sniper rifles damage

how come the sniper rifles are soo weak in ET?

I don’t know the exact amount, but often sniper kills are from having to shoot someone about 4 times (even when aiming at the head). …so that person has to be “dumb” enough to stay still for the time it takes to be shot 4 times.

Another problem with it being so weak is that it’s coupled with a slow fire rate, and ET is very “quake” speedy in the players running, so it’s very hard to trace a target and shoot with the very ‘sharp’ movement changes when strafing.

Maybe I’ve played DoD too much where the sniper is 1 shot 1 kill. But using the example above, it’s still requires skill to trace someone running and straffing, though in DoD they’re slower. It is kinda “traditional” to have the snipers a 1 shot 1 kill thing. And I know ET isn’t meant to be realistic at all, so maybe make it like the railgun in Q3… but it’s just not fun to be a sniper, because u get to a good spot, find a good target… and he runs away after realising he’s been hit a few times.

I guess what I’m saying is… will this ever be reviewed and maybe changed in a patch?

Sniper rifles have a slow firing rate? If you haven’t noticed, the weapon is SEMI AUTOMATIC. You can fire off bullets as fast as you can click your mouse.

A bullet in sniper mode does 50 damage to the body, and 100 damage to the head. Ignores helmet.
Base unit has 100 HP
Medics get 125HP
Base + 3 medics on team has 125 HP
A medic with at least 2 other medics on the team has 140HP.
A person with level 3 battle sense gets 15HP added to their max. (but don’t spawn with the 15HP bonus)

if it takes you 4 bullets to kill someone, you’re obviously missing your shots. sniping is not the point of this game and is not the dominant weapon. And not just any idiot can use the sniper rifle and rack up tonnes of kills. If you ever see a good sniper in ET, you know they’re GOOD, cuz it takes real skill to be a good sniper in ET. Can’t just be some n00b who saves money for 5 rounds, buys an AWP, and then gets lots of camp kills.

I like the sniping system in ET cuz in most FPS games, the only counter you have for an enemy sniper, is an equally good sniper on your own team. For once, an FPS game does it right, sniping is for SUPPORT, not for top fragger.

…well, “right” being a matter of opinion.

I was going to mention in the first post, that the sniper rifle is more a support weapon… as it seems you just annoy an enemy trying to position an air raid or arm a mine and can’t effectively take down opponants.

So it is still 3 body shots or 2 head shots.

Ah well different game… guess i like it when there’s a sniper class with 1 hit 1 kill weapon.

I’ve posted on a thread on this topic before.

Gotta say tho, that if you are playing against at least decent ppl, the sniper rifle is a redundant feature because you only need one medic on the opposing team to deny you getting a one shot kill.

With regard to it being a support feature rather than a top fragger feature, that certainly is a matter of opinion although it doesn’t really matter…tbh it’s that useless in ET that if you are gonna support you are far more effective being a med with an SMG than a poor covert with a poor weapon.

Imo, it shouldn’t be a one shot kill, that’s too easy, it should be a one headshot kill

I think that’s what people refer to when saying a one shot kill

I have seen effective snipers, but they are very far and few.

I remember I had to keep constant artillery on the sniper hill in Fuel Dump, cuz some Allied sniper was really giving my team (Axis) a hard time. He did end up being top fragger with like 40 Garand kills, 5 grenade kils, and 10 Thompson kills.

If you want to be a good sniper, you hafta let the bullets fly fast and furious. This guy was good cuz right when I was in his vision, he gave me a headshot and like fired another bullet into my body like half a second later to kill me. As I said, Sniper Rifles in this game are semi-automatic. If you want to be effective with them, you gotta let the bullets fly fast and furious.

you won’t kill jack if you take your sweet ass time taking your shots.

Personally I like the relatively weak snipers in ET but, of course, it is a matter of taste. This article http://www.firingsquad.com/features/jakub_rant_sniper/ was linked through /. a while back. It is, as the title suggests, a bit of rant but does include the interesting observation

There are two and only two popular games that have done sniping correctly. The first is Enemy Territory.

Snipers can become almost completly useless in clanwars. Besides, Cv ops online need to stop sniping and start to open some god damn doors.

IMO, the people you see who are effectives snipers would, 90% of the time, be even more effective if they were a medic with an SMG. In ET, a medic with a couple of ammo packs is a quite effective counter sniper… pop out, shoot, hide and heal as soon as you are hit, repeat. Use lean+binocs to spot. Unless the sniper has a med backing him up, he is going to be out of the picture pretty quickly. There are some situations where a sniper can be useful, but they are quite rare.

If the sniper cannot get more kills than an SMG gunner, then what is the point of being a sniper ? While the covert has other useful abilities, the only one which is compatible with sniping is mine spotting, and even that usually requires getting close to the objective.

You doesnt see so many good snipers because they (we?) are oftenly medics, field ops or something else.

If youre good with the smg youre a good sniper, I promise.

want good sniper rifles?

go play rtcw

and yes the sniper rifle on ET is a toy gun (don’t believe me? go play rtcw or watch some rtcw demos from good teams on assault)

top fragger weapon? please don’t compare this to CS…

having the good’ol mauser back would bring the covert ops class a bit more respect imho… right now in clan wars it’s pretty useless…

well… in public servers… if you like water pistols… have fun then

imho

Why would ET, an objective-based and team-based FPS game, need a decent sniper rifle? That defeats the whole purpose of the game. If the covert ops had a managable and powerful sniper weapon you’d see all the noobies in ET running around with sniper weapons. The point is not to emphasize just fragging, but objectives too (although that message doesn’t seem to get across to everyone…).

The reason that the soldier had the sniper weapon in RtCW was that the soldier was not absolutely vital to the objective (well, except the CP ones), therefore not many people would play soldier anyway so it was ok for him to have such a strong sniper weapon. Then again, maybe I’m spewing a bunch of BS, hehe. It happens.
