so i'm worried about my aging cpu and quakewars.

(Waaaggh) #1

today i tried playing medieval 2’s demo and couldn’t because the game requires a cpu which supports SSE2 which my barton doesn’t support. first thing i thought of was quakewars which will be out even later than medieval… am i screwed?

anyone can say for sure if quakewars will be all right with just SSE?

I’m not sure about the specifics, but it has been mentioned that if you can play Doom and Quake 4, you should be able to play QW. Take it with a grain of salt, however, since specs haven’t been released.

(=PoW= Kernel 2.6.5) #3

I’m running Athlon XP3200 (Barton) and Nvidia 6800GS and I can PLAY Quake 4.
The auto-detect only sets me at low quality.

I noticed I can run high quality settings and do single player fairly well but I have to set it to low quality to play online.

Hope that info helps.

i’m actaully worried about the support, frame rates don’t bother me as much as actaully being able to run it.

I have a P4 2.4GHz Prescott and I bet Quake Wars won’t run very well on it, although I can play Doom 3 at near high settings with only an occasional stutter.

It’s a hard time to upgrade, with Vista, DX10, and the new generation of video cards around the corner. I priced a nice E6400 dual core and a mobo at NewEgg the other day for around $320 which isn’t too bad assuming you have the other hardware to complete a new PC with. I’m near to my time of getting a new PC, and expect to put out between $500-$1000 for a new system before Quake Wars comes out. Thats just mobo, cpu, mem, hdd, and probably a new psu.

lol

I bet if your comp runs d3 or q4 pretty well, then ET:QW will run just fine.

(nappy) #8

I’m more interested in the how much the server daemon will tax my box (relative to et).

(Nail) #9

you can go here and check specs for D3, if you can run it, you should be able to run at least at low end

lets just say, my old celery 1.7 mx2 failed in almost every way

passes were: O/S, sound card, and directx

Regarding the Medieval 2: Total War demo:

The demo that has just appeared on many major games sites is the exact same ‘demo’ that somehow appeared (leaked?) on torrent sites a few months back. There has been no official word from Creative Assembly (the devs) in the Total War forums, or on the main news pages, regarding the ‘demo’ being released.

I don’t believe that the final version of Medieval 2: Total War will require a processor that supports SSE2. This would eliminate Athlon XP’s, Duron’s, Sempron’s + others (I saw a list of CPUs and it was quite large). Also, there is no mention of needing SSE2 in the official requirements announcement.

send me the money and i’ll be happy to.

i can barely make ends meet, specially now that winter is around the corner and i’ll be shelling out 100 dollars every month for heat.
