Should ranked be more like normal game modes?

(Press E) #1

(I’d love to make this a poll, but sadly without the ability to choose multiple options it’s a bit pointless)

For me, the biggest reason I dislike ranked is because it’s only 5v5. I absolutely hate it, matches with less players are more boring imo, and one player leaving is a lot more damaging than a player leaving on a team with 8 people.
I’m curious what people think about ranked in this sense to see the main factor deterring people from ranked. Personally I don’t really mind FF and team collisions or stopwatch, but I can see why others might.

  • Should servers (maybe not all) be larger than 5v5?
  • Should servers not have friendly fire and team collisions? (Although it does make the game interesting, I can see why it would be frustrating)
  • Should servers be more than just Stopwatch?
  • Is there anything else anyone would want to see done differently?

well, less player is less chaotic

(everlovestruck) #3

Everything is fine to me regarding core mechanics
2x credits instead of 1.5x would be cool though.

Friendly fire is okay, but team collision is absolutely infuriating.

I made a large post about Ranked a year ago

They shifted to more individual scoring and tracking which is nice, but haven’t hit the other points. But to shore up some recent concerns too…

  • Unique mercs only (no merc stacking)
  • Raise Thunder’s flash cooldown a bit

And my personal insight

  • 6v6 only

I think 6v6 is far more fun, challenging, and diverse than 5v5, but I really don’t like 7v7

Team collision might seem infuriating, but it does force you to think about how you assault a choke point, how your team spreads out, and it prevents a lot of random team kills caused by having a teammate pass through you while you’re firefighting (often because YOU are moving around trying to dodge).

I also made a post on changes they should make to the Stopwatch format in order to make it more fun, engaging, and perhaps even a bit faster in many cases. That post is here:

But what keeps me out of ranked are 2 main things

-5v5 (75% of the reason I don’t play ranked. I hate it, it sucks, it’s slow, it’s boring, there are few viable strategies and it destroys all game play diversity)

-Metagame (Along with 5v5, the low player count and the ability to stack mercs on a team makes for a very dull, boring meta game)

(doxjq) #6

If anything I’d do the opposite. I prefer friendly fire and 5v5, but like Hammer said, I hate collision.

Personally I hate pub games now and have for a while. It’s a total clusterfk most of the time. If I had my way I’d ditch pub completely and just have ranked, but whatever really.

(Press E) #7

It’s also a lot more boring imo. I love clusterfucks personally as long as it’s not something like arty spam or 900 shotguns, but I can see why others might like less players.

I agree. This game isn’t really good enough to have team collisions. Touching a player doesn’t just stop you, it bugs you out so much that you can’t even move properly. Even worse in areas where the entire team tries to run down one route.

@STARRYSOCK

each to their own kinks

get it?
geit it?

ill see myself out

(Madonna_) #9

The worst part is fighting alongside a teammate near the EV as the body collision plus the bugged 3d model of the ev will just slow and make yourself stuck between the two.
I’ve been killed like a retarded a lot jusy because i was escorting the EV and got caught stuck on the side while a teammate was behind me blocking the run away path.
Collision needs serious reworks

Be Rhino
playing inna chapel
im a big boy, i protect ev
walk up to ev
gets stuck to the left side of the wheels
get shot at by enemies
pray to RNG god for protection
im gonna give RNGsus a white sheep sacrifice

people cant shoot me because ev front hitbox
drive by with ludacris get out da way muffled in the back (song)
skyhammers dont know how to align the marker
every skyhammer trying to throw airstrike misses because ev is fast
blasting every fool that comes out of da hood
mfw i escorted the ev alone with 5hp to spare

(doxjq) #11

@STARRYSOCK personally I hate airstrike spam, even though I main Arty. It’s half the reason I enjoy ranked more. Less players, so less spam, and since team damage is on there is less spam once again. It can be a little boring, but all in all people are more careful and there is way more coordination required. I honestly can’t think of any reason to choose pub over ranked, other than no queue times.

(Press E) #12

Like I said, I don’t really mind friendly fire much, it can be interesting sometimes, the main thing that bugs me is 5v5 only. Wish there was at least an option to have larger servers

The only negative thing about playing 6v6 over 5v5 is : more people per game , less your skill impact on game result.

It’s worth considering other aspects too. For instance, the less people per game, the larger the impact is if one player leaves

As someone who played in several competitive tournaments, I would actually like to see 6v6 instead of 5v5. With 5v5 and the way the meta works on most maps, you ended up seeing very little variety in merc comp and not because people couldn’t come up with interesting ideas. We would often come up with really cool concepts for strats but have to scrap them because we couldn’t afford to have anybody switch off their main merc to fill the role we would need. With that one extra player, there would’ve been a lot more room to come up with unique strats, executes, and counter strats.

Of course I would also like to see a 1 merc rule, since stacking of certain mercs can lead to some pretty cheesy gameplay, and now that there are more mercs maybe having a pick/ban phase before each match would be interesting too.

Also, keep in mind this is all based off how the comp scene was about a year and a half ago. Most of the competitive teams, including mine, left DB at around that time to go play overwatch and afaik DB’s comp scene hasn’t recovered since then.

(ThunderZsolt) #16

I would also prefer playing without team collision, but I have to admit, I also like how it forces the teams to spread out, not camping in the same spot. Also, you have to rethink the placement of ammo/health stations because of it.

I hate when I start cooking a nade, and my stupid teammates jump in front of me right before I throw it, so we both die. Happens all the time (silver II sucks  )

(Chris Mullins) #17

Collision and friendly fire do make things harder, but in the way that raises the skill ceiling. As a Nader (or anyone with explosives) I now need to be really careful about where I fire my grenade launcher, both where the projectile lands and if I hit teammates with it while it’s travelling. You also need to communicate well when airstriking or using artillery as the chance of wiping your team are high if you don’t.

Having matches 5v5, personally, I love it. As you’re a small group you need to work together and decide on strategies. Organise who is going to take what Merc and flank on which route etc. There’s much more purpose to every member.

Stopwatch is really the only gamemode that can handle Ranked. Objective, you only play one side of the map and for Execution the queues would be too long.

Since Ranked has been live I’ve had so much fun solo/duo and searching for 5 mans. This is how DB is meant to be played! There’s definitely room for improvements to be made in functionality, performance, UI and user experience, but I think this has been a very successful start for Season 2 and I can’t wait to see where it goes

(coruscate) #18

Stopwatch 5v5 with FF and Collision on or bust.

(LifeupOmega) #19

Pubs get boring when you realise pretty much every player is utter garbage. Ranked SW 5v5 ff on is how the game was meant to be played, and it shows.

(nokiII) #20

So the game is meant to be played with double thunder, vasilli, double aura? :^)
