Should the tutorial be mandatory?

(Sorotia) #41
@Sorotia What I said was a terrible idea is a terrible idea, because then players who never completed the tutorial but played the game a lot anyway and actually learned it over time may become actually skilled. So you might have someone with the skill level of your average 30-40 but be level 5.

Not that this doesn’t already happen, but it would be much more prolific if it worked the way I outlined it.

And in case you’re wondering why I highly skilled level 5 is a problem, it’s because they’ll play on Max Lvl 6 Servers and make it harder for newer players to get used to the game.
So? A skilled player can’t spend a few minutes playing a tutorial? I’d gladly play the tutorial again if it meant more new people actually know what to do.

I’m frankly sick and tired of medics tripping over incapacitated bodies and begging for ammo while using my pistol only to get no support because they don’t know what they’re doing.

@Sorotia Did you read the last paragraph?

(bontsa) #43

Sorry to ‘quote’ you (and Montiel) in a bit confusing context @Szakalot , I wasnt implying you were towards mandatory tutorial but rather that one reason for some newbies cluelessness is due the major amount of information present rather than not going through tutorial.

I’m indifferent whenever it should be mandatory or highly incenticised. If/when/since mandatoryness is seen as a bad thing, sure proper incentive would be more than enough too. Giving starter credit bonus only if tutorial is cleared and communicating this clearly to players could do well for example. With such change though even smurfs would most probably go through it nevertheless in order to get hands on that first merc unlock for new account easier, but I dont think changes like this should be thought through with secondary accounts in mind at all.

(B_Montiel) #44

For engineers, what about a full map with scripted events ? (Airstrike beacon coming when EV cross a specific area, a bot spawns and repair first, secondary objectives to build for whatever reason…). Simple to understand, simple to create and straightforward. And give a cool bonus at the end.

(Dr_Plantboss) #45

I think that’s cool, but I think that it may make the tutorial too long and too much of an information flood. Maybe it could be implemented as a highly incentivised sort of second tutorial once you reach level 5 or something?

(Sorotia) #46

Oh…you mean that last little bit that has nothing to do at all with the tutorial? Yes I read it…

(SteelMailbox) #47

There is a search function you know:
http://forums.dirtybomb.nexon.net/discussion/16760/make-tutorial-a-must-play/p1
Still fucking relevant and if one of the mods is gonna close it for necro then it just shows how bad they are as a mod cause they always say “We aren’t closing threads that are relevant”.

(Ptiloui) #48

The problem is that i highly believe that a lot of people thinks this way : “Tutorial ? Pfff, im not a noob, i play CSGO (or any other FPS game), i know how to play”.

Maybe it’s true for a majority of games, but it’s completely false for games like Dirty Bomb. Because the number of kills you get won’t make you win (maybe except for the Defense side). And even the highest skilled player can’t win if he doesn’t complete objectives.

So, we can make the tutorial mandatory/rewarded so new players will be forced/encouraged to learn their job… Or we can let the way it already is and still see new players divide in 2 parts :

 • Those who don’t understand the game and stop playing it;
 • Those who do the tutorial/try to learn the game and will stay.

That’s why an engineer tutorial is absolutely needed, because they are the key of every missions in Dirty Bomb.

PS : About the Defense side of maps, Bridge is actually the only map that contains a defense objective that block the attacker path. On other maps, secondary objectives has to be destroyed to block them, and are already constructed when the game starts.

(Dr_Plantboss) #49

@Ptiloui Unfortunately, I feel like most people won’t stay anyway. Here’s my evidence: https://s19.postimg.org/k29tdkyfn/achieve1.png
If only 1.7% of players that have gotten the game stay to level 10, then sheesh…

(_retired_) #50

What it would help?

MOST players on this game have two modes:

-Camp forever and too scared to be killed
-Bumrush with Proxies or whatever and spam what you can

They never learn to flank or be aggressive in more than one way and never hold positions while defending.

IF the so called tutorials would teach people spawn times, flanking etc. then it would be totally different issue.

In min 10 servers people are stupid as hell so some tutorial how to drop ammo won’t help.
Same goes to competitive where people follow the same bad manners they learned from pubs.

It doesn’t help of course that the process of development many ways have supported this kind of idiocy.

(bontsa) #51

@retired Weren’t you gone for like 3rd “I’m gunnae quit for good” 's already?
@retired Weren’t you gone for like 3rd “I’m gunnae quit for good” 's already?
I haven’t played this for a while, tried few match like, month ago or so?
I’m just checking how this game develops or doesn’t, lol.

Let’s call it nostalgia.

He’s like the Rolling Stones who made their last tour for the first time before many of us where even born.

And hey, they even wrote a song about @retired:

This number is pretty meaningless because it takes into account the players that played Dirty Bomb before there were achievements and haven’t played since. Even if they are level 10+ the won’t get the achievement before playing the next time.

It’s more meaningful to relate this number to the players that made it to level 2, which currently is 17.1%.

So actually about 10% of the active players made it to level 10, which still isn’t stellar but less worrisome than 1.7%.

@teflonlove I was thinking about that last night as I was falling asleep and was going to edit my comment today :stuck_out_tongue:
I am more to classic Stones tracks like Paint It Black, even the lyrics match better.

But this is getting spammy so let’s drop it.
