Shacknews Q&A

(datoo) #1

There’s a brand new Q&A with Paul Wedgewood at Shacknews. Some stuff we’ve heard before, but really nice in-depth answers:

Yay.

i wonder what the compression rate is of such a megagen created map which has 5gb

The really amazing thing about the MegaTexture technology is that only around ten megabytes of video memory and twenty megabytes of system memory are used to display it.

cant wait to make some maps for this game and see what this megatexture technology is really capapble of

Good read.

Most of it is about SD working with ID on new technologies, and when you put them all together, it really has me impressed. Splash Damage is not only creative and detail orientated with their gameplay, but also with their code.

The network ‘area of relevance’, low memory usage for the mega texture, and the explanation about terrain without distance fog makes me think- not only will Quake Wars be fun, but it will run smooth too.

Me too. I’ve been working with D3 and just started on Maya… it sounds really cool.

Even though we know it has little memory footprint and all that, we still don’t know how much HD space it’s gonna get. But since it seems to be made procedurally based on the rest of the answers, it’ll probably be just a bit too.

Well considering you normally have to load a whole texture for the video card to display it, the 10-20MB footprint implies fairly small textures. Now mind you they may have some different system for things that has the original texture clocking in around prolly 100MB for a well-compressed texture as big as a megatexture would be and then factor in multiple maps and yes, you could possibly be looking at a fairly large install footprint (Devs? Any comment?).

But considering how well ET was done and the fact that SD certainly looks to have done their homework with the engine and all, I don’t think we’ll have anything to worry about. In fact, if all goes as planned, this game will probably not make you have to go out and buy a whole new computer!

unlike UBi’s GRAW who have basically stuck 2 fingers up at the community and said u have to buy a better pc to play this, as it dont support all the old cards!

That makes me think of how battlefield 2 has no support for geforce4 cards, despite supporting the equivalent ATI cards.
