Server bandwitdh usage problem

(beservers) #1

Hello,

I noticed that ET uses much bandwitdh when the gameserver is empty with a CPU usage of 0%.
It’s sending about 5,5 MB of data a minute. 1 mbit/s is a little to much for one empty gameserver

Screenshot in attach.

I’m running it on Windows 2008 64 bit.

Any idea?

Thanks

Is there a TV server hooked on to it?
First thing that came to mind srry

Also, is there noone else playing ET at the moment somewhere else in the network?
Because I just tested it (cmd.exe ipconfig /all) and the resource monitor also showed me the ip’s and resources of anyone else in the network.

Thanks for the fast reply.

There are other games installed on teh server, but no other ET servers.
The server is empty, Nitmod and Omnibot are installed. I already disabled them, but that doesn’t change anything.

When I stop the ET server the netwerk usage drop with 1mbit/sec. So the problem is with the ET server.

I’m testing now on an other server with a clean install and with Windows Server 2008 R2.

I did a fresh install on a different ip and it works fine.
Then I did a reinstall on the current ET server. Same problem. So the problem is not with the game files.

After that I changed the port from 27960 to 27961. And the problem is solved.

So my question is now, can the game port be corrupt or something?

Hi Beserver,

please take a look at this: http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22936

And please test it with port 27960.
ps. Schnoog has done a nice test/report: http://www.wolffiles.de/index.php?news-26

edit: Oops your using a windows server  It is made for Linux only :frowning:

Any idea how to fix this for Windows ?

(system) #7

No sorry, we only made a Linux fix.
Maybe there is somewhere around that can do the same for Windows servers.

(beservers) #8

Can you tell me how it hacks the et server.
Because when replacing the gamefiles, the issue stays. But it only starts sending when starting the et server.

Thanks for the feedback.

(system) #9

Sure it only starts when you start the server. If there is nothing behind the port, there would be nothing to do with the attacking stuff.

Schnoog explained it a bit here: http://www.wolffiles.de/index.php?news-26

Thanks for th feedback.
I think alot of GSP’s have this issue with their servers, but haven’t discoverd it yet.

(system) #11

Yeah thats for sure Beservers.

Too bad most bigger sites don’t post this fix.
For example, Splatterladder works with rtcwmap.de for the news. Problem is, rtcwmap is too dumb to post it as news - they think it is more important to post some silly blue/red skins or a wolf petition.

Anyway, if more people would use the fix, the lesser effective would be the attacks by those retarded scriptkiddies.

Just getting info from other game hosters that are experiencing the same problem with SOF2 servers. All by the getstatus requests . Maybe this is only the start of more problems to come.

The dude that wrote the exploit-fix just explained to me:

It doesnt hack your server. It exploits a weakness in the network protocol. Changing game files wont help as the problem is in the engine. The weakness is very probably present in all Q3 based games.
