It’d be cool to have an UPS meter in game so we can measure efficiency and speed gains with SMART vs manual (horizontal axis only of course so we’re just measuring forward momentum).
some cam footage from the brink booth
Do we have any confirmation yet that there are hitsounds (I hope so)?
And I’m going to sneak in my request from a few months back that custom hitsounds can be made available
I too didn’t like the new UI that much, and so decided to mock up something:
In the E3 video I’m pretty sure the circle on the bottom left is used to indicate what buttons on the d-pad do what action, which IMHO is a bit unnecessary.
Up always brings up the objective select screen, and I think the other keys activate perks or quick access to grenades. These should really be assigned during the customisation bit of the game or just set as standard controls, rather than just adding extra UI information to the player (which he/she doesn’t really need). Plus, in the current E3 version, it makes it look different from console to PC.
I haven’t really added the gun ammo amount/cooldown indicator to this mockup, but yeah, I was thinking it should probably only pop up when the gun is being fired anyway. Most gamers get used to their gun and know how long it takes to empty a clip anyway. If you’re walking around half the map with a gun with a single bullet in it, you’re just dumb for not making sure you’ve reloaded.
Maybe SD can gleam some ideas and/or help with pointing out what other members were after? -shrug-
Certainly was a good way to procrastinate, anyway!
I certainly like the hit indicators on your screen.

Some games let their guns make ‘rattling’ sounds when the clip is about to expire it’s ammo.
I think they do but SD is obviously aiming towards a certain market with Brink, if they decide not to act on community feedback then its because it probably goes against their vision of what they want Brink to be.
As consumers we have a choice, you dont like what they make you can vote with your wallet as the saying goes.

You guys always put so much pressure/blame on SD, like Bethesda has no say in what goes on…
Yea, I know, the thing is I have never been so hyped so much for a game (more than even Half Life 2, I guess) and I am totally sick of this generation’s mp games. Its not like I’ll buy this game if its good or otherwise just write it off, I want this game to be good.
Anyway, SD should realize that pc gamers aren’t the same as console gamers, only liking a game if they’re spoon-fed everything.

I suppose it depends on what you think is good but as you said your sick of the current MP games then I suspect you might be disapointed.
SD have always made their own games and that is evident with Wolfenstein enemy territory and Quake wars both good games because they were unique.
Now it seems they are tapping into a new market, what they are doing is combining the current MP games features all together and trying to make a super game, so there is nothing really new apart from the SMART system which is debatable as you have always been able to trickjump in SD games, the SMART system makes it more accessable thats all. Xp trailing after a hit or kill etc is just like COD.
The danger is they are trying to do to much at once, hence my previous comment “is Brink an FPS an MMO or an RPG.” You may find there is no specific target audience.
SD needed to get the balance right to keep their existing fans and to get new ones, sadly it seems that the balance is all off 70/30 so in favour of casuals and console players.
I think the game can be pretty hardcore if treated as such, but I have to admit that I’m terrified tiny little things might ruin it.
It’s quite funny you have zero problems with the gameplay implications that bolting RPG and XP onto an FPS causes and it’s blatant similarity to the CoD games but shiver with fear if a HUD isn’t to your liking.
I believe SD are going for a HUD that gives a large amount of visual feedback with a minimal amount of text or any graphical information for that matter. Remember some of this stuff is going to be read off of TVs many feet away. Even XP petals might not be readable from afar but are still a visual indicator of your success of failure to hit someone.

Well having separate HUD’s for both PC and console isn’t that far fetched. Do I think Brink will have it, probably not, but it something that has been done in the past - Mass Effect is a good example.
As for the whole, combining everything and not really offering anything new - this is where marketing, and lack of info (on the consumer’s part) favors SD. True, SD has made unique games and Brink follows the same basic formula, but ET and QW are PC hits, so whereas the PC community is kinda like “been there, done that,” with Brink, the console community eats that **** up, because a vast majority of them have never played a “proper” team objective as deep as SD-style games - it’s a totally new experience to them.
On the same note, a lot of them see it and say, “it’s not Halo or COD” and just turn the other way.
True but if the HUD works on the whole why spend time replacing it*. Just because I use a PC and sit inches from my monitor doesn’t mean I want a HUD flooded with text. I’m happy to settle for anything that allows me to absorb information quickly and intuitively.
*I recognise that stuff like higher resolution and viewer distance do need to be tweaked. I’m talking more generally about the design as a whole.

I’m not saying that the HUD doesn’t work or it needs to change, I was just implying that if need be, having different HUD’s seems feasible.
That’s basically what I am thinking.
Though I don’t know much about game development but seeing that the PC version it should be possible to change/remove features (hud, visual cues, xp popping) that could be problematic for pc gaming.
We totally need a PC Mod with a HUD which is not an insult to the user’s intelligence. It’s obvious to the point of being tasteless. I’m talking about things like mission selection wheel - it not just obscures the screen, it looks like it’s about to leap out of your monitor.
besides the fact that there are miles between the design in an alpha and the final design, i’d like to ask: how would you represent the mission selection then, so that it’s not your mentioned “insult to the user’s intelligence”? and please base your reply on the fact that there are users who have no idea that there’s mission selection at all, ie don’t start your reply with keyboard shortcuts

I too thought that the objective wheel was obstructive but it doesn’t really pause the game, you can view whats going on behind it plus you can just select the most appropriate mission for yourself just by pressing the button once.
In my opinion all they need to do is make the wheel a bit more transparent, that’s all.
