SImple question from a noob 😉

hi all, first post here - hope it isn’t too easy for you!

I recently left a clan who loved me and who’s glorious and freindly leader was my best friend.
Despite these things I decided to move on even though they still want me and as such
am creating my own server.

I cannot afford webhosting right now, but need an HTTP redirect for my server - I am wondering
if the ET game engine can handle subdomains in the redirect cvar - such as ‘http://members.chello.nl/jaymod’ -
I will be using 2.55 if that amkes a difference.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can use subdirectories. However…
Downloads are quite broken in 2.55
Clients often crash after downloading, and an exploit in the download system can be used to steal your server passwords (this exploit is in the UDP download system, but you can’t allow www downloads without also having the UDP system enabled)

this pasword stealing also goes for version 2.60 ??

and if its really unsafe. then isn’t there an other wat for me to make the downloads faster??

the 2.60b server fixes the password exploit. 2.60b servers can be used by any 2.60 client.

www redirects are the only way to get fast downloads.

ok but the fact is allot of players still play 2.55 isn’t that right??

someone told me that 2.55 has like 300 servers and maybe like a few thousand players. then you have 2.60 and you have like 3000 servers and like 3500 players… is something like this true?? i mean dont mind the number to much but the logics behind it.

Use 2.60b and the redirect of your choice for your game server, if offers more protection for you, period.

Be aware that a non-mod 2.60b server will work with ANY 2.60 client, as noted by reyalp. If you later decide to install a mod (ETpro, etpub, jaymod) come back and ask our advice again, and we will still say use 2.60b, with a few more mod-specific details.

Use 2.60b!

Yes, there are a lot of people still on 2.55. It’s up to you to decide whether you are willing to tolerate the bugs. Technically, 2.60b is better than 2.55 in every way, but quite a few people insist on staying on the old version for some reason. The most common explanation I hear is that they like the community on those servers. Of course, if the admins would all update, all the community would have to as well.

yea :stuck_out_tongue: but thats not going to happen :stuck_out_tongue:

well ill try the 2.60b version first then see how things will work out. since im starting a new server anyway i dont expect allot of visitors yet.

anyway thank you all for your help and time.
