Server shutdown problem

(ButchCassidy) #81

I’m getting these game shutdown disconnects almost every couple of hours…

How on earth are we supposed to support this game?

(Flubber) #82

Got my 2 main servers shut down again, Splash damage won’t you even post something, that’s just incredible. You sold massive amount of this game but doing nothing for people to play it in good condition. Your game is going to die, and seeing how you care that’s maybe be a good thing. I’m sure there’s a lot of people working on a magnificient Tank Armor DLC.
After all that’s all you care about.

(The-Crow) #83
Well looks like we don’t have a fix for this in the latest patch, both my servers dropped out on the game shutdown bug overnight and the reduction in server CPU usage is hardly noticable…It’s still way way too high…I have some Red Orchestra servers with 50 players on them that use less CPU than Brink with just 16…

Come on SD throw us a bone here!!!

These are critical issues for Admins…repeated server drop outs and very high server cpu usage…Your making the game very difficult to host and for a game designed around MP that’s not good news…
So a little help in solving these issues would be appreciated very much…
+1 my sentiments exactly.

At the very least please PLEASE focus on fixing the server disconnect issue and the AllocRenderModel Crashes which are constant crippling issues for server admins & players alike.

High CPU usage I can deal with for now and Free DLC I could not care less about at this point because the servers & thus the game are horribly broken, but dedicated server software that crashes and disconnects all the time I cannot tolerate and I am pretty sure players beyond myself are getting fairly sick of these two issues also.

UPDATE: just logged on remotely to find my server had been disconnected again… restarted it. Timestamping would be really nice in the console…

(The-Crow) #84

Mine just disconnected again, I can’t be bothered constantly checking it from work anymore so I am shutting it down.

(Lokalen) #85

To avoid too much spam I will only report what happened this morning with the servers:

This is my log from when my script had to restart the server (either process down or no response from rcon (checked locally):

1:29 AM All servers down (4)
1:34 AM All servers down (4)
1:49 AM 3 servers down
2:04 AM All servers down (4)
2:09 AM 1 servers down
2:49 AM All servers down (4)
2:54 AM All servers down (4)
6:44 AM 3 servers down
7:09 AM All servers down (4)
7:14 AM 1 servers down
7:19 AM All servers down (4)

So, during a period of 6 hours we’ve had servers go down 36 times (!!!) No load on computer during those hours, no changes in configs or anything like that. Just a new server patch that brought more trouble than solutions.

Please, server stability is the number 1 issue here. It is a multiplayer game for Pete’s sake, all other problems can be dealt with but not having the servers drop every 10 minutes.

I understand that it takes a while to stabilize a program but this is looking alot like Black Ops all over again. No fix for server stability, no communication with the scene - please Splash Damage, show us you care and at least respond!

We are having the same problems with our 4 servers. I gave up and took them off line.

This is VERY discouraging. It is a big flop for multiplayer when the servers are so unstable.

Are you even working of these issues SD?

This should be of the highest priority.

(ButchCassidy) #87

I must agree Buster…These are critical issues that effect ALL servers not just a few…

I have a very good friend who owns the 3rd largest GSP in the UK…They are seriously considering taking all of their Brink servers down and not offering them again until the shutdown and huge CPU usage issues in particular is sorted and the servers are stable…

I can’t believe i am actually taliking about this…lol…with game that is a couple of weeks old.
I have no doubt that SD are very well aware of these issues.
But the lack of feedback from them only leads to rumour and frustration from many admins who simply want to know that the issues are actually being dealt with.

So I again ask SD to please communicate with your community Admins on the progress of fixes for these critical bugs…

(zenixthepowner) #88

It’s so annoying. I can’t understand why it wasn’t fixed in the last patch, since its a critical bug.

(Lokalen) #89

Well, the general problem here is that the game developers and publishers don’t see any money being generated from having people hosting servers. It is more economic to just dump a game and then try to make a new game as soon as possible so sales go way up high.

This is very unfortunate for us, and I still believe that they will sell more games if there are good quality servers out there. But try proving that in figures and comparing them to the sales they make on the game with a couple of fancy promos on TV. And since no matter how much we say we are going to boycott the game and bring down servers it doesn’t affect the fact that we already payed for the game…

Well I took my server down not as a direct boycott but because I run multiple game servers as a hobby always with the same name and I think this constant crashing is probably damaging the good name & good will I have built up over the last 2 years since I started hosting game servers.

