SD's Recommendations For Play Time.

(PH@TIE) #1

Hi Splash.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on game time before taking a screen break.

I realise that I will get some llama spam replies, from some of ya visitors saying “Screen breaks are for Girls” and the like. So I thank them now.

Clanbase have recently opened their ET Stopwatch ladder.

The matches run over 1 Map, 3 games per map. Thats:-

GAME1 = ABBA.
GAME 2 = ABBA.
Game 3 = ABBA.

If say Fuel Dump is selected as the map, and each game goes to the wire, i.e 30 mins. The entire match will last 3 Hours!!!

I work in the IT industry where some peeps are quite hot on the health and safety side.

Ativision and Id Software reccommend a break every 1 hour. (Not that I do this.)

I am 36 yrs old and my eyes are old and knackered anyway, but there are people as young as 12 playing ET. (Reguardless of age restrictions). They will be blind before they have their first pint.

Im not trying to be Victor Mature, but would like to hear what you would recommend, as it is your Most Excellent… creation.

Cheers

Phats.

i have always thought they should do only half of the normal time in matches. or even less. nobody is going to play a match for 1.5 hours and that is if one gets owned. so it will not be that rare

Yup I think a match lasting 2–3 hours is too much… OK when just playing for fun.

Unfortunately Maps such as Fuel Dump require a long time to play out, in order for an evenly balanced game.

You just couldn’t play Fuel Dump in 10 mins.

ANy SD members care to comment?

I would agree 2-3 hours is a long session to be playing in one go, that said the guys here have been known to play much longer, naming no names (sock, frankie, nakedape & djbob) :).

I think so long as you have a break period between Game1, Game2 and Game3 then it should be safe on your eyes. Id and Activision (notice they have ‘vision’ in their name) have it right, every hour is when you should be taking breaks.

Phats, though you say you have bad eyes, you don’t really want them getting any worse right?

Man, ET is so good my wife tells me I’ve been saying “I’m a Covert Ops” in my sleep …

It’s just an excuse for poor game play m8. Thanx for the response.

The problem is that some maps last a way longer than others. For example Oasis usually doesn’t take long for a good team to do the job (well I can’t really say usually because so few matches have been played), but a map like Goldrush will most likely take the full 30 mins, which is a real problem when both teams do full-def. This may change when people improve their tactics, but I doupt that this will happen. I think that this “full-def-problem” appears only in Fueldump and Goldrush.

If you don’t want to end up very short-sighted, the opticians recommend that every 15-20 minutes you focus on something reasonably far away for around 30 seconds. EG look out of your window (you know, outside, the place with people and fresh air  )

It’s to do with how your eyes get forked. If you continually focus at one distance for long periods of time, the lens in your eye very slolwly hardens, making it harder for the focal muscles to bend it. This is why old people tend to have bad eyesight because old age has the same effect. Basically, just exercise your eyes by looking at multiple focal lengths a lot.

I take a small few seconds break every 30 minutes, while the map is loading…

Yeah, I must admit, even though I know what I should do, I rarely do it. So I’ll probably need glasses when I get old, but nevermind.

They don’t let me have a window in my small padded room :eek2: what do you recommend Dr. Damocles?

when the map is loading try and stare into the distance out of a window… it relaxes your eye muscles
