Some considerations about covert ops.

(Jahuu) #1

I always play as an axis covert op with K43. I have some miscalleneous things I’d like to ask/say:

1.About knife:
-Knife kills with 4 - 5 hits before lvl 4 cov ops (assasin).
-K43 kills with one shot if scoped and hits the head at any level.

Problem:

Now, I was sneaking behind an enemy, I was disguised and the enemy had not seen me and he was sniping and therefore still. I went behind him and thought to myself: “I must kill him!” So first I took my knife but then I remembered that it is not an instant killer (I was at lvl2). So I took my K43 scoped and aimed it to his head and fired. From less than 1 metres and I had to use the sniper rifle!

Fix:

Make knife instant killer for covops from the beginning. At lvl4 give him the gift of spying (able to read the enemy’s teamchat)

2.Map

The problem:

I was going around my home base as I was defending, a fellow with a german uniform dives up from nowhere and starts looking around, I check my map and don’t see him on it. I immideatly kill him.

The fix:

Make the spies visible for the enemy’s map for some range (50 metres for example). If he goes beyond that he will dissapear.

3.Binoculars:

-You gain binoculars when lvl1 battle sense.
-Covops have binoculars all the time

The problem:

I was gaining glory and honor as usual, defending my home country and suddendly my skills were upgraded I got the lvl1 battle sense, and what did I gain: NOTHING!!!

The fix:

Remove covops binoculars. Any player will recieve lvl1 in battle sense pretty soon so it does not hurt.

4.Disguise

The problem:

I was strolling around in my disguise, it was fine when behind enemy lines but then when I tried to get home to resupply I got killed. By the enemy - no but by my own team!

The fix:

Make it possiblle to drop the uniform without inflicting damage to the enemy.

5.Sniper rifles:

The problem:

Differences between K43 and M1 Garand:

-K43: 10 clips, reload before empty clip possible.
-M1 Garand: 8 clips, reload before empty clip impossible.

The fix:

Make M1 Garand more stable and give it the possibility to reload before empty clip.

well, your theories are interesting, but believe it or not, there are a few things that you have over-looked.

anyone (anyone) can stab someone in the back with a knife, and it’s nearly an instant kill… the bonoculars are there for spotting out mines, dont take those from covert ops, PLEASE. maybe you suggest taking field ops bonoculars away too right? – that’s just not good when you need to look for mines or something, so you switch class for a round… you wouldn’t want to have to wait until you have this battle sense (however short that may be).

being able to take off your uniform and store it in a spot for safe keeping is a good idea, but that might become a problem with someone putting a mass of clothes into a pile somewhere after they find 5 dead bodies, and would make the job of being a covert ops far too easy.

spying on others team-chat IMO is a no-no. sometimes information sent to others on a team is highly confidential… such as, if my clan are the only ones on my team, i might suggest going to a different server and giving them the info… the LAST thing i would want to do is have anyone else follow me/us to the new server, that was the point of leaving in the first place. also, once in a blue moon, a password is shared over it… spying on passwords = no no, specially if the other people aren’t very knowledgable of the game and don’t know that it’s possible that someone else could spy on that. one last flaw… the other team could just all join the same fireteam, or just use a voice chat communication program (such as what i already do), so it wouldn’t be all that helpful anyway.

one thing i have thought about though is having a level4 covert ops not recognizable by lvl4 field ops, and their name not disappear when you are close to them. this would help, and you could always tell by the type of gun they have.

I’d rather have the covert have the ability to be totally quiet when running and switching weapons at lvl4… That way, he could have a little easier time sneaking up on people and knifing em…

The teamchat thing would be kinda funny to see but yes, some information shouldn’t be transmitted… maybe this could be a server option so you knew if it were on or off. Maybe instead just be able to see the teamchat of the guy you’re disguised as.

It really would be nice to see something other than 1 shot knife kills at lvl4.

And it attacks so fast that if target is stationary, anybody can get 6 hits if he wants. Plus, if anybody stands there behind enemy with knife out and gets the grey “Stab Me” icon, you’ll do mega-damage. (Because hitboxs are completely screwed up, this might not always work)

-K43 kills with one shot if scoped and hits the head at any level.

Nope. It does 100 hitpoints, which is quite different from a kill if the target has battlesense or is a medic.

Make knife instant killer for covops from the beginning. At lvl4 give him the gift of spying (able to read the enemy’s teamchat)

That would be bad. If you want level4 to be a better gift, there are other possibilities. However note that level4 of most skills isn’t supposed to be super-powerful. Level4 heavyweap and level4 fieldops are both worse than the level1 and 2 versions of that skill.

I was going around my home base as I was defending, a fellow with a german uniform dives up from nowhere and starts looking around, I check my map and don’t see him on it. I immideatly kill him.

It is true that disguise is so easy to figure out that it’s nearly useless against a good player. Compass checking is a more minor disadvantage than name-popup, wrong weapon, or wrong-way testing.

