is bad because of the players in it.

I wouldn’t call the pricing model a valid complaint though.

(RuleofBooKz) #3

if u played previous SD games for years then a weeks playing to unlock each merc isnt that long,

Yeah the players complain is silly, BUT sadly enjoyment of the game really depends on quality of your teammates and your enemies. When it comes to pricing, quick simply maths will tell you that buying the mercs alone costs more than buying a AAA buy to play game like Battlefield4. Not really competitive.

Not a problem for me anymore as I unlocked enough mercs after 70 hours to enjoy the class variety. Although I’m afraid many gamers don’t have my patience or time.

Some might be willing to dish out money for mercs, but the present pricing is really discouraging to spend money on the game.

What annoyed me personally is the poor level of game understanding in the game reviews. Youtubers and online magazines reviewers made quite outrageous claims about the game.

(Ghosthree3) #5

Sure, except let’s be honest, all games are the same in that area. All games have awful, awful players. The only ones that don’t are older games with a static player base where everyone knows each other.

Sure, except no one is going to buy all the mercs, if they do they’re stupid. First of all no one out there likes all the mercs, there’s got to be a couple that just don’t interest each person. Secondly if you buy all the mercs what’s the point of the in-game currency? Thirdly the game hands you so much currency for free when you first start playing that buying all the mercs changes from being pretty stupid, to astronomically stupid.

Yeah this seems to be the way of gaming journalism though. None of it can be taken seriously, it’s sad.

What is really hiding behind this complaint is unbalanced teams. Teams are often very stacked in DB, cause the way shuffling done is very poor, basically making for a random outcome. Thus, its either an eternal struggle against an overpowered opponent, or an ez-pz steamroll.

(Ardez1) #7

Honestly, the player reviews on Steam will affect the game a lot more then the metacritic review, imho.

EDIT: And yes, I do know that they show the MC number on Steam.

When i first started this game i wondered if it was P2W. Within my first few minutes i started searching for anything related to P2W. Couldn’t find anything that would give a player that would spend real money an advantage over F2P users.
Then i started to try and find out if there was many hackers and hacks. It took me a big week to encounter my very first hacker. But hey every game has a cheater somewhere right? I haven’t seen a hacker since then.

The game itself is really fast paced. You can basically parkour through the map to reach certain spots quickly and easily. Furthermore the guns really feel good and the abilities that the mercenaries offer really feel balanced and they update the game quite alot with balance changes if needed. They really listen to their playerbase and i hope they will continue doing this later on.
My score for the game is a 9 because i think it’s a good Fast paced shooter that some people were really trying to find out there in the F2P genre. Give it a try i’m sure you’ll like it .

@PetriK93 Have you even played the game before writing your crappy review? Also this AngryJoe is totally wrong because this game is NOT pay2win. You can get everything without spending a dime. It doesn’t even take long to get whatever you need really.

@Davidkimyy Cobalt and Gold Cards are just for cosmetic purposes they have the excact same stats as Bronze cards which are freaking easy to get your hands on. Thanks for giving this game a 1 u weird prick. get your **** straight

While this is true, it doesn’t have to be this way. A greater focus on matchmaking would improve the quality of matches for everyone if players were loosely bracketed by skill level (bad players wouldn’t get smashed by veterans, and veterans wouldn’t get annoyed with poor team mates etc).

Ultimately, you can’t really say a game is good if every match you play is bad and frustrating. Over the past couple of days, I have had one single match that was actually fun to play, because both teams were balanced and really fought for the win. That is as good as it gets, but it happens so rarely. Every other match was a pain because of the large number of players that are far below the skill floor and should only be playing with and against each other.

After TF2 went F2P I got to the stage where I preferred playing with the bots when my favourite servers were empty, as it was more fun than playing with the bads.

Totally agree. If the player base is a meter about how good is a game, then what metascore LoL or CS:GO would get? (No offense to people playing them)

Also, I know big reviewing sites like IGN and Gamespot are not the bible, but I would wait to see what they will rate the game when it will be finally released. These reviews are just as non reliable as the Steam ones.

“4/5, stuff is too expensive.”

(srswizard) #15

Well, he opened with a ton of good info about the game, something that new players should appreciate.
Here’s my summary of the video. I might have missed some things, but I think I got most of it here.

-Likes the multi objective gameplay, but would like to see more different types of objectives and side objectives.
-DB is not very impressive graphically, sort of like a downgrade from Brink.
-Maps are kinda brown and grey, with not all that much variety.
-It’s a skillful shooter.
-Weapons could be more original.
-Game runs fine for him, most of the time, but he mentions frame drops at times.
-Nice details. He mentions fragger counting with his fingers, when cooking a nade.
-Gun sounds are a little anemic, but he likes the voice acting.
-Map design is good.
-He wishes that there was a free engineer merc available at all times.
-He’s having a lot of fun with it, and it’s his go-to-FPS right now, mainly because of the multi-objective gameplay, and the TTK and recoil are to his liking too.

Menus and options

-Mentioned the menu lag.
-Good amount of customization options, he seemed pleased.

Monetization

-Dislikes $10 mercs, would like the prices halved.
-Boosts could be cheaper too.
-Would like a system for selling cards for ingame credits, to reduce grinding.
-Likes the mission system.
-“It’s okay” (the monetization system).

My own notes

-He was very well informed, unlike some other reviewers.
-He likes using BR16, what a freak of nature.
-I agree with most of his opinions.
-Dirty Bomb was presented in a positive light, and it’s good publicity.

(Amerika) #16

One of the comments from the Gamespot review.

"I remember watching AngryJoe play this and bearing witness to how badly they screw you with those cards - even when he purchased a case of cards he was stuck with nothing but lead and one gold…which was for a class he couldn’t select because it was locked.

Pretty funny stuff.

Well…if nothing else it has pretty nice graphics."

This games worst enemy, seriously, is misinformation and the game not handholding people telling them everything and then repeating it ad nauseum.

(slicK.JTheJackal) #17

One thing I like about Dirty Bomb is that it takes a little effort to get the Merc that you want. This in turn makes you appreciate the Merc more as you had to work for it and also gives you a determination to learn the difference in playstyle required from that Merc.

Unfortunately, the FPS market, and even gaming in general, has adopted the route of instant gratification where the player can play for a short amount of time and be showered with a constant stream of praise and rewards. We see it in every aspect of modern gaming from the mechanics of the games themselves to achievements systems: “Congratulations, you entered your name, here is a shiny badge”. If instant reward isn’t attained then the game is often labelled as a “grind” or even, bizarrely, as “pay2win”.

When having to play an FPS is considered a “grind” because you want to attain an unlockable, then it begs the question “Why are you playing the game?”. If you were enjoying it, then the unlockables would become secondary to your primary focus of enjoying the action.

AngryJoe is one of those people who I would say hurt the game standing by lack of understanding how the game works and how, on what and if you should spend your money in it.

Funny enough user metacritic reviews are good, its the so called “journalists” from gaming websites which gave the game unfavourable scores. Many of those reviews so far are so little known websites, but there is at least one from a well known one. Still with factual mistakes weak arguments.
