So I played dirty bomb for 25 minutes and got 150 credits.

(insaneCylinder) #1

Since a character is 30,000 credits it would take me, excluding missions and level up bonuses, 1375 hours to buy one character.

Now I realize that this time will be severely cut down by bonuses for leveling up and completing missions. Unfortunately I did not either level up or complete any missions during this match that I played and received 150 credits for my effort.

Now I like this game and I enjoy playing it. But in 1375 hours I can probably make more real money playing TF2 than what it would cost to buy all the dirty bomb characters.

Subsequently it feels like this game is ripping me off and it is putting me off playing the game at all.

(Hipolipolopigus) #2

From today’s missions alone, I can get 1800 credits; 600 each. Factoring in the credits from a few matches to meet the requirements of these each day, it’d only take a few days playing those few matches a day to get a new merc.

So no, the game isn’t ripping you off. You simply do not understand the game mechanics.

Edit: One full Stopwatch match gave me 12000 credits. Well damn.

(Sumoses) #3

Player 30mins and got 12k
I think certain lvls will give you bonus credits

(Amerika) #4

The early levels give you bonus credits. It’s a way to get you some good stuff quickly when you start out but it tapers off. I went ahead and threw $20 at the game and unlocked all the mercs with the merc starter pack (and you get 30k credits too) because I want to support the developers.

“YOU FEEL DIFFERENTLY THAN ME, YOU SIMPLY DON’T UNDERSTAND THE MECHANICS”

How patronizing. Yes, you can unlock a new character after 16 straight days of doing literally every single mission. Probably a bit less when you factor in the credits you’ll earn playing all those games. So two weeks. One of today’s missions is two win four Obj games. One can assume that trend will continue. So expect to play at least four games, every day, for two weeks straight, to unlock ONE new character.

Let’s say each game lasts 10 minutes, which has been my average experience. That’s 40 minutes every day, assuming you win every game, but let’s round it to 60 assuming you’re not going to do that. That’s at least an hour a day, every day, for a week, only playing the characters and game modes that the missions specify each day. And who says the character missions will always be one of the free characters? Who says the game won’t charge you with the much harder task of earning 14,000 Support XP rather than Combat XP?

OP understands the mechanics. The game just doesn’t output value often enough proportional to how fun it is to play for OP (and for me as well, and I imagine many other people too). And I’m pretty sure that 12k credits was a one-time bonus we all got. I received 85 credits just now for decisively winning an Obj match. There’s no way I stick with this game if that’s how painfully slow it is going to be to rank up. Dirty Bomb is just another game that discourages experimentation. Wait or pay up. Boring. I have no doubts this game doesn’t last long with this business model. Sure, people will still be playing it in small numbers a while from now, but hey - people are still playing Blacklight Retribution, too.

Players should never be this profoundly distant from unlocking something, anything permanent that they have to show for their time played.

(evuze) #6

In Cod it takes ages to unlock stuff, in Destiny/MMOS you raid once a week for a chance to get something. It’s nothing new. If you got them all super quick there’d be no pay model. I don’t see much wrong tbh.

And from a couple of hours playing I got 29K. I like the fact you get more doing obj, encourages proper play.

Besides, they semi unlock two mercs for you.

(Hipolipolopigus) #7

Gave you a lol, that was a good rant. Now calm down.

It’s not hard to earn credits. Complete dailies? 1800. Level? 12000. Just because it’s not “HURR I CAN UNLOCK EVERYTHING IN A WEEK”, doesn’t mean that it’s unfair. Spend your credits wisely. Use the free rotation to learn who you play well with, then buy them. Three levels will get you at least one merc, and then you have the dailies on top of that.

If you expect things to be spoonfed to you, perhaps you might be better suited to another game.

(cunningHumdinger) #8

came here because i loved WolfET, if it ends in another f2p hardcore grind then i’m probably out really fast. as i am already playing HotS and WT

and how the F*** do i change my nickname?

