Framerate:
I have been running some tests, playing the map alone and seeing how things run. The framerate on fueldump is pretty bad. I have a good rig, and when playing wolfenstein assault level (notorious for its high r_speeds) I get around 150-200 fps when testing the map alone. The worst I can get on assault is around the 80 mark and thats when r_speeds exceed 20000. However, on fuel dump I average around 90 and the worst I get is around the 50 mark. I run a AMD Athlon XP 1.4GHz with 512MB DDR ram and an 8x GF4 4200. I should be getting better than that. Is this a render speeds issue or a code issue? (I can’t seem to get r_speeds to show up, it has been ‘cheat protected’ and running a non-pure server doesn’t get rounf this anymore)
Weapon Accuracy:
For a game that seems to be trying to go for a realistic approach, it seems to be a bit backward in its accuracies. The SMGs are far too accurate. even when standing they can fire accurately. However, the rifles (garand et al) have terrible accuracy. Even when prone they were as innaccurate as all hell. This is completely back to front. The rifles of the era were pretty damned accurate. The SMG is too powerful now due to it’s extreme accuracy and fire rate. I personally would suggest faster fire rate with reduced accuracy, it’s more realisitc and would, imo, balance the game better. And the rifles need improving. When prone or crouched you should be able to fire some accurate rifle shots. Fair enough if standing position has poor accuracy on rifles.
The tank mounted gun is too accurate. That thing can fire half way across the map and all the bullets land in a small circle. For a gun that is mounted on a moving, vibrating vehicle this is way off.
General:
All in all, I’m really growing to like the game. I’m completely addicted to rifle grenades. It’s just the guns don’t come across as guns. Especially with the reduced damage levels, you shouldn’t have to pump someone full of lead to drop them. Wolfy had a good balance where the spray and pray people had to get lucky and the skilled people could fire a couple to the noggin and drop the enemy instantly.
Artillery strikes - the smoke clouds dissipate a bit too quick. Half the time you don’t notice where the strike is and it’s splat city. Ok, it’s realistic, but it’s not much fun to play. Especially when you step out of the spawn building only to become pavement pate.
All the other minor gripes (sounds etc) have been thoroughly covered in other threads so they don’t need re-iteration.
All in all, good work SD boys, but needs a little refining before release. Personally, I would recommend another public beta with refined features before release. Chances are, if you respond to a lot of the feedback, then the game will become unbalanced in other ways without you realising it, so a second beta would help a lot.
