Should I contact WCB before I hire Phantom? How about a reply from the "great" SD instead?

(Adam) #1

Hi, so I have boasted and said this 99999999999999999 times. I am a Close Beta player. Right now that is nothing special. Most people here are as of now. Later down the road we will be rare, and no one will care as we gloat about how cool we are…

The actaul post starts here

Originally Phantom was a Melee charactor. But from what I see, he doesn’t seem like he is staying this way. Originally he came with a pistol, which never helped him. SD has added an SMG to him. Which brings up 2 concerns.

  1. Is this Phantom? Sword swining, blade weilding Phantom? Or is he going to be a proxie with a cloak?
  2. Is his Melee combat going to be nerfed? In closed beta his left click was a 2 click kill, while the right was a lundge doing a 1 click kill. From what I see from the trailer, his lundge seems to be gone. He is also only shown killing half HP enemies, none of the enemys shown were poked at pre-screen. His cloak was also mega nerfed. I mean MEGA nerfed.

So I guess the whole sum is, is this a merc with a sword? or a merc with a cloak?

The sword takes the melee-slot on some loadouts. He’s a merc with a cloak

You can wait two weeks, he’ll be on free rotation then.

(Amerika) #3

The cloak could be handy at times but the real thing that makes him good is his shield. Being able to save yourself from an airstrike/beam or being able to soak to cover a defuse could be quite good.

He might not be the same merc from closed beta but he seems like he’s going to be good regardless since he has access to good SMG’s.

(Derpfestor) #4

The crotzny is definitely a favorite of mine.

(Ghosthree3) #5

Crotzni is definitely my favourite smg too.

Nothing like having a mini-Timik.

Apart from Phoenix’s 55 round SMG i really like the Empire-9 with its big 40 round mag.

I just wanted a melee class…

(watsyurdeal) #9

The thing with a melee only class is it’s relatively useless once the enemy knows what to look for.

Pretty much why the Spy was and still kinda is in bad state in TF2, sure he’s annoying but he lacks the proper tools to change up things when the enemy catches on to his tactics. Phantom seems more like the Infiltrator, who was designed to harass people to a point where they would follow you everywhere. If you could get half the team chasing you, you were doing it right.

Phantom I could see doing this, but I wonder if some of the decisions they made will backfire. Like people just using cloak as a second health bar instead of stealth tool, which is all it will be good for if you’re only almost invisible, rather than 100%. Why not full invis? Being revealed and suffering cloak loss when shot? And 50% damage reduction instead? It seems like they are still figuring out how he’ll be played.

(Ghosthree3) #10

I predict this will happen.

It’ll only work for when they’re trying to escape since it drops as soon as you do anything and drains the faster the more you move it looks like.

Yea but considering it can suck up about as much health as Aura, it’s basically a full blown shield against Nades, Sniper Rifles, Fragger’s nades, hell even Stoker’s incendiaries.

Seems like stealth or being sneaky is an afterthought, and with the same health as Skyhammer I imagine he’ll be a pretty rock solid combat class. I mean even Nader doesn’t have that.

I’ve gotten the impression he’ll be solid for combat and will annoy people. But once people learn to focus fire him it’ll be less of an issue until people start getting creative with him.

(XavienX) #14

I’m kinda disappointed because, as the OP is trying to say, he really isn’t focused on melee now. Even his alternative loadout cards don’t have Katanas, which mean he really can be just used as a cloaked SMG player.

(APRenpsy) #15

Pretty sure Phantom was designed to be a sniper at first. Been playing the game for a while and I remember him having a sniper rifle before that was removed and replace with a pistol. Seeing that he used to be a ranged merc I’m fine with him having some kind of gun.

(watsyurdeal) #16

Seems like he has an identity crisis, but I can say for sure that it’s good he has an SMG, since Aimee, Vasilli, and even Red Eye all have rifles. It’d be nice to have a more traditional operative like him.

I think what happens next is purely up to how the community uses him, and what splash deems is part of their design or not. I’m hoping they’ll lean more toward stealthy rather than stealthy tank.

(brawnyJester) #17

If he has a KEK-10 gg

(Mr-Penguin) #18

I think he does. Now it’s time to round up my credits and get a KEK-10 loadout with the katana.

I’m personally going to be playing the RNG game. Got enough silvers lined up so I can instantly trade up for a gold phantom. Wish me luck. >.>

Everyone reading this??? Look, this guy knows what I am talking about… I don’t want Phantom with an SMG… Infact, I may quit playing because of this. I know, it sounds immature, but this game is so dull to me. Phantom was really the only thing that kept me playing, and now that he isn’t the class I liked, I have nothing I like about the game.

Let’s hope SD makes changes to Phantom. SD, remember what MMOhuts said:

“Brings nothing new to the FPS genre”

I would rather he wasn’t… Phantom was a really good rush charactor… I think a poster above compared him to the Spy from TF2, but he is more like OP wan shinobi from Block N Load. He was a in your face, enemy panic type of class, not a sneaky deaky class like the Spy.

Phantom was the sword wielder…
