Shitty Lockup

Every time I play the game on a server for more than 5 or so minutes, it locks up and whatever sound is playing loops over and over again

(eg. Congratulations on your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion your promotion).

I have a powerful processor, but it still does this, what is the problem? Do you know any other posts like this?

2.516 Ghz Pentium 4
128MB Nvidia Geforce Card
Windows Xp Pro
Turned off indexing, no viruses, runs smooth.

sometimes new video drivers make it crash, dunno what to do against it. i suggest you the search feature :slight_smile:

Install an older Detonator driver, make sure your PC don’t overheat while playing, try a lower resolution … and use search could be helpful.

Yeah an extra cooling fan can make a HUGE difference.

There is a problem when using the latest NVIDIA drivers on a non-FX card’s, try detonator drivers version 45 or lower

yeah this has happened to me befor, only i forgot how i fixed it

i have the latest driver for my nVidia GeForce 2 (54MB) and everything works for me, i have a P4 processor and Soundblaster sound card!

Also if it is overheating and another fan would be too loud try water cooling, it sounds crazy but thats what is running on my network server :eek:

This is highly doubful its the detonator (now called forceware) driver problem as I was one of the many who had to revert to the old driver sbefour I bought my new card but that driver problem would crash your pc after the first couple of seconds and with his example you did not have enough time to get a promotion or basically do anything that would give a audio clip out as it was basically select your time … crash also to test if it is overheating you may have themometers already installed as some of the newer motherboards have a themometer behind the cpu so you can just read the temp after the crash or use a external themometer and read the readings just after the crash but it could be many other reasons for the ones already explained :confused:

The 5X nvidias are buggered with older cards. Causes big errors with Q3 Engine and some times NWN. I use the 42’s

i had a similar problem, i know lots of people do and the solution seem to be different for everyone. if you have tried the normal stuff, like getting 40-something drivers, reinstalling etc. you might want to read how i solved it when i had the problem:

I have a similiar problem and have lock ups too but I can recreate it everytime. If I press <Ctrl> and then <Alt> too fast, it’ll lock up. When it does even Task Manager won’t end the program and I have WinXP Pro. As far as I can remember it has done this since the first release. I use this alot to track my progress during a game but as long as I don’t alternate between the both too quickly I’m O.K.

Any ideas?

Try shutting down Punkbuster.
In my case punkbuster and the latest nVidea drivers collided, resulting in a complete lock-up.
With Punkbuster off it works perfect :banana:

Yup, i had it yesterday, pressed right alt and ET froze. PB enabled server, i have an Nvidia card with 42.58 (i think) drivers.

Try using the PBWEB util at www.evenbalance.com to ensure you are fully upto-date with PB. (Should already be in your PB\HTM folder).

Then, in game, type at the console /pb_sv_disable this will disable the server side extensions of PB leaving just the client running. (It will require a game restart to become effective).

I dont know if this will help you, but it is the advice given to me by Tony at Evenbalance when I suffered similar lock-ups in the past.

It worked, btw.

Ok, ive had the lockup 2 times yesterday, i updated pb with pbweb.exe before i went online. Its really irritating.
