Server Specs

(WeedFreak) #1

i currently have a et server set up and would like to know from all you expert admin’s out there if it would be safe to put my player slots up from 26 to 64 ?

server specs
MSI Mainboard (Linux and Windows 2000 compatible)
AMD 2400XP CPU
1 Gb PC2100 DDR Ram
80 Gb Seagate Barracuda 8Mb Cache Hard Drive
connection 1mb/sec
Intergrated Sound and 3D Graphics
16x DVD Drive

so what do you think can i do it ?

What? Only 16x DVD ? Forget it :bump:

(WeedFreak) #3

i’m not a sever expert hehe

but does the DVD drive really matter ?

or are you trying to be funny ?

ET’s internal clock (which is used to time events ‘in-game’) is derived from the speed of your DVD drive, if you’ve only got a 16x drive then things are going to be pretty slow. Your better slinging the DVD drive and replacing it with a a 52x CDROM - it’s the only way your going to get 64 player slots working correctly :open_mouth:

*maybe I should have waited a week or so before posting this…

No.

In fact, 26 slots seems a bit high.

Your system specs are fine there m8, make sure you are using the latest bios for your MSI board… since personally i would NEVER ever use an MSI BOARD for production servers

But one more hint, Dont make a 64slots servers… we players would be more happy with multiple servers 16/18 slots, no n00bs, 3 maps campaigns

am guessing ur upload speed is around 30kbps? if so i recon 24 could be a bit high also… as was stated before. I dont see nothing wrong with yout pc tho for servering the game, just u need a big fat pipe to run 64players.

The most important thing is your upstream, 4KB/sec per player is the absolute minimum, so 64 players would require an upstream of at least 2048 KBit.

As you only have a one MBit connection (if it’s synchronous) your server shouldn’t be bigger than 32 players, if you want to have some reserver left (always wise) you should probably stick with your 26 server.

thank you all very much for your help

i have took what you said in to consideration and agree the server would be best if it had 18 - 20 player slots

so my dvd drive does not really matter then eh ?

just i am no server expert but, i did not think that the my dvd drive would effect my server one little bit

(evilsock) #10

just a joke - good luck with your server

(WeedFreak) #11

thank you for saying good luck

but tbh that info that you posted was out of hand,i was all worried for a second and was getting ready to buy a new dvd drive

:open_mouth: - no, no, no - don’t do that! Lesson learnt - I’ll make sure my posts for questions like this are accurate in the future. If I can help you I will - I remember what it was like getting the info together for a custom campaign - the guys over at trickery.net were very helpful and I intend to be the same where I can.

Just a quicknote: What OS are you running on the server? Since alot of people forget to make a “Server Plan” which covers the following basics:

Update the OS ( Make sure the newest patches are installed )
Harden the OS ( Make sure the OS is hardend against attacks by means of firewalling etc )

Lots of people just connect it to the Internet and a couple of months later they find themselves being hacked or used as a SPAM server.