(RuleofBooKz) #9

150 credits? you lucky bastard. we had to work down a mine and all we got was a crust of stale bread and a spot to curl up and sleep before our next shift. 150 credits?? paaah

(Tomme) #10

I have doubled my credits to 60K in one evening, though is mostly down to ranking up pretty quickly. The credit rewards for the missions might need to scale up a bit (we will have to see, to hard to judge at the minute) but otherwise I think it is fine. Play the objective and you will get more credits

(DB Genome editor) #11

Earning your first 30K is pretty easy because there are levels (I think it’s 2 and 4 but could be wrong) that give you like 12 or 12.5K when you reach them. However, levels start to be spaced out much more steeply after that and you’ll get to a point were these bonuses will be very rare.

I think a better balance between leveling up bonuses, mission rewards and gameplay credits would be in order, hitting an arbitrary XP total should not give you 100x more credits than playing a decent match. Also compare that to levels that give you a case for leveling up, a value of a whooping 1K credits…

@Hipolipolopigus

Alright so after playing for another several hours I am ready to come back and further support the argument I initially made.

You get 12k at level 2 and level 4, then it dries up. That together with 2 days worth of dailies and the few credits you get from matches will allow you to buy one merc after 2-3 days of playing.

After this your leveling will be pathetically slow and the dailies are only enough for <2 crates. After you have completed the dailies there is no reason to keep playing, sure I might like the game enough that I want to play a couple of more matches, but the lack of reward desensitizes you from playing by quite a lot.

Now I got Vassili as my obsidian loot card. I don’t particularly fancy playing a sniper but I would be willing to go for him as my second merc.

With the dailies and with the little reward I get from matches, I have figured out it is going to take me maybe 12 days of completing ALL the dailies to get him, but only if I am very conservative with my spending, no loot crates and no upgrades.

Well, that sucks, because I main sawbonez and I want to get a decent loot card with him, well with all the costs of loot crates (and yes I know you can get the from matches) and the upgrades that could easily put me behind for as long as a week! Suddenly it is going to take me nearly a month just to get my primary merc and a second one on the go.
Keep in mind also that this requires me to complete all daily mission every day and if I get unlucky with objectives such as support XP 14k it’s going to take me maybe 2 hours a day!

(fubar) #13

150? :frowning: I tend to get in the 60s to 70s on SW servers… Luckily enough I didn’t have to go through the trouble of unlocking mercs, blew it all on cases and trade ups instead. Still way too much of a grind imo.

(RuleofBooKz) #14

in the past we played games - just because it was fun to play them. There wasn’t even hats!

tho admittedly when u started the game u had all the content right there to pick and choose from. Almost nothing to unlock except by skill in the game.

once you bring unlockables to the table, and make them unreachable as they are now it brings a lot of frustration and sense of hopelessness.

(Shackahn) #16

What I wouldnt give for the crust of stale bread. I had to sleep in a rolled up newspaper just to stay warm.

Back on topic though, if they dont make some changes to the credit rate or cost of mercs soon then it will drive people away, even at this early stage.

(artfulSedan) #17

either give mroe credits per match or decrease the merc costs. Increase the loadout crates if you want. I can buy 30 loadout crates for the cost of one merc.
The mercs should be the thing you get for ‘free’ (or cheap) and the good loadout cards (make a bronze or gold crate that costs extra money or can be bought via cash) are the oney you either have to work for or pay for. That is a normal working F2P system. You get the base game for free if you want some individual stuff you have to either pay for or grind.
as long as you keep the cards balanced and aviable for ingame money too (for a high price) it isn’t p2w.
It’s not that i don’t want to pay money for this game i really want to because i like it and i want to support you. But simply wont buy timesaver packs! Seriously i would buy things like Loadout cases that gurantee cards for a class or soemthing. Or cosmetic items (hell yeah) maybe things that’ll change how my support items looks but not timesaver packs.

(solt.) #18

All this back and forth is well and good but:

(Buttback) #19

I don’t think the 12k is locked to levels. For example, I only got it once (level 6 now) and I saw other people complaining about a ‘random jackpot’ after matches.

This makes me believe it’s completely random.

(humaneBerry) #20

I had a fun game today. Played a game of stopwatch on chapel and we won. Now i wont say i did great, infact, i did quite poorly but i recieved a grand total of 8 credits. I was very surprised about that.
