SMART and hit detection

(Bodo_Fraggins) #1

Looking at some of the latest footage and watching players using smart to jump, vault and slide all over the place … I am hoping that the hit boxes track well to the players changing body position

… an obvious move I can see happening is players sliding and shooting in a firefight, forcing their opponent to re-aim for a headshot. This would be cool if it worked as it should … good evasion tactic but players would quickly learn to counter with reflex and aim.

Anyone from SD or who has played at PAX etc got any insights on hit detection in Brink?

It will be the first thing people whinge about if it is borked on release.

p.s Does etqw style knife out strafe jumping still apply in brink? … you know where you flick from side to side with mouse and jump to move further/faster … It was also the old-fashioned way to get to hard to reach spots as well

Hitboxes - SD have assured this is fine and the hitboxes are exactly where they are supposed to be in a smart move.

Strafe Jumping - No strafe jumping, furthermore the weapon in your hand does not determine how fast you are. If you switch to pistol, you’re still at default speeds of your bodytype. You also have an unlimited stamina bar.

It’s a different strafe jumping than you think.

sif

good to hear that SD have given reassurances about hitboxes tracking properly.

I am probably just paranoid about hitboxes coz I have been playing BFBC2 ><

(IceBrazuca) #5

I was hoping they made it so the weapons you are carrying effect you sprint speed somewhat.
That way heavies and mediums can carry lighter guns and not feel handicapped.

Or at least whatever weapon you had on your hand
This way people can have the choice of carrying a kill-gun and a run-gun.

You really should watch the link posted in the post just before yours.

I know exactly what you mean. Its sucky hit registration caused number 1 and 2 on my list of big annoyances in BF:BC2: a crappy knife and headshot detection.
Number 3 would be the spotting system that sometimes doesn’t do **** when you hit Q even while you’re successfully shooting the guy. Number 4 would be… the ridiculous sniper shotgun?

“Grrr” about those headshots. Seeing a guy in a window. Only seeing a head. Aiming for the head. Shooting the head. Actually hitting the target. Somehow not getting the headshot…
There was only a head to hit and I hit something so just give me my headshot.

I would be so happy to play a decently balanced and polished game again.

Amen to that.

Not in the habit of defending BC2 (to me it was released unfinished and still isn’t finished even after the patches and releasing Vietnam) but the spotting system has a buffer of sorts so you can’t just continuously spam the Q key (like just write a macro so you’re always pressing the Q key no matter what).

Brink spotting is automatic, you don’t need to press a key at all, just point your gun at him.

It shouldn’t be a chore to spot enemies for your team.

Here’s 1 of our questions about hitboxes from our Q&A with SD:

Q11. With the new SMART system, can you tell us how the game handles characters’ hitboxes when going through a SMART move, and will players still be able to shoot as they would without the SMART system in action?

When we designed the SMART system, one of the guiding principles was that SMART would never interfere with your ability to fire your weapon. It’s there to support the gunplay, rather than take center stage. With that in mind, you can fire your weapon during any of the SMART maneuvers, albeit, as you’d expect when hurtling through the air, at reduced accuracy. Our hitboxes are divided up into several parts (think arms, legs and so on) that allow us to track where on the body a character is hit. These boxes stay in sync with the character model when going through SMART moves and other animations.

Thanks for the explanation and defending BC2 for the sake of discussion. I must admit I wasn’t aware of that buffer. But the game doesn’t tell you about its existence, does it?

So the explanation helps me understand how the spotting system works, but in my opinion doesn’t make it less bad.

And even knowing this, I can remember times when I was spamming Q because spot didn’t work in the first place.

So I’m also very much looking forward to using Brinks spotting system.

It’s a cool-down, just like the repair tool or all of the vehicle weapons. You can spot five times quickly before it “overheats”. If you want to continually spot without overheating the function, you have to wait about two seconds between each spot.

(Djean) #15

Thanks for the tip. Going easy with Q. :stuck_out_tongue:
But still it doesn’t always work the way it should.
And how do you know that by the way? I don’t recall the game giving any feedback on it. Did you look it up or is that personal experience?

(Herandar) #16

Same way I found the true weapon stats and other game mechanics… The Internet!!!

You are totally correct that sometimes you are looking directly at someone, you spot and they don’t show up. Conversely, sometimes you hit spot and guys behind cover and to the side of your screen appear.

any1 have a good image of ETQW hitboxes?

When you get poorly thought out controls guys who care a lot will find ways to work around them, such as using auto-hotkey macros. I know for instance there are macros for BC2 which let you turn the normal ironsites hold into a toggle as well as those which will automatically spot while you are firing.

BC2’s crappy PC controls to me are a result of it being a not quite finished console port. Did they ever fix the inverted UAV and helicopter controls? How about the vehicle 3rd person view being in the infantry context group? Implement a toggle for aiming down the sites? (I don’t know these answers because I stopped playing a while back) …or did they go ahead and work on other games (MoH and BC2 Vietnam to name 2) instead of finishing the one we paid for? Sorry for the rant, I’d still buy another DICE game even so because those things aren’t complete deal breakers, but if it came down to a decision between that and another game those issues would certainly color my decision. Probably won’t ever buy another Activision game though (and only using probably in case they buy SD or something crazy like that).

(Djean) #19

Well. Some of my friends went on to Vietnam which seems to be more polished, but I didn’t. I moved back to UT3. :stuck_out_tongue:
As for the inverted helicopter controls: they seem to have fixed that. It was my first major annoyance in the game, until I found out there is a checkbox for it in the game options. (I was looking for it in the controls section, but for some reason they decided it was more of a general thing…)
