Smart

Just played BF3 beta, and could not believe how crap normal movement is when compared to brink. I just kept trying to climb up/over things (like a head height wall) only to be standing like a tool jumping up and down. I know brink’s movement system isn’t perfect but it’s actually something that i’ve grown to appreciate and expect.

This is one huge “thumbs up”.

Of coarse Brink has a VERY smooth SMART and it works very well.

I find that happens in all video games for me…

I also miss grenade cooking, interruptable reloads, no one-hit knife kills, no one-hit sniper kills and being able to instantly fire your weapon no matter what action you are doing. For a game that apparently failed, it got a lot of things right.

I find the movement in the Battlefield 3 beta pretty good actually. Sure, it’s not SMART automation but it’s nice and weighty and you can still vault over decent sized obstacles. On balance, Battlefield 3 retail is going to be a far superior game.

Agree with a few of your points though, H0RSE. To be fair to Brink, it did get a lot of little things right but unfortunately, it just got the most important things wrong (my opinion, of course).

Yeah, good example of the good ol’ “you don’t miss it till it’s gone”. And this inability to mantle and vault things becomes even stranger in a insanely realistic looking game like BF3. mantle and vault are very tactical abilities. Actually you should be able to run over a parking car and stuff like that.

But one other thing; isn’t it quite odd(in agood way), that SD didn’t put mantle vault in their abilities list. I mean like, you’d allready have some basic climb abilities, but for advanced stuff you’d have to chose it from your abilities list. And I know that in some way they did this with the body types(how could I not?), but since every thing in BRINK has its own aditional ability or attachment I’d have thought an “advanced S.M.A.R.T” would be one of it. Like you could jump down from a higher level, with less damage, or the knock down effect would be increased. They(SD) could have done this with individual movement abs or with complete packages. The only things that come close are reloading and grenade cooking while running/sprinting. But I’m glad they didn’t do it. I was just wondering.

All of which is outweighed by everything it did wrong.

Id take Brink over BF3 any day. I liked the sound, explosions, and the PC server browser, but dislike the general gameplay.

I think most people on this board would get more enjoyment out of Nuclear Dawn or Natural Selection 2 Beta than BF3… those games are cheaper and more interesting and better for teamwork.

Aren’t all the games in the above post betas?

@op: No. Didn’t miss SMART.

(INF3RN0) #11

I still think id3 engine movement + smart woulda been cooler.

(H0RSE) #12

…in your opinion.

(coolstory) #13

And the thousands of people who bought the game and stopped playing it after a week.

99.99% of the PC player base cant all be wrong.

(H0RSE) #15

fist, that’s a made up statistic, and second opinions aren’t right or wrong - that’s why it’s an opinion…

yes, their opinion too.

(zenstar) #16

Technically a possible fallacy (Vox populi iirc).
Just because the majority don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s bad. (Yes I’m nitpicking but it’s late Friday afternoon and work refuses to be over)
For a proper cogent argument you’d need to substantiate that it’s bad with the reasons why the majority have stopped playing (and those reasons can be found all over the place in various threads. Search for “troll” and then read 1 post above the result)

But I agree with you. IMO the game has no lasting appeal on PC, especially with no community behind it. The more people leave the less the remainder want to stay. Vicious circle and there’s not a lot to make people change their mind :frowning:

The measure Locki set prior to release was critical acclaim if I recall his interviews correctly. That’s not a measure I’d value but it is what it is.

yes, their opinion too.[/QUOTE]

If it’s an opinion that renders the game unplayable due to the lack of support then it starts being a fact.

(INF3RN0) #19

It is my opinion that a game that loses 90% of it’s original player base should clue in on the fact that something went wrong. The existing fan base prior to the game was already a minority compared to main streamers, so people that like Brink must be the Native American Indians of gaming… and they are satisfied by table scraps as opposed to a gourmet meal. Yea I rock the analogies.

99.9% is pretty close
