Server Slots, 24 Too Many?
Well, I can no longer play ETQW online. That thing I mentioned before about the weapons not firing or firing sporadically, now seems permanent. I cannot just hold down the mouse button. It’s like the connection keeps getting broken.
For example, I can’t cook grenades. If I try, it just keeps throwing them. It’s almost like a turbo feature. Just hold down the button and it keeps chuckin’. Same when shooting. It’ll fire a round here, fire one there. But if I want to keep firing, I have to keep clicking.
I thought perhaps my mouse was going. But after testing, it only happens playing QW online. Not in any other app. Not playing QW offline.
I don’t know what the hell changed in the last couple of weeks, but it has brought my QW gaming to a dead stop. First unplayable lag, now just unplayable. Checked connection again after latest attempt, as good as it’s ever been.
Would love to hear any thoughts on this.
Edit:
Correction, it only happens on a populated server. I just now went on an empty server, no problem.
Prediction of 20+ is sooo huge, can’t hit a shit on jesusServer last day, maybe you like playing with lag on every party
I just realized that a new gfx driver I installed was causing me to drop to 5fps every other second >.< (couldn’t figure out what was going on)! If it is smooth offline, you may want to play with your online settings or try different servers. I have that happen to me all the time when there is a lot of traffic on my network ( >300pings especially ), otherwise lack of consistency in the packets can also cause it as well. Try resetting your modem/router etc as well.
Well, did the modem/router thing. Didn’t expect much there. My connection has been really good lately, which is kind of unusual for Comcast. Eliminated any connection related lines from autoexec and deleted QW generated configs. Even tried moving mouse from USB to PS/2, in case that might have been some issue. Problem still persists. Let me tell ya, it’s a blast going up against a hyper firing your assault rifle one click at a time.
Funny thing, I logged on just before you got on tonight Inf, and was actually playing ok, until about the time people started complaining about lag. Then this crap started up again.
Maybe it’s just a sign. How many more months 'till Brink?
Try setting net_showAsyncStats to 1 and see if you’re getting any packet loss. Also try adjusting net_clientUsercmdBackup (its maximum value is 10, drop it down a bit from that until you find something acceptable) to re-send your packets.

At the risk of saying something obvious, there are config files in your profile directory as well, if you want to make a “fresh” start you should probably delete profile.cfg as well.
Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll try adjusting those settings and see if it helps. The game is driving me nuts atm. It’s not as bad as Apocalypse_Pony describes but it’s definitely very annoying.
It’s hard to explain, but it’s like the client loses track of what’s happening on the server and then decides to catch up real quick. Usually after someone killed me :(. Don’t matter much wether I play on Euro or NA servers, it happens on both and it happens too often.
When I’m in a one on one fight, I’ll be shooting someone, thinking “you should be dead by now”, I die instead and the game starts to track the player that killed me. A lot of times he’s not in the place I thought he was and more often then not there’s a little yellow or red blib on my lagometer.
I realize that people have been complaining about the netcode from the start, I’ve had some funny experiences myself from time to time, but I never really cared about the quirks since they didn’t really distract from the game play. At least not for me.
Something’s different now.

I tried “net_showAsyncStats 1” on-line.
Cool, more numbers on my screen but what do they mean and what range is okay for each of them? What am I looking for?
I can see the following things when I enable that::
- amount of data sent and received
- same thing for voice data
- packet loss in percentages
- client prediction, some number
- number of predicted frames

I think that a big factor is the sh!t quality of NA game server hosting. It sounds like EU servers don’t have half the problems of those in NA. Just yesterday I was playing with a pretty stable connection and the MCP tk’d me when I was inside the second story of a building. Gave us a laugh, but seriously wth…
God damn it, never mind. It is the mouse. It seems the stress of playing QW online brings out the fault in the left MB. Under normal use, it’s not noticeable. I switched MBs, firing with the right, and playing just now, I had no problems. (Well, aside from having to fire with the RMB:tongue:) On a UK server no less.
With all this crap with the lag-tastic play recently, I jumped to the wrong conclusion. Oh Dear.
Oh well. New mouse on order. Thanks for the help fellas.
the bottom line is…
netcode in qw is shit!!
the best servers on vanilla are the 16slot servers more slots…more lags
promod has no lags but the hiboxxes are bad from time to time

I guess I’m going to have to play Euro from now on. Nothing but one crap game going on Stateside earlier, so I said hell with it and joined a U.K. server. It was maybe a little sluggish, due to the triple digit ping. But the lagometer was pretty much rock steady the entire time.
And when the MCP drop came, I was in the Tormentor. So I went stationary, to brace myself for the inevitable MCP lag… and it never came. Like I said, it may have been a little sluggish, but there was non of this nonsense with people warping around or coming up through the ground, like some creature of the undead.
Man, I swear, the EU is the place to be for online gaming these days. And I’m not just talking about server quality. Seems to be a better player base as well. At least when it comes to trying new things.
yep, client-side netflow jitter fluctuations was make both engine working and gameplay, problematic.
and resources consumption is skyrocketing in that case, btw.
Yup. EU fibre optic networks are state of the art compared to the NA scene. As a result they get super bandwidth and speeds up to spare (Almost on par with Japan). The sad part is that the telecoms promised state of the art fibre in NA in exchange for unregulated Long Distance. Regulators fell for it, the telecoms got the deregulation, but didn’t hold up their end by installing all fibre optics - and the regulators did and continue to do nothing. Had they held up their end, NA would be enjoying mega speeds in the range of 20-40 GBPS, instead of 4-15 GBPS.
PS. There seem to be plenty of NA servers, when I try, but not many that don’t use Punkbuster, and not nearly as many as EU.
