Serious bug, please help me!

(ctlaltl33t) #1

Ok, this is a small video (872kb) taken from Fraps showing what’s wrong:

http://www.bitc0re.org/ctlaltl33t/images/ET.mov

Basically, every minute or so the game will just freeze up. It looks like LAG, but I assure you it is not. This happens on EVERY server I join, no matter what.

Also, every other time I have to download custom content (pk3 files), the game will crash. I tried to find the crash log file, but no dice.

I just reinstalled this game after not playing it for several months. It was installed on my brand new computer, specs (for troubleshooting):

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (stock speeds and cooling)
Memory: 1 gb OCZ pc-3500 DDR (stock speeds and cooling)
Storage: Western Digital Raptor SATA drive 74gb
Video: Visiontek ATi X800 Pro running latest Catalyst drivers (4.7 I believe, (stock speeds and cooling))
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Sound Card 1: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum with up to date drivers
Sound Card 2: Mark of the Unicorn PCI-324
CDROM: NEC 2500A CDRW/DVDR
Case: Antec SLK3700-BQE with 350 watt power supply

That’s just about everything that composes this system. All drivers are kept up to date. This computer is less than a month old. Please help me!!! UT2k4 runs like a dream, so it is something specifically with ET…

Edit: forgot to include that I’m running Windows XP SP1

Edit 2: I also forgot to mention, PUNKBUSTER HAS BEEN UPDATED MANUALLY. I did that earlier today…

Nice system specs. I wish I could help you out with your problem :frowning:

With a setup like that I have no idea what is wrong with it. Maybe reinstall ET? What connection you have?

(ctlaltl33t) #4

It isn’t the connection, because I play UT2k4 lag free for hours on end. Its a DSL line, 1.5 mbps down / 128 kbps up. Reinstalling ET is an option, I supposed I’ll give it a try tomorrow.

(SCDS_reyalP) #5

That is a known bug with no workaround.

(Maximus191) #6

Load et and at the title screen (NOT on a server) drop the console with the “¬” key and type /pb_system 1 and see if that helps.
When you get the laggy pauses have a look and see if your hard drive light is on.
Also turn off Norton anti virus if you have got it while you play.
Hope this helps.

just out of interest, why do you have 2 soundcards?
Could this be causing issues? Just a thought, i can’t think of anything else hardware related that could be wrong.

(nUllSkillZ) #8

I’ve heard from some players I’m talking to that they have lag’s too.
But only if they join ET-Pro server.
May be you could check this.

(Gimpsta) #9

Hmmm … maybe your power supply is a bit on the low side (see article)

(ctlaltl33t) #10

Well, my onboard sound was enabled and I got that changed in the bios. I was hoping that was the source of the problems but it wasn’t. I reinstalled the game but the same problems persist. I give up. Its a shame too, because I like this game.

I don’t see how power is an issue when I’m not using all of the power connectors yet and the resource intense beast that is UT2k4 runs perfectly on this system.

I have two sound cards because I do audio production on this PC (the MOTU card is designed for direct to HD audio recording). If that card and this game can’t coexist, guess which one gets to stay.

Oh well, thanks for all of the help. Too bad I couldn’t get this sorted.

The only thing I can think of is maybe your router (if you have one) is toast. I had the same problem with ET and as it seemed only ET and it turned out my router was fux0r3d. That’s really the only thing I can think of =/ Sweet system you got though!

Use linux :poke:

I have the exact same problem and I only play on ETPro 3.0.X servers with PB so I couldn’t tell you if it’s either of those. My system specs are completely different from yours (much older, intel cpu, NVIDA gpu, etc.) and I have no reason to believe my router is bad as two other computers run off of it with no reported problems. There is never any warning before it happens, suddenly the screen freezes and a split second later the sound starts looping then after 2-4 seconds everything returns to normal exept the lagometer now shows a large red plateau for the period of time it was frozen. One time recently this happened immediately after I primed a grenade so I’m thinking oh great I’m going to recover only to find that I’ve gibbed myself. Instead…I was just standing there as before and I hadn’t thrown the grenade (as I hadn’t lost any from my total) and it was no longer primed. :???:

I also have the same problem ctlaltl33t has, not just in ET but also in RTCW.

