So, I’ve played so much non-shotgun mercs at this point that when I went back to my gold shotgun Fletcher for the first time in almost 3 months I found I hated using the shotgun. I’ve found that I really prefer to use rifles or submachine guns and I’m curious as to the balance of what people use in the game. What do you prefer, shotgun or nah?

i use shotgun while playing aura in underground but thats because im pretty confident with my ability to go mid ranged with the caulden
also, other than aura, i often use shotgun on Rhino and proxy
(the short shotty has 192 damage on all pellet hit the head)

I hate them with a passion personally. I don’t think they really have much of a place in this game, and I really wish they were never added. Most of the kills I get, or have seen people get with them are insanely cheap.
I’ve always been against one-hit kills in every pvp game I play. I know it’s not one hit with all mercs, but it still feels cheap as hell one-shotting some poor new player.
I’m not saying they take no skill or that the people who use the are evil, but they seem out of place in this game to me
While I don’t exactly main them, I don’t think “Nope.” is the right option either. Shotguns are a pretty common weapon though in most shooters and removing them is almost the same as removing pistols, or snipers.
It can be frustrating at times to die by their hand, but getting sniped from the cross the map by a decent sniper can be just as annoying.
I dunno why, but I can chain Driess headshots at point-blank but can’t hit anything with a shotgun for the life of me.
Shotguns aren’t as useful competitively as SMGs (probably due to cyclic rate), but I don’t mind using them. What I don’t like about them is that their aim punch is significantly weaker than SMGs as there should be proportionate knock bck to the amount pellets that hit you.
The shotgun is only effective in Max LVL 6 servers.
Other than that, I prefer my Blishlok Aura.
I like how everyone says its inconsistent but whenever I use a shotgun I deal 70 damage to the skyhammer by the roof from construction window
Shotguns do have a lot of potential, but overall, rifles are more consistent, as their range is much farther. Personally, I like using shotguns, specifically, the Remburg. It’s damage potential is massive, that combined with a fast merc, you could do really well when flanking. Still, shotguns have a massive con, and that’s their huge damage falloff. If you can hit heads consistently, use rifles. If you like to be up close but can’t aim, use shotguns. But whatever you do, don’t be a dick.

… You’re doing it wrong. Regardless of how cheap people feel the shotties are, they absolutely shine their best when in the hands of people who can aim well, and if your aim is poor, they’re not going to make money.
I think both the Hollunds and Ahnuld need tweaking in their falloff range (with the longer barrel on the Hollunds, it’s pretty laughable that it does less damage than the Remburg, but I know DB isn’t chasing reality), possibly even the headshot multiplier being boosted from 1.5 to the normal 2.0 to encourage most accurate aim with an appropriate ever so slight adjustment to keep the Remburg where it already is. Just a little less legging people at short range.
Every now and then I like to use a shotgun merc to mix things up. They can be fun, the problem for me is that I’m not consistent. It’s really easy for me to miss when they’re closer than the optimal range, so I rely more on agility to stay alive long enough to pull off a kill.
Normally I just don’t play the mercs with shotguns, except Fletcher (fight me @sweetColumn) and that’s usually with the Blishlok.
I want a slug shotgun that has spread made to be aimed at people’s faces instead of chests. That and an objective damage buff to shotguns so they actually have a niche to play.
I mean, making the Hollunds a headshot damage weapon with 4 slugs being fired (instead of the standard 11) would be much better than what it is right now. It’s probably my least favorite shotty.
The Alhund has better range, reload speed per round, and the same rate of fire as the Hollunds. The Remburg would have the best objective damage after adding an objective damage buff to shotguns. This would leave the Hollunds in the dirt.
The weapon that the Ahnuhld was inspired from was a terrible piece of garbage in real life too, which had problems in loading rounds into the chamber and the magazine, which should result in a low rate of fire and reload speed. However in spite of having the longest full-magazine reload it has the highest reload speed per round.
A good weapon swap speed for the gun would make the thing rather strong though, which is possible because the action is right where the trigger is, making it easier to switch to the gun without needing to get on the pump action.
However right now it’s pretty much a straight upgrade over the other shotguns in spite of less DPS.
Meanwhile the Remburg is stronger in damage only because it has one more pellet than the others. It technically has more DPS which makes it have potential against objectives, but it still needs a buff nonetheless.
Ugh, I’m just making things too complicated. Have fun playing with something that isn’t working.

Personally, I’d rather they double the pellet count, lower the damage so a solid meatshot with all 18 pellets kills a certain type of merc. Remove falloff since, you will never get all those pellets to hit anything outside of a few feet. And finally, spead out the pellets so they are more of an oval shape rather than a circle, so you can hit multiple people with a single blast.

Yes, please. The current star-shaped spread pattern is just weird, and doesn’t make me think “shotgun.” It makes me think “star cannon”
