Single ET instalation for dual-boot system

(next_ghost) #1

I’m going to reinstall my system completely next week and make a dual-boot system (WinDOS XP + Linux). I want to make single instalation for both systems on shared FAT32 partition. Is there something special to take care of or can I just install WinDOS version and slap Linux binaries over it?

get linux to read the windows drive and get Wine, its a program that lets linux use windows .exe’s

i’m assuming he’s smarter than that. wine blows. linux can easily access a fat partition and that’s his plan. i guess what i would do is download both the win and lin versions of the game and compare their contents. i would think they would be nearly the same, and any differences could be placed in one installation together as you suggested. in other words the game media should be identical except the binaries, which shouldn’t conflict with each other.

pretty cool idea actually. let us know if it works

LOL! Running CPU hog like ET on emulator! Now that’s joke of the year!

I don’t see any problem because game media will be absolutely identical and the only difference is in binaries. I just asked if anyone did it before me and so far looks like I’m the first. Well, I have nothing to lose except a few minutes for another instalation if something goes wrong. It’ll be on separate partition after all. I’ll tell u what happened when I get it working.

Edit: And I plan the same thing with Firefox and other things I’ll use on both systems so I can keep unified configuration and low disk usage.

Would surprise me if it didn’t work just fine.

Lanz: Never overestimate WinDOS and Micro$loth. What seems like a one-banana problem might turn into huge disaster on WinDOS

Yeah I know, but linux ET binary in same folder as Win binary and you should be good to go. The actual game code (.so) files is in mp_bin.pk3 anyway. I couldn’t find qagame.mp.i386.so in etmain though, but maybe I’m just blind.

Day after: Both systems are up and running, ET works well on both, configuration is shared. The only problem I have is with my ADSL modem (can’t get that little vampire run under Linux).