My system is a little less high spec but pretty much similar;

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Memory: 1 gb GeIL pc-3200 DDR
Storage: Western Digital SATA drive 160gb
Video: Sapphire Ati Radeon 9800 pro with Catalyst 4.7
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Sound: Onboard realtek 8.1
dvd-rom: no-name
Case: Coolermaster CMStacker
Power supply: Zalman 400 watt

I don’t have any problems running ut2k4 online either, no lag whatsoever. But in ET and RTCW I get the stalling problem. Ventrillo keeps working perfect so it’s no connection problem either.

Since we both have the MSI K8N Neo Platinum and I suppose we both use the onboard nic I’m considering changing that for a normal pci card nic. Maybe that’s where the problem is.

I’ve updated PB, set pb_system 1, closed norton anti virus and all other apps. If someone has a solution it would be much appreciated

Ok, this was a post copied from VD clan website (www.clan-vd.co.uk) which was posted by VD Frag_Master (Mike) - The indexing service option helped me the most, and now I dont even noticed the ‘chugging’. Believe some of the issues have been removed in the latest ET Pro 3.1.0 as well. (would need to check bani’s forum pages to find out for sure thou)

Question: My computer locks up or “chugs” sometimes while I’m playing with PunkBuster Enabled, what can cause this?

Answer: PunkBuster “pushes” hardware and the Windows Operating System more than most software and uses functions in the Windows API (low level functions) that aren’t used by most other programs. As such, there are a few cases where using PB can actually expose flaky hardware or other situations that don’t cause problems for other software. Here are a few things that have helped other users make these problems get better or go away completely:

If you are running Windows NT4/2000/XP, try lowering the priority of the game process. You can do this either by opening the Task-Manager while the game is running, or launch the game by using the command “start /belownormal c:\games\et\et.exe” from a command prompt or in the target field of your desktop shortcut used to launch the game. Lowering the game process priority does not reduce game performance (or just very little depending on the number of programs you are running next to the game).

Make sure you are using the latest version of PunkBuster (the latest version is always on our Download page) - also this link may help manually update your PB to the latest version when necessary.

From the game’s main screen, press the tilde key (the ~ key) to bring down the console and enter the following line (without the quotes): “/pb_system 1”.

Never close other programs from your Windows Task Manager before playing the game, either leave them running or close them through the proper interface - killing a process doesn’t always work completely even if it stops showing in the Task Manager and renegade threads seem to conflict with PB more than other programs that may be running in memory. There is a free utility that some players use called EndItAll to close all extra programs before they play to avoid software conflicts, crashes and lockups. You can get it from here.

Check the add/remove programs list in your Control Panel and uninstall any programs that you don’t use or that you don’t know what they are.

One program that seems to conflict with PB more than others is Norton Anti-Virus. If you have it installed, try uninstalling it to see if the lockups go away. Some players have reported that when this is the culprit, they can reinstall Norton Anti-Virus and the lockups don’t come back.

Other background programs that seem to conflict with PB for some users are Sound Blaster Live software and helper programs that come with video cards (especially ATI keyboard shortcut programs).

Some players discovered that they had a computer virus and that the lockups vanished after it was fully removed.

Experiment with the pb_sleep setting … try setting it to 20, 250, or 500 to see if that affects your game performance. A few players have reported that all the problems go away when they “tweak” this setting.

In extreme cases, a few users have reported that replacing their RAM (memory) or video/sound cards fixed the problem.

Also, you’ll want to turn the ‘Indexing Service’ off as this is know to have issues with PB. To turn it off go to the following:

Control Panel -->Administrative Tools–>Services–>Indexing Services–>Right Click–>Properties–>Stop–>Disable

Try the above and see if they fix any of your lag problems.
