First of all, I wouldn’t trust an opinion for a FPS, from a group named MMOHuts.
Second, as TF2 has shown a character fully dependent on melee only is doomed. Because there will be scenarios that will be entirely out of your control. Like someone turning around at the right time, or another person coming around the corner to catch you in the act.
You need a backup plan, which is why he has an SMG. With the right tweaks he can be a mix of melee and gun. But it depends on Splash to decide where to go from here.
Personally I had no issue with Phantom in Closed Beta though… I was able to chain kills in CBT1 (when he was OP) and in CBT2, I was able to keep up with the team. The issue is alot of players don’t know how to use a class like phantom.
You also say TF2 Shows Melee classes can’t work. Look at Block N Load, look at Archem Impostors. 2 games that show that Melee does work. You base you opinion on a game where the class isn’t even the same. Spy is a stealth class, while Phantom is more of a rush class.
Also, Spy is not even close to weak. You obviously just need practice, there is a guy called “Arlix” he is considered the best Spy in the game. (maybe, I just looked up “best spy on tf2” into youtube.)