Aside from that yes I paid for brink, infact being in Australia I paid a godamn premium ($80USD) because I really wanted this game to succeed and ti is fun to play dont get me wrong. That said amongst the gaming clan I am a member of and several high profile forums I am a member of I have made it very clear Brink is not worthy of purchase yet. So far only 2 people besides me amongst the 100+ in our clan actually purchased brink and al 3l of us pre-ordered and got it launch day. The interest thread for brink had more than 60 people who responded as wanting to play Brink, so there is 57 potential sales at $80USD a pop $4560 in sales that won’t happen as it stands which I suppose is a drop in the ocean for one clan but I wonder how many other clans have recomended people wait and see ? A lot of reviews are doing the same.

Aside from that 2 members of our clan work for an ISP that hosts Brink servers and there is serious consideration being given to taking down their 6 brink servers simply because they keep falling over.

I know what you are saying about marketing vs potential sales but still, this game is losing sales and losing players (which TBH are the best way to generate sales using the tried and true (and free) method of word of mouth) and now losing servers. I hate the situation because I love the game but right now I can see it will never achieve its full potential in the state it is in.

I loved ETQW but without the community it had the game would have failed hard, this is what a worry is going to happen to Brink.

(ButchCassidy) #91

I find it incredible that this thread is now 5 pages long and had almost 3,000 views, which makes it by far the biggest in this section of the forums.

And the only SD guy to acknowledge these problems was ANTI who said the info posted was “very useful”

Now forgive me if i feel a little let down here but the 3 biggest issues regarding servers are the constant game shutdown bug, the AllocRenderModel Crashes and the ludicrus amount of CPU usage per server.
And yet we have not been given a single post stating that any of these issues are being looked into or will even be fixed with the exception of a so called cpu usage fix in the last patch (Did you guys actually test this and can we see what you think you reduced it by? because i’m not seeing didlysquat by way of cpu reduction) they have remained unnervingly quiet about getting the servers stable…

So it is no wonder that GSP’s, Clan Admins and gaming groups are beginning to doubt SD’s will to actually fix this game.

If SD can’t be bothered to even reply to some simple questions regarding support, are they bothered about fixing it?

Time is not on SD’s side here…The longer these issues go on the more players/customers the game will lose…And these days customers have lots of choice so who knows if they’ll bother to come back…

(Lokalen) #92

Don’t get me wrong, I really hate the way they treat the community. I too have been running several game servers (with a very high standard and enthousiasm) since '97 much like you have. I don’t earn anything from the servers since I want them to be as publically free as the servers I grew up with.

All we need is a little attention from devs in the beginning sorting the stability issues out and then providing us with tools to mod the game. That’s it, we’ll take it from there and create a scene around it. We did this for Counter-Strike, we can do it again. People like to play a good game for a very long time if the whole scene enjoys the game. If we server providers can make sure that the servers are top notch the gaming experience for the players will reflect this.

And this will in turn generate more sales. Mouth to mouth and good reputations will sell the game long after the release. Maybe not the same amount as the release week-end but still.
But, I bet some business analytic did some counting and just said to everyone that it is better to do a annual release of the same game but call it something else. Look at titles as Battlefield, COD, Fifa, NFL etc. Some just slap the year on there, some call it something more clever. It is still the same game but with some new decals in the engine to make it look new.

Splash Damage and Steam seemed at first to be the fresh initiative. THey have experience with games that last long and lives on the scene. I still have hopes for it, but I seriously can’t understand why they don’t say a single word. I mean, just a “hello” would do. I work 9-6 every day (as a programmer), I host 50+ servers in 5 games, I have a 3 month old baby at home with my beautiful wife and I still manage to cover at least 5 different forums (thank god for notifications by mail) without much problem. THey serisously need to learn how to communicate and what benefits they get from it. People are getting really frustrated with this **** and I hope that more will voice their oppinion so that they finally get the point.

(rookie1) #93

Mine when off again :frowning: and I will let it OFF.Nothing I hate more than playing on a server than its crashing in mid game

(Seven.) #94

See my signature >.<

(Cyan) #95

A multiplayer game where you cant even keep your servers up and running and nothing but silence from Splashdamage.

Also, i find this ironic (from IRC today)

<@badman> Affe, most GSPs run Windows servers these days so that was the priority

So priority is non working server bins? You got a shetload of work ahead of you splashdamage, i just hope people will have more patience this time around (etqw comp scene was GONE, when the game was finally fun to play)

(Lokalen) #96

Mine too!!! =)

(AO) #97

Thanks for all the console logs, we’ve managed to reproduce at least one server disconnect issue here.

(cralexns) #98

That is good news! Hopefully you will find a solution soon, in the mean time would it be possible to make the console close when a game server shuts down? It would go a long way in alleviating the troubles a lot of us are having in keeping our servers available.

(rookie1) #99

Strangely I just look my server That I took care to stop earlier and saw it was back running .Must be by my Host tech idk.
Well its busy and SD just gave me some hope ^^
So i will let it running and see

(ButchCassidy) #100

Well fixing just one servers no good…lol:D
