some questions about vehicles

(zhyago) #1

first: hello all!

ive played ETQW for a while now but im still a noob and have some questions regarding vehicles:

  1. why isnt it possible/allowed to display a crosshair in the third person view?? it seems like an artificial handicap…

  2. why is it so fingerbreaking hard to control a tormentor/anansi while its best counter rocketlauncher/obliterator is foolproof to use…

  3. why isnt there any motivation to man a vehicle with more then one player? maybe let every crewmember trigger decoys or allow a quicker lock-on with a gunner (anansi/tormentor) or something else but SOMETHING!

do you have some answers/reasons? please let me know!

  3. Felt pen on a screen fixes that(been using this method ever since).

  4. It isn’t hard to control.

  5. Getting somewhere faster isn’t enough?

  1. This can be enabled (and is enabled in current EU rulesets) using ETQWPro mod.
  2. Practice makes perfect, make sure your controls aren’t inverted (this makes it an absolute bitch to control)
  3. The whole idea is that the pilot controls the airvehicle. At least the passenger has a gun they can use.

  1. 3rd person crosshair is inaccurate anyway, a vertical line with a couple of notches wouldn’t hurt though. I think it’s done this way pretty much for balance (so you have to switch back to 1st to fire accuratly).
  2. The air vehicle controls are that way for balance (almost positive, the only player I think knows for sure is Dom who got the strait poop when they interviewed him). If you could control yaw with your mouse (instead of keyboards) everyone would be able to fly like a pro instead of the 5% who actually do.
  3. I wish i could shoot flares from the gunner position, so when you’re manning the MG you aren’t so vulnerable.

For vehicles, there are some key binds that will really help you. Context binds are your frind because you can bind things to your mouse and still have those buttons used for something else when you are out of the vehicles. Here’s some to consider:
Bind flares to mouse 3
bind freelook to mouse 2 (this is especially helpful in the tormy and bee)
bind 3rd person toggle to MWheelback
bind next weapon to mouse 4 (switch between LAW and rockets for instance).
etc.

It’s helpful to set up different contexts for different types of vehicles, here’s some groups you may want to make special binds for: Flyers (Anansi, Bumblebee, Tormentor); Seige Vehicles (Desi and Cyclops).

Also consider changing your vehiclesteerkeyscale to make them steer a little slower (in particular the Titan can get weird and it’s easy to oversteer it).

I fly a lot in ETQW, it’s probably what I’m best at. My advice for you:

-don’t bind weapon switch to your mouse, because when you hit it it will jiggle your mouse and the best pilots always have a high sensitivity in order to pull off crazy maneuvers
-bind your decoys to Mouse 2 (alt fire) with a contextual config so it only happens when the game detects you are in a flier
-if you have a mouse with extra side buttons, make one of the thumb buttons the use key (also seat switch and instant repair for vehicles) and make the other enter/exit vehicle. It makes bailing out of the flier almost instantaneous if you practice.
-immerse yourself with the advanced flight controls, eventually you will acclimate to them, basic controls are unacceptable and leave you very vulnerable.
-merely decoying to avoid a lock isn’t good enough, if you don’t evade while decoying then the missile might still hit you.
-as a flier your target priority should be: enemy fliers, mortar/rocket arty (you cannot decoy these locks and these can even hit you without locks), AVTs, radar, enemy armors, rockets/oblits, snipers, then other stuff. The APC is the most dangerous ground vehicle in the game to a flier
-practice quick ascents and descents in the tormentor, that is the key to winning vs the anansi, never approach the anansi on a level horizontal plane to it, you will almost always lose. always attack the anansi from above or below it
-whenever flying the anansi ALWAYS hold the UP hover key while flying EXCEPT when trying to flip upside down. Especially use it when breaking.
-when flying at an enemy aircraft, do a barrel roll just before you attack and fire while upside down, 9/10 times this causes their aimed shot to miss and yours will still hit.
-if you see enemy infantry in a clear open space or on top of a hill or object, try and kill them by scraping them with the bottom of your aircraft.
-when using the tormentor to fight the titan, get right above the titan and slowly spiral down on it while firing to make sure that it can’t fight back (its firing arc won’t go that high for either of its guns)

Or you could download Szakalots flying guide which is 30 minutes of quality dogfighting footage combined with tips, tricks and tactics!
Anyone have a link to it somewhere?

Learning to fly used to be such a pain in the ass. I used to crash myself into trees all the time.

But after you take the time to learn it, it gets a lot easier.

TAW|Feanor has some great pointers… Its been a while, but, I’ve flown with him and against a few times in the past… Outstanding pilot!!

rememer: Practice, Practice, Practice

Offline… try to fit the the aircraft in to strange places…
Some easy ones… in Valley, fly through the tunnel…
Also, in Valley, blow the lower fence under the shield gen and fly up the tunnel, spin around and fly back out… Check out all the maps with aircraft, and just fly…

The BattleStrogg Galactica mod is fun for flying as well.

Try fly through the last stage of Tourian without hitting anything all the way through to the reactor room at full speed, it’s doable but takes some practice.

You all wrong!

bind w to move up
bind s to move down
bind a to turn left
bind d to turn right

all default up till now

bind spacebar for decoy
bind mouse4 for freelook
bind mouse2 for weaponswitch

bind mousewheelup for toggle first/third person
bind mousewheeldown for toggle first/third person

bind kp_4 for lean left
bind kp_6 for lean right

re-map mousewheel left tilt to kp_4
re-map mousewheel right tilt to kp_6

bind mouse1 + c to tilt forward
bind mouse2 + c to tilt backward

Easy as pie
