Change the value of ‘com_hunkmegs’ to one third your PC’s ram.

Only thing I can think of. Its always happened in Q3 engined games and one main thing was the above. Try simply bringing down console after you were kicked and see if by any chance it was PB. PB likes to kick you before you even initialize the game and as ETs like wtf happened it hits with that error. Even just do a /reconnect in console (`) after it and it should just rejoin… pain in the ass but works.

does your computer takes really long to load a map ? Say, 30 sec or longer? If so than thats your problem, you probably need a faster computer or try defragmenting your HD. I had the same problems, it turned out that my pak0 was heavily fragmented, after defragmentation levels load a lot faster now.

I defragged 2 weeks ago… using diskeeper i have a pentium 4 1700 Mhz 256mb Rambus, and a gforce 4 tI4200, and a Creative labs Audigy platinum soundcard

It does take long for a map to load, and when i reconnect… all my XP is gone… :frowning:

But imho my pc should be fast enough for ET… i mean… i can play new UT2004 demo without any problems too

And uhmm… how do i set: com_hunkmegs?

(BondyBoy007) #5

it seems like you haven’t got enough memory, 256MB is not much by todays standard

you could try increasing your hunkmegs but with only 256MB to begin with I don’t think you’d be able to increase it by much

(Harry) #6

Ok… so how do i set those hunkmegs?

(Harry) #7

And a nother thing… this is a problem that i didn’t have from the start… it was fine before… but slowly it begin to happen more often…

256 might not be too much… but i was able to play with it before… so why not now?

(senator) #8

I used diskeeper, too, and even thou I had 20%free HD space (as recommended) after 10 (!!!) defrag runs (including 2 boottime defragmentations) my fragmentation level was still way to high! The only thing that helped was moving the pak0 from one HD to another and back again. Check the diskeeper report of the most fragmented files whether any files from ET are in that list.

(Harry) #9

i reinstalled the game since then so i should think that’s ok

( even redownloaded game for that )

(senator) #10

Not necessarily. If your HD is heavily fragmented and you reinstall ET you’ll get a fragmented game again

(Harry) #12

i reinstalled after i defragged, according to Diskeeper my disc was not fragmented anymore

But anyway… still nobody told me how to set those hunkmegs?? Help me out please guys?

  1. Bring down console with the key below Escape
  2. Type “/seta com_hunkMegs XX” (without the quotes), where XX is number of megabytes. (I wouldn’t recommend going above 72 with only 256 MB RAM, but it won’t hurt trying.)

You could also try setting the swap file to a fixed size (at least 512 MB), that can work wonders on low RAM comps. Also make sure you close down all other programs before starting ET.

(next_ghost) #14

U don’t need ‘seta’ to set it. Just ‘/com_hunkmegs xx’

(Psycho Al) #15

Doing just /com_hunkmegs ## will not work. It’s not a dynamic setting, it requires a restart of ET. If you type it on its own during play and then check it you’ll notice it reports your new value as latched or something similar.

(Harry) #16

i did /com_humkmegs offline… and restarted game… that ok?

btw… i played RTCW ET all night last night without getting disconnected… ;-)))))))))

Dunno witch of the many solutions did the trick… but it seems ok now…

So anyone who helped me… thanks!

(next_ghost) #17

And when using ‘seta xx yy’ sets it imediately? I think u’ll need /vid_restart in both cases.

Punkbuster is a piece of junk. Unless you have a very high end system it will hassle you with PB Init Failures and “Disconnected for Unknown Reason”. It wasn’t always this way either. When Enemy Territory was first out I had absolutely no problems playing on PB enabled servers. Within the last few months it has done nothing but hassle me though. Evenbalance made some kind of change that makes Punkbuster much more demanding on your system.

And yes, I have used PBweb several times with no change. I can play a few maps then I start getting disconnected during map loads. Even when I don’t get disconnected I will see at least 2 or 3 players get disconnected for “PB Init Failure” or some other Punkbuster error that says “Reinstall Punkbuster if the problem continues” after I finish loading.