Remove covops binoculars. Any player will recieve lvl1 in battle sense pretty soon so it does not hurt.

That would hurt the game majorly. It’s an important design principle that XP cannot be too important- lack of XP can’t stop anyone from performing all the fundamental abilities of his class (even if he has to wait for more charging time between doing them, or the total damage is reduced).

If anyone joins a game and spawns as Covert Ops, he should be able to instantly start scanning for mines. Period.

It’s hard enough to convince newbie coverts to put down their ineffective sniper rifles and check for mines a little bit… if they don’t always have the power to detect mines, it will be even more impossible to teach them. Reducing the ability to spot mines will make the game further biased towards the defending team.

I was strolling around in my disguise, it was fine when behind enemy lines but then when I tried to get home to resupply I got killed. By the enemy - no but by my own team!

The standard procedure here is to press V6 a few times before coming around the corner to your teammates. However, I feel the CovertOps class would be much more useful if they had some other way to automatically prevent getting TKed- a special marker showing up on the compass, or over his head, or something. A CovertOps running around in disguise is often not only risking his own life from TKs, but also hurting everyone on his team, making them waste ammo or reaction time. (If there are few people on the team, you can all join a fireteam, which will give you a permanent warning sign)

Make it possiblle to drop the uniform without inflicting damage to the enemy.

This is already possible. Damaging the enemy has zero relationship to losing the uniform. Shooting in view of the enemy, or shooting a non-silent weapon will take off your clothes. So just unscrew the silencer from your pistol and squeeze the trigger if you wanna get naked.

Note that firing non-silenced bullets is a common technique amoung CovertOps pointwhores. Every time your team kills an enemy, shoot a bullet to remove your disguise and then change into a new uniform. Gives you 5 XP each time, and you’re barely doing anything helpful. Or if you kill 3 enemy at once, take clothes from ALL of them for 15 XP. (This really has to be changed!!)

Make M1 Garand more stable and give it the possibility to reload before empty clip.

No, they can’t allow the garand to reload in the middle. That would be too physically weird. Historically, it took hours in a shop to reload a garand clip.

Two fixes are possible: Give you MORE clips for the garand. More starting clips, and one more clip from each ammo box. Also let it change clips faster than K43. (This might not balance it out totally, but would make the Garand not so obviously worse)

The easier fix to be assured of balancing is to give Allies a rifle weapon functionally identical to K43. Just call it the “Enfield”, not a “Garand”, and the change would be possible.

(Note that this would be more realistic, as silenced Enfields really existed. I’ve never heard of a silent garand. I think the bullets are too fast for silencers to work)

Everytime the backstab icon has come on my screen it has always either killed them instantly (and now, not level 4 covertops) and if it doesn’t kill them instantly, it will only take one more shot MAX. And you can “shoot” the knife extremely fast anyways… so if you’re behind someone with a backstab icon and can’t kill them… then… :bash:

level4 covert op reward could be moved to level1 and NO ONE would complain !

Silent movement isn’t necessarily good. It would look weird if teammate next to me produces no sound.

Ability to read enemy teamchat sounds like fun. But would it really be useful ? On pubs, you’d mostly hear Need Ammo, Need A Medic. Disarm he dynamite. Defend the objective. I’m on defense.

Clanned players are likely to use stuff like Teamspeak (teamspeak.org)- microphone communication etc.

Pointless.

I would love to see level4 covert op being able to see enemy’s health bar. It shouldn’t work on disguised enemies, however.

Another way is to make level4 useful. Make knife swings totally silent, and hits - produce “hmpf” sound, same as throwing grenade or revive.

1 or 2 hit back stab kill it dont really matter to me. I think c. ops shouldnt be able to be seen by enemies. iT’s to easy to see the flashing name.
make poeple look if your on the map. much better idea.

(k1ll3r) #8

I think they should make MP40 and Thompson different again. Right now the only difference are the sounds and the model… MP40 should get it’s ROF faster and be more accurate in long range. Thompson should fire slower than MP40 and do more damage while being a bit more innacurate at long range. That would make using each weapon a different experience. Now don’t tell me they should be equal, each weapon has its strengths and its weaknesses… plus in ET you can pick any SMG if you can use it… so if you’re not happy with A you pick B. Personally i’m a mp40 fan (on rtcw) because i enjoy long-range shooting, but as most of us know there were some really good players who were thompson addicted. As there were great players mp40 addicted. I think the way they are now (equal) is not right…

([B]Visa) #9

Well the reason I’d like to be totally silent is so I could sneak around and behind enemies and be able to switch weapons (sten to knife, etc.) without him hearing somethin funny goin on behind him…

This might encourage the coverts to do basically what they’re supposed to do, get behind enemy lines and cause some chaos

You could even set it up so that while you’re holding the walk key everything you do is silent. Your speed is not reduced, you just run quietly. Switching weapons or stabbing with the knife would make no sound. That way if you’re running with a group of bad guys undercover you’re not totally obvious, but when you want to sneak behind a lone defender he doesn’t hear you coming.
