SMART Movement quote

(0xT1) #1

A while back badman[?] mentioned that during some game testing one of the developers executed a really surprising move involving a doublejump or walljump. Does anyone happen to know where the post is? I’ve tried searching for it but haven’t been successful.

Thanks

I think it was in one of the developer diaries?

(0xT1) #3

I’m pretty sure it was text but I’ll double check

(0xT1) #4

Just watched the dev diaries again and its not there.

This is from Brink Diaries but I don’t think that’s the one you are looking for:

There are so many neat acrobatic things you can do with SMART – efficiency-based timing things – that even the hardcore will get something out of SMART. We have a full team of testers and they are all hardcore players and when I go on, my job rocks at seeing all the things they are doing with all the body types.

There was one from Bezzy I think as a forum post where he talked about cool moves he’s seen guys do (I think, could ahve that mixed up).

(0xT1) #6

Yeah, thats not it. I’ll try looking up Bezzy’s post though, thanks.

(Cankor) #7

It wasn’t anything specific, just a general comment that he’s seen some amazing stuff. I think it was where he said he cries a little inside everytime he see’s someone generalize the SMART button. Hell, might not even have been him.

(LyndonL) #8

I remember reading it too, but can’t quite remember. Maybe Rahdo said it?

(0xT1) #9

Did a search on Bezzy, Rahdo and Badman and read until the third page of each [starts going too far back after that]. So far no luck =[

Is this the quote you are looking for:

Aubrey, our technical designer in charge of SMART, surprised all of us one time by running up a staircase, jumping at the end of the railing towards a big statue, wall-hopping off that statue sideways, and grabbing onto an upper ledge that no one thought could be reached. It was great because it cut off at least 10 seconds of his travel time to the front line. So far, no one else has been able to pull this move off again, not even Aubrey!

(0xT1) #11

Yes! Thank you!

(X-Frame) #12

So there are “moves” that even the design team can’t replicate … damn.

(H0RSE) #13

Not so much “moves,” as it is stringing moves together and using the environment.

From what I am learning about SMART, it is more than the sum of its parts. It offers a limited amount of ‘base’ moves - mantles, vaults, slides, wallhops, slide to break fall - and on the surface they may not look like much, but when players start getting creative - stringing them together in interesting ways and experimenting with the environment, it really opens up the system.

Sadly, many people see the limited amount of moves you can do, or even the things you can’t do (flips, rolls, etc.) and write it off as lame or gimmicky, without even really knowing anything about it.

You might have also seen the picture in this Dev Diary.

Ahuh! I knew it was Rahdo!

(SockDog) #16

I heard he was let out recently to spread bad news about there being no open beta. Clearly some evil tactic to befoul his name. Come on people. Rally! First we Free Egypt! Then we Free Ham!

Here’s the quote from Bezzy I thought you were thinking of:

Every time someone says using SMART means you don’t have to use skill, I die inside a little. It’s an oversimplification to call it an oversimplification.

You have jump and crouch, like any other game. You can slide, vault, mantle and wall hop manually just fine. As a convenience you can use SMART on top of those, or you can ignore one for the other. The best players use both as and when they need them. Different tools for different situations. They’re not using it because they’re mollycoddled by ease-of-use features. They use it because it gets it done when they need it done. It just works.

As a general game design principle, if you lower the barrier to entry, you must raise the skill ceiling. SMART enables some fairly crazy stuff at high level play. It doesn’t just normalize skill - it gives new possibilities. A vault on its own might be a common occurrence, but you’ll still see chains of moves which really impress you. The other week I saw someone speed vault into a wall hop to cover ground, then drop into a slide, knocking the enemy down, all while being shot at. Covered about 20 meters in 2 seconds.

Lights can be frikkin’ ninjas, but you have to work for it.

(light_sh4v0r) #18

yes that’s the one I had in mind as well.

(Crytiqal) #19

20 meters in 2 seconds? that must be the worlds fastests :stuck_out_tongue:

(LyndonL) #20

Athletes do the 100m in 9 seconds, so that’s on par if you had bullets flying up your ass too!!
