some cam footage from the brink booth

SD should record an in house? Maybe do a live cast?

(Seyu) #22

Hate the xp pop-ups and the red around enemy players.

(LyndonL) #23

I must be the only one on this forum that likes the XP pop ups… lets you know how effective your attacking is. It’s one of the things I like about Borderlands.

I am a fan of hit sounds, but actually seeing something on the screen when you hit an enemy, seems to be more effective than just a sound.

(Seyu) #25

I think having the crosshair change like in Bad Company 2 would be much better, no?

(LyndonL) #26

No.

The reticle changing only lets you know that it was lined up, not that it hit.

Oh yeah, the bullet actually travels the path to the target unlike that in MW2 and Brink.

I’d say that going with hit sounds will probably be the best.

(murka) #28

And etqw had red/green marker around crosshair to indicate hit… [strike]oh wai, this is not etqw.[/strike]
Huge text filling the screen will surely help your aim.

(abrain) #29

Maybe there is a option to turn in off in the settings?

Yes, totally massive and takes FOREVER to fade away… no idea how we’ll cope!

i’m basing my opinion on how fast the playermodels the player sees are. and unless none of them is a skinny and the non-sprinting speed of a skinny is something like 1.5x faster than the faster of the two enemies @6:40 (who look like skinnies to me), it is too slow in my opinion. what look like heavy and medium types in the footage move a lot too slowly without question unless none of them runs at all which would be weird considering the animations.

of course i’m being selfish here, and my wish is that the movement speed of the medium bodytype is exactly the same as the movement speed is in ET, and that the skinny is quite a bit faster and the heavy is slightly slower. this is based on the fact that you can’t shoot while sprinting and the fact that people who don’t have any stamina left in a firefight in ET are pretty easy to hit, and that the thing that basically makes fights interesting (there are some things that add to it but this is the major thing) in ET is the variable speed allowed by sprint and the fact that people can shoot but are slightly less accurate while doing it.

and of course i don’t get to make any decisions so my only option is to write a few words on their forum and hope someone there listens or agrees. there is no way SD is going to release a game that has a too fast pace, but with the money being on consoles, there is a very good chance they release a game that experienced PC players find too slow.(as in experienced with the fast paced games of the past, ET is something you could call fast paced but it’s at the slower end of the spectrum)

basically, i want to feel at home as a medium bodytype, choose a skinny if i want to feel like a ninja, and choose a heavy if i want to feel like a beefcake.

I guess visible hit indicators make sense for consoles as you might not hear it as well sitting on a sofa. But then, I’ll play with a headset and hitsounds are the least distracting way of telling you how good you hit. They have added hit indicators in QL as well and they are great for streamed matches but completely redundant when you are playing on your own.

I really hope it’s not one of the things that gets left out because of Brink being a modern multiplatform shooter.

(Seyu) #33

Another thing I really don’t like is (1)the red color of the hue and names of the opposing factions which makes the different customization for the two factions redundant.
(2) The character health bar, there are plenty of other ways of conveying info on health and the faction of the players without painting them red and putting a bar over their heads.

Making these changes wouldn’t necessarily “improve” the gameplay but still I think they should be worked upon for improving the games aesthetic value.

Edit: Fail grammar is fail

(light_sh4v0r) #34

ETQW was fine for me, different hitsounds for different bodyparts and a small reticle dot in the color of the team you hit.

(DarkangelUK) #35

The whole reason for the outlines was probably due to feedback on here from people saying they couldn’t tell the difference between enemies and team mates… either way someone will be upset regardless of what they do, and i’d rather they cater for gameplay than visual aesthetics.

Care to name a few ways of doing this to throw some ideas into the mix?

From what I saw it looked to be appropriately paced. Around 7 mins the dude who runs up the stairs and in front of the player… that looked no slower than most FPS I can think of. It’s a lot slower than ETQW (and Valve games) but compared to everything else on the market at the moment it seems equally paced if not slightly faster than some. (Watch the external characters movements to judge a realistic measure of speed)
MW2: From Around 2 mins - Same or slower
L4D2 - Faster
Bad Company 2 - Similar speeds
TF2 - Much faster
ETQW - must faster
Killing Floor - Same or slower
Borderlands - Same or slower

You’ll notice that a lot of the vids give the perception of being faster because a) they’re all running most of the way though compared to Brink where ppl seem to be walking most of the time b) they’re being played with a mouse, and can therefore pivot a lot quicker!

I’m hoping that it’s nice and quick too, but anyway if it isn’t we can always find the silver lining in that it will help define the importance of being a good shot. If you can’t run away/dodge as easily, the onus is heavily on your ability to aim well.

(Seyu) #37

Hehe, we need an official poll or something. Anyway, if they were gonna paint the other faction red they could as well have kept a single set of customizable clothes and added the female gender instead.

I would say that these can actually effect gameplay in a drastic manner.
The red coloring would eliminate the stealth element from the game which in my opinion is essential for the light build given their low health.
In case of the health bar, say a heavy’s health is near to zero, he’d have to retreat or else be shot at by everyone of the other faction while without a health bar over his head (and thus the other faction having no info about his condition), players with a light/medium build would rather avoid a direct confrontation with him. I am not saying the addition of make the gameplay worse but it would remove depth.

Having the crosshair change color when its pointing to a player is decent enough.

While I don’t think there is any need to tell a player how much xp he’s accumulating while shooting at someone, the devs could just a xp meter to the hud.

As for a player’s health, it could be attached to the crosshair similar to what the engineer views the health of a vehicle in Bad Company 2, if displaying is a must.

Kinda hap-hazard and all, hopefully I got my point across.

I just hope (and coming from SD I think I wont be wrong) that you will be able to modify such stuffs, as XP showing or not, draw weapon or not etc etc, as long as its not considered an unfair advantage they allways made some nice visualisations options.

And yeah this xp stuff is pretty weird, thought the guy was playing battlefield heroes  /troll

The point which I’ll die with IMO is that it really looked (again) uber slow to me, but well, its been what… 6 monthes that I tell that and people kept telling me that I was a mongoloid so… We’ll see when its out, just dont come to cry after the release, I’ll be there to collect your tears and drink them all yelling “YUMMY YUMMY”

Peace

The current system really compromises the gameplay. I don’t want to see xp flying on my screen or on my opponent’s screen.

(mortis) #40

Those XP popups will be the first thing I turn off…
