Setting Up A Server - Halp! :)

(Lukano) #1

So on a whim I decided to try to throw together a server on a spare machine I have running at home. Figuring that I’d rather have it run automatically (scheduled, NT service or other automated startup) rather than using the gui, I did some research into it.

I found quite a few tutorials or guides on how to set up an RTCW server, but very little on ET. I know that there’s going to be little (if any) difference, but I still can’t seem to get the damned thing to work.

What exactly do I need to do to make a dedicated server that I can run from startup or as a service? What .cfg’s do I need to make that aren’t already there? Is +exec server.cfg the only .cfg I need to exec and the only commandline option needed to be added to the shortcut for the server?

Better yet, why not get someone to make a new forum for server admins/configs/etc? Might be useful.

And / All help is appreciated! :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers!

  • ps - I did find an earlier thread, but as that’s for ET:TEST alone I thought if I was able to start a new thread and get it stickied it might be of some use to others in my situation. (plus info on mapcycles and other interesting additions and stuff in the full version not included in the previous thread)

hehe server.cfg is the only one you need to exec

just make a shortcut and add the following commands behind and the server is running

+set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg

=)

Actually, it appears that although I didn’t think my server was running, it actually was -just took a few minutes to propogate on serverlist-.

A few other questions. What changes could/should be made to the maplists? Is antilag really a useful thing to have on or is it better for gameplay to have it off?

Any other tips, tricks, changes or alterations the server-admin community would advise?

well ET maps are binded together if it was up to me i wouldnt change anything. antilag smoothen out lag between every one on the server so that the pings are stabil turning it off will make some people have higher pings and others low =)

so decide yourself if you want it on or off

hopefully some help customising your server

like it says its a early draft though… most info in the brief descriptions in the cfg file itself

as for antilag heard no real feedback regarding et, but will be the same thing as in rtcw and it wasnt exactly popular there (though possibly due to players being used to not having it?).
