Setting up a server for friends - not able to connect

(FoolInjection) #1

I’m trying to set up a server for my friend on my home computer. Nothing special, just a little 16 man sever on my 1MB connection so when we aren’t in college we can have a shoot at each other.

Now in college on the network I managed to set up a server no problems. However the same server cfg file doesn’t want to work on my PC.

The only thing i changed was to make it a dedicated internet server (by changing the 1 to a 2) and then by putting in my IP address and my port.

The server shows up on my local listings OK… and i can connect to it… hoever my friends get the awaiting connection message when trying to connect to the IP and it goes nowhere.

Anyone got any ideas as to what is going on here ?.

Thanks in Advance
Andy.

do you have a firewall or a router ?

firewall: turn him off and see if this helps, if it does, configure him so et.exe can access the internet
router: make sure the port 27960 or the port you are running ET on is forwarded to your computer

Also … you probably won’t be able to support more than 8-10 players without it getting too laggy.
Although you have a 1Mb connection, that figure refers to your download speed. The upload speed on a broadband connection is typically 256Kb. You can configure the server (and clients) to cope better but that is beyond my knowledge.

I’m not behind a router so that shoudln’t be a problem. I’m using Zone Alarm as a firewall… and it should be configured OK to allow that port to go through.

All I really need the server fo it to allow myself and a few of the other guys , about 10 in all to get online outside of college hours and play so only being able to host about 8-10 people isn’t much of a worry… What i just don’t understand is why that it just will not connect for them… I’m giving them the IP address and the port number i’m putting intot he cfg file adn like i said its comming up awaiting connection then just sitting there.

If it is the firewall… how would I be able to forward the ports in Zone Alarm ?. or at least check.

ok scratch that… it IS the firewall… i switched it off and my friend got connected…

so now what i need to know is how to get the firewall configured to allow incomming connections via that port… I’m using ZoneAlarm (the free one) anyone know how to configure it ?.

These instructions are for ZoneAlarm Pro but should give you the idea:
