So... is this cheater thing somewhat overblown?

(moonlitAbility) #1

So, both in game and on the forums I see constant accusations of hackers or cheaters going around. But Im genuinely curious how much of this is real, and how much of it is just butthurt people crying.

For instance, in well over 200 hours of gametime now, I’ve seen exactly 1 instance where there was a definate cheater (an aura on my team that spawn camped the enemy 8 person team by herself with no heal station and finished 63/2). Every other case ive watched closely and have simply seen a solid player thats good at aiming and experienced with the game.

Ive played a good amount of all modes at this point. so what says you? is the cheating as bad as people say? how do people know for sure when they are facing a ‘cheater’?

(Backuplight) #2

The majority of cheaters are in competitive, not casual, from what I understand. My experience is much the same as yours otherwise, 200hrs+ and only one or two actual aimbots used in casual mode. Dozens of other hackusations of players who are just good, though, or people who don’t understand game mechanics calling hacks.

One big thing though, people will post when there are people cheating in their game, but nobody comes to post saying “I played a game today, there were no cheaters and we all had a lovely time” - so it’s not that easy to really gauge how overblown it is. In publics, it’s fine, in comp (apparently) it’s not great.

(Edzer) #3

It is only as bad as people say in competitive. As long as you’re not playing competitive chances are VERY LOW you will ever run into a hacker.

(moonlitAbility) #4

So, out of curiosity, is there an advantage to doing it in competitive at the moment? is it actually ranking us in any way right now?

(Yak) #5

People are penalized for leaving a competitive game, so they’re basically stuck with the hacker for the match, unlike in pubs where you can leave with impunity.

(SteelMailbox) #6

OK so I don’t know if that’s the problem but I see a lot of people accusing from their perspective and never actually go to spectate and spectate him. I guess people don’t know that’s an option or something but i’m pretty sure you cant do that in comp. Just saying though spectate guys that are suspected cheaters before accusing.

(moonlitAbility) #7

that is what I’m saying. theres a LOT going on in this game, and it takes a lot of experience to recognize a lot of it. death is around every corner, and headshots are especially deadly… watching accused cheaters actually helped me up my game.

Comp does have ranks right now. Not sure how cheating your way up the ranks ahead of the inevitable ban wave is fun for people, but to each their own.

(PurpleNurple) #9

It’s never as bad as people say. There’s always those couple of kids who think they need to populate the forums with hackusations because their ego can’t handle losing to someone on a completely different level than them.

A fair bit is overblown in my experience. Personaly I have encountered 4 obvious cheaters, maybe the same ammount that I found suspicious but turned out to be just good players (and me having a bad day). But I encountered propably 10-50 times the amount of accusations.

Haven’t encountered a single cheater in competition so far to be honest, could be my low rank / amount of matches (averaging 1-2 per day) tho.

As far as the usefulness of cheating in comp mode goes.
Well it ranks your skill (after 10 matches) and from that point tries to match you with players of the same rank.
Cheating would obviously net you a higher rank, you could brag about online / friends but imo would always have the bitter aftertaste of not having achieved that rank on your own. Another side effect is that it puts you into matches you can’t compete on your own (damning you to keep on cheating less you wanna loose the rank) and against players that know their shit and will get you banned pretty quickly.

To be honest compmode has bigger problems than cheaters, namely low playerbase which hurts the system quite a bit and creates unbalanced matches, pitching higher skilled players against weaker ones, who might mistake the highlvl. players as cheaters aswell.

its got very hard to be sure. ive seen 5 that i would be willing to risk my testicles on, if you look down the list of bot options and see all the things it can do it becomes clear that only the real idiots that want to get caught run around instant head shotting everyone. them you can spot and like i say ive seen 5.

but what if hes just running wall hack and a minor trigger bot and some of the esp functions like wall hack and you can be seen beeps lines to targets with los?

what if hes set the firing angle to just 10 degrees and the bone to chest hes not going to snap to target like a bot its going to look like hes aiming but the fine degree and the way he sticks to you will be the only ques, and this is a game with no recoil or spread in any meaningful amount so how to be sure?

the yard stick ive taken to using is to watch pro gamers play how fast they track how accurate they are etc. then whenever you find someone that makes them look like a noob you got to be suspicious.

and heres the problem you just cant tell a well set up bot by watching so you never know.

If SD come out an say they have been tracking the bots from some foolproof method and have caught them all that number could be anywhere from 0.01% and 25% and i would believe it.

Mainly the pubs are hacker free but competitve is infested with them.

(Ghosthree3) #13

You only ever hear about problems. If everyone who didn’t see a hacker posted about it you’d never find a hacker thread among the mess.

(god1) #14

Personally I have seen an increase in the number of cheaters in public servers as of late but those people have been pretty subtle about it.

(KNECKT) #15

met one in pubs 30 mins ago

(Jurmabones) #16

I’d say competitive has a pretty obvious hacker problem. They show up now and then in pubs too, but some people just get huge scores from crushing noobs in pubs, not hacking. (Badger_Commander) #17

I’ve only seen two confirmed ones but I don’t play competitive very often.

Hacking sucks but I think it creates a larger problem that because we all know it happens there’s always an uncertainty and you get constant accusations flying around which pretty toxic for the community.

(avidCow) #18

I don’t know how people manage to avoid them so often. I see a few every week in AUS pubs, and many are very blatant and unrepentant and their team usually stays silent.

This is what I believe too.
It’s not the cheaters themselves that make the problem (though they really are a nuisance that we need to solve) but it’s the suspicion that’s created regarding who’s a really good player and who is a cheater and that’s going to be a bigger problem in the long run.

It’s a bit overblown, but for good reason I’d say.

The only problem with spectating someone right now is that if you use a different resolution than the person your spectating, it doesnt even look like the aim is anywhere near correct or close too what the actual player is doing making it even “seem” like something is up.
