Smooth SMART?

(longbow) #1

While watching Brink’s latest hands-on video http://www.gametrailers.com/game/brink/11373 I noticed that when the player “Jolly” goes to use the SMART system to get over a wall (around 2:40-2:45) getting over the wall does not seem like a very smooth action. Instead of seamlessly getting up and over the wall “Jolly” seems to run up to the box, stop, climb on to it, run up to the wall, stop and then climb over that.

Now I don’t know if this is because of the body type being played (we never learn that bit of information and i assume it’s medium) or if it’s because this is still an alpha version, or if this is simply designed in to make mastering SMART manually more lucrative, however it seems like since SD has emphasized the smoothness of getting around using SMART the climbing and vaults should be, well, smoother.

Thoughts? Rationalizations? Possible explanations?

It’s the disadvantage to just holding down the SMART button. If you want smoother transitions, do things manually.

as i said on bethsoft, it could be because he hadn’t picked up speed when he started climbing over.
in previous vids the player went back a bit to have a running start, and it seemed to be a lot smoother then

Oh MAN no wonder I’ve been confused about people talking about all this. I downloaded the WMV instead, and the download failed halfway through. The video clips off just as he breaks off to “show off with the wall”.

I’ll redownload it and have a look…

Be nice to see video of someone doing manual moves then.

I don’t know why Bethesda are so reluctant to show footage, prefably on the PC with keyboard and mouse, with a player who knows how to play the game effectively against opponents who also know how to play the game.

I would rather see things such as faster smart movements done manually in action rather than just take their word for it. Hopefully folk attending that eurogamer event this weekend can provide some clarity on these topics of debate and tell us how the game really is at this stage of development.

True, its also harder to be smooth with no momentum.:stroggtapir:

I’m completely with Chris here, it makes no sense to me all videos released so far have been played on an inferior controller by people who had no clue. That’s not marketing

(tokamak) #8

Yeah I don’t see the point either.

(H0RSE) #9

But those are the majority of the targeted audience. I’m a PC gamer at heart, and will always know that it is the superior platform, but console and its players, is where the money is.

(.Chris.) #10

Thing is though, it doesn’t look convincing as console game either.

(tokamak) #11

Even it was up to console standards, showing it on a PC should still show the game in a better light to all gamers, including the consolers. Kinda false advertising, but still.

(H0RSE) #12

the game overall, looks fine to me. It doesn’t seem slow, it doesn’t seem like to many bullets to kill, the objective wheel seems to work fine, etc. One minor thing that bothers me is the gun animation when walking/sprinting. It looks like he’s treading water or in zero gravity.

Many of the complaints I see, seem baseless, for the fact that Brink doesn’t have a “Standard” setting, like W:ET or QW, meaning everyone doesn’t have the same stats - the players don’t all move at the same speed and with the ability system, there’s no solid way of knowing if a potential “problem” could be solved by equipping a perk.

(Icemonkeyjr) #13

Smart does look abit clunky at the mo but they’ve got jsut under half a year to fix things, also i think it probbly was because of the player having no momentum. it was the same in mirrors edge.

(tokamak) #14

The game looks clunky in this video. And it’s impossible to tell whether that’s due to the player, the gamepad, the lack of polish or simply intended, on top of that the video is rendered poorly. Simply said, it’s not good advertising.

(H0RSE) #15

But I don’t think it’s actual, Bethesda funded advertising - It’s just something Gametrialers did on their own. If you look at the Brink vid list on the site, it even says “original” across the PAX walkthrough.

(Cankor) #16

It’s good to see that most people seem to understand that lots of the things they are seeing that are bothersome have potential explanations. In the case of this issue with the time it took to climb, it’s almost assuredly because he didn’t run up to it and jump before he reached it to maintain his momentum. Also, we have to asume a light guy would have gone up faster as well.

(tokamak) #17

These are the videos that Bethesda allows to be broadcasted. These are the only videos that currently reveal what the game is about. I think Bethesda is making a mistake here.

That’s exactly the problem. We have to assume that because there’s no way of verifying. Now imagine how people look against this who don’t have developers on the forum telling them that things will be alright.

Smooth indeed smart.

1: the playable build available is likely several months behind actual build
2: this is the way it will look to everyone first time played, clunky, all games do with a learning curve, timing will always be a factor, I’m just happy you can get over things that would block you in most other shooters

(DarkangelUK) #20

Bongoboy confirmed the build at EGE we played was well out of date, so fair to say these videos are well behind that.

Exactly. I found (As expected, and as we’ve all been told NUMEROUS TIMES) that leaving everything to SMART is not as efficient as doing it manually, but it still works as stated and gets you where you need to go.
